Chevy Colorado Among 2024 MotorTrend Truck Of The Year Award Contenders

Marking a significant departure from the second-generation Chevy Colorado in terms of exterior styling, interior features and drivetrain specifications, the third-generation Colorado has been generally well-received since its inception for the 2023 model year. Now, the Bow Tie brand’s midsize pickup truck has been named a contender for the 2024 MotorTrend Truck of the Year award.

Praising the Colorado’s simplicity and greater focus on off-road capabilities, MotorTrend made sure to mention that these attributes don’t take away from the effectiveness of the midsizer. In fact, the publication applauds the simplicity of the Colorado, claiming that it adds to its versatility.

Other points that MotorTrend made sure to praise include great power across the lineup, expertly hiding cost savings to give the owner more satisfaction with their purchase, and the availability of the ZR2 trim level.

In regard to the all-terrain Colorado ZR2 specifically, MotorTrend Deputy Editor Alexander Stoklosa mentioned how “It’s bizarre how well the ZR2 drives on pavement given what it can do off-road. Few hardcore off-roaders manage this balancing act.”

Of course, there were some things the publication had issues with, including noise levels of the engine, cheap plastics if the driver knew where to look, and the ever-present gripe of the headlight controls, which can be found in the infotainment screen.

As a reminder, the Chevy Colorado is available with one of two engine options, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, now called TurboMax, which produces 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

Under the skin, the third-gen Colorado rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, which it shares with the third-gen GMC Canyon. Meanwhile, production of the 2024 model year officially kicked off in December 2023 at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
