General Motors is gearing up for a complete overhaul for the Chevy Equinox, with the forthcoming 2025 model year debuting the crossover’s fourth generation. As expected, the new 2025 Chevy Equinox will usher in a long list of updates and changes over the preceding third-gen model. Now, GM Authority is rounding up all the intel we’ve gathered thus far to provide you with a rundown on what we know about and expect from the 2025 Chevy Equinox.
Model Line
The model line of the 2025 Chevy Equinox is expected to remain the same as that of the current model, with LS, LT, RS and Premier trim levels. However, a key change could involve the potential addition a new off-oriented trim level, called either Activ or Z71.Â
Exterior
The 2025 Chevy Equinox will be available as a five-door compact crossover SUV, just like the current model, with a similar size and footprint. However, the styling will be completely overhauled with a more expressive design, new wheels, and a more upright greenhouse. The front end will feature Chevy’s signature two-tier “highbrow” headlight treatment similar to the Chevy Traverse and Chevy Blazer, with thin upper lighting signatures. Dual exhaust outlets will be found in the rear, along with a set of horizontally-oriented tail lights.
Interior
The interior will be completely overhauled, offering better ergonomics and more usable space. A new digital gauge cluster will be found behind the similarly-new steering wheel. It’s possible that higher-end models deliver a larger digital cluster than lower-end trims.
Further changes will include a new infotainment system with a larger infotainment screen, along with the latest tech, including new active safety features and the GM Super Cruise system. We also expect a revamped selection of colors and materials for the interior colorway.
Powertrain
Under the hood, the 2025 Chevy Equinox will cradle a new small-displacement turbocharged engine. Featuring a transverse layout, the new gasoline powerplant will mate to the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as optional. The new rugged trim mentioned above will get all-wheel drive as standard.
Platform
The 2024 Chevy Equinox will ride on the GM D2-2 platform, which is essentially an updated version of the GM D2 platform that underpins the current third-generation Chevy Equinox.
Availability
The 2025 Chevy Equinox will be available in North America, China, South Korea, along with select export markets.
Production
The new ‘Nox is expected to be produced at a GM Mexico plant, with the current model assembled at the GM Ramos Arizpe facility. Early whispers from the supply chain tell us that production will likely kick off midway through the 2024 calendar year, with the first units arriving in the second half of 2024.

They need to put the new I4 2.5L turbo in this thing. It would sell much better IMO if they offered more power.
I agree, but they don’t need it to sell better, they just need it to be the cheap entry level compact crossover. Where I live, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a new Equinox or Terrain…they are everywhere. Mary will not want to make any new model that will take away from her EV lineup and profit…an ICE Equinox that is priced right and has over 200hp will definitely take some of the spotlight away.
One thing is certain, GM will not make the 2.5L turbo available for this compact crossover. Expect the 1.5L turbo making 175hp 203lb/ft to be the main power plant, they even might make the 1.3L turbo available as a base engine.
The upcoming 2.5L turbo should be the top-line engine, while the 2.0L turbo from the Caddy XT4 should. The pathetic 1.5L engine and six-speed transmission goes away.
We know that the GM “Make It Boring” Team will definitely go over this a few times to make sure it doesn’t take any sales away from Mary’s precious Equinox EV or Blazer EV. The Equinox lost its soul when they got rid of the 2.0L/9spd combo. If the 2.5L or 2.7L is going in the Traverse/Blazer ICE, I guarantee it will not be under the hood of the Equinox, even in sport trim or Activ trim. My guess is that it will still come with a base engine that will be targeted towards the rental/fleet customers…probably the 1.3L/9spd combo.
This will be DOA if it gets saddled with the 1.3L 3cyl. Might as well not even produce it at that point.
Don’t be too sure. Knowing current GM they may offer that 1.3L turbo as a base engine not only for fleet/rental operators, but for consumers wanting a larger crossover option at a reasonable price in the LS to 1LT trims.
They have never had “Soul”. This buying class doesn’t give a woot on big engine sizes and lots of power, that costs most. It needs to be competitive and if a larger engine is needed as an option should be a hybrid for the mpg. This sells very well with the 1.5. It could use a little power bump but nothing like a 2.5T or anything, that will cost money and not make it.
I’d like to see a plug-in hybrid varient of the Equinox based on the Voltec powertrain.
That’s exactly what they should seriously consider. But they won’t because they want you to buy the Equinox EV instead, when many people are not willing to make that move yet.
But it must allow electric only function and the minimum range is 40 miles.
Crossovers sell on price and ratio of style/perceived value only. Nobody who buy’s these things cares about powertrain features, nobody… The current Equinox is relatively cheap, but has a terrible perceived value because it also looks extremely cheap inside and out. Scale up the new Trax, and the Trax’s value proposition, and you have a winner for the mindless sheep who buy these things.
The Equinox is a darling of the fleet industry. It is decently priced, decently equipped, and offers the type of utility that most people renting cars like. GM knows this and isn’t going to risk missing out on fleet sales by over-engineering or over-pricing it. The 2025 Equinox is simply going to be another “built to a price point” GM effort to keep it attractive to fleets, and affordable for retail customers that just want something that gets them around with no drama.
I have a 2nd gen Equinox with the 301hp 3.6L V6. It is over 8 years old and has been a great vehicle (purchased new). The V6 makes it way more entertaining to drive than anyone would expect. HIghway gas mileage is 28mpg, which is perfectly fine. The AWD works great for winter driving.
The current Equinox is a step backwards, Less comfortable seating, less power, and it has garnered the unfortunate stigma of being a fleet vehicle or a “last resort” vehicle for retail consumers. People will often start out looking to buy something else and then end up “settling” for an Equinox because of price, availability, or simply needing something and not wanting to put much time and effort in to shopping alternatives.
A friend of mine had a loaner current gen Equinox while his Grand Caravan was in the shop. He said it was “meh” and he was anxious to get his minivan back because the minivan was a better driving vehicle. Pretty sad that a 7 year old Grand Caravan was better driving than a current Equinox. His biggest complaints with the Equinox were lack of power, and poor handling.
The ones with 2.0t were great. I have a terrain with it it drives better than any caravan. Also the terrai. Is not a fleet queen Gm no longer push them into fleets like they use two.
I wouldn’t grab the next gen with the 1.5, let alone even smaller. I expected they’d bring back the 2.0 for the first few years, at least.
But also, it looks like they may be taking the reptilian front end. No thanks, if I wanted to drive a brick, I’d be leasing the Terrain.
