General Motors’ second joint venture in China officially launched the all-new Wuling Starlight PHEV in the country’s domestic market as the newest member of its extensive new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolio. As such, the plug-in hybrid variant becomes the first Starlight variant to go on sale in the Chinese market, with the all-electric version of Wuling’s midsize sedan arriving early next year.
The all-new Wuling Starlight is the first sedan in Wuling’s history and further expands SGMW’s range of electric vehicles, which until now was mainly composed of zero-emission minicars such as the best-selling Wuling MINI EV and Bingo EV, as well as some hybrid models. Designed for families, the Starlight has a spacious interior for all occupants and class-leading trunk space of 540 liters or 19 cubic feet.
In particular, the all-new Wuling Starlight debuts a new NEV architecture developed by the automaker for larger electrified products with more flexible capabilities. Based on the successful Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform of the mini and subcompact car lines, the new architecture introduced by the Starlight is capable of underpinning compact and mid-sized vehicles with HEV, PHEV and fully electric powertrains.
Mechanically, the Wuling Starlight PHEV equips the Wuling Lingxi hybrid system composed of a 1.5L gasoline engine and an electric motor capable of developing up to 177 horsepower and providing more than 1,100 km or 683.5 miles of range. The Starlight PHEV range includes a Standard version with a 9.5 kWh battery pack offering 70 km (43.5 miles) of electric range, as well as a 20.5 kWh Advanced variant with an EV-only range of 150 km (93.2 miles).
The all-new Wuling Starlight PHEV is now available for sale throughout Wuling’s official dealer network in China, where it is sold under the brand name Wuling Xing Guang. Wuling’s plug-in hybrid midsize sedan boasts an extensive list of technology and safety equipment as standard, as well as four driving modes (Economy+, Economy, Standard and Sport), four hybrid power modes and three energy recovery modes.
