The Chevy Avalanche Could Potentially Last 250,000 Miles, Study Finds

The Chevy Avalanche is one of 23 vehicle models with at least a 20 percent chance of remaining operational to 250,000 miles or beyond, according to the results of a recent study.

Automotive website iSeeCars.com published the results of its annual study on the vehicles with the greatest longevity in late April 2023, with the Chevy Avalanche as one of five GM models to make the cut.

The Chevy Avalanche has a 26.7 percent likelihood of reaching or exceeding 250,000 miles of useful life according to the study’s findings. This is 2.3 times the average, the study indicates, with the typical vehicle having an 11.8 percent chance of reaching the quarter-million mile mark. The Avalanche was produced through 2013, when it was discontinued.

The Chevy Avalanche combines features and design details from both SUVs and pickup trucks, based on its Chevy Suburban heritage. It is also equipped with a midgate between the cab and the cargo bed, enabling it to “change from a SUV to a super SUV” by folding down the divider and the seats, extending the cargo area forward into the cabin. It’s worth noting that the Midgate is making a comeback in the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV.

iSeeCars notes that vehicle longevity has been increasing. The executive analyst for the site, Karl Brauer, remarked that “for most of the automobile’s history, 100,000 miles was considered the maximum usable lifespan,” but that this has changed over the past three decades. Vehicles first started achieving 200,000 miles of useful life, and recently have started surviving to 250,000 miles.

The longest-lived GM vehicle in the survey, the GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup truck, has a 41.3 percent chance of topping a quarter-million miles. The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is right behind it at 41.2 percent, with the Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Avalanche, and GMC Yukon XL trailing but still significantly above average.

Toyota dominated the rankings with eight vehicles on the list. However, it was a Ford pickup, the F-350 Super Duty, that took first place with a 49.1 percent chance of its odometer reaching 250,000.

The study also notes that 10 of the top 23 vehicles for longevity are pickup trucks, and eight more are SUVs, with just three sedans and one minivan on the list. The Chevy Avalanche was counted as a pickup for purposes of the study, though it technically combines the two body styles.

    2. I call bull$hit on your text mine has 2000,000 miles and no rust and I live in south texas ear Galveston island and it looks beautiful and runs great no rust it’s a 2011 avalanche

  2. My 2004 Colorado is over that now. Many chevy pick ups around here with over 200k. My 5.3 2015 4wd Silverado has 100k right now and it’s the least amount of miles I’ve ever put on a vehicle in this time frame.

    3. I have one, a 2003 that I take on the beach for 13 years and no rust, run it on Asseteage Island and no rust anywhere/.

    4. In the rust belt, there’s not much one can do. In the south, they do not rust out.

  4. We have a 2002 (original owners) that is at 194,000 on the clock and counting. It is correct though that the rear wheel wells rust out. Both sides have been repaired once and the passenger side is in need of it again. Will get it done this summer as this truck is a keeper. Best vehicle I/we have ever owned.

  5. My 2012 Silverado has 76k miles and no rust, but I oil the bedsides so the wheel well openings won’t rust. I will probably replace it in a year or two with a new Silverado and save this one for my grandson. It has been the best truck I’ve owned out of 7 total (2-Chevys and 5-Fords). This truck has been too good to me I would never trade it or sell it.

  7. The early ones were bad but once they put the Iron Duke 4-cylinder in them they lasted a long time but the damage was done. My dad had a 77, last model year and it was a great car.

  8. Love my Avalanche! I’m gonna drive it until the last wheel falls off. It still looks new when I shine it up (2009). At 190,000-mostly highway mi.) and just changed the oil pump. Still drives like a car.

  10. WTF ???? I have a 2003 Chevy Tahoe with over 500,000 miles on it ……

    A great car and very few issues. IF you take good care of them the LS engine family is wonderful !!!

  12. I put 318,000 on the original motor and trans on my 2007 avalanche Lt. was smoking at 183,000 but flushed the motor and started running Lucas at every oil change. Just put a forged 6.0 in it. I don’t plan on buying another truck

  14. My 05 avalanche has over 300000 miles on it. No rust. No issues. Just oil changes and tune ups. I live in Dallas Texas.

  15. I have a 2004 Avalanche with 353,000. Yes the body needs love, as do most vehicles in Ohio, but it starts every time and has been one of the best trucks I’ve ever had.

  16. Worst truck I’ve ever owned. Rockers and fenders rusted through, electrical issues, transmission rebuilt twice, transfer case replaced, valve lift spring broke, oil pressure issues and I could continue… All of the above with regular maintenance.

  18. 2003 Avalanche, I live in Ohio, truck is driven usually in winter and once every couple months in warm months. Unbelievable amount of issues. I look under my wife’s 2004 Toyota RAV driven way more than the Avalanche and you would not believe the vehicles are one year apart. The Toyota looks pristine while the Avalanche had 4 rotors replaced, rear dust guards, all brake lines, all fuel lines, gear selector cable – all due to rust. I HATE getting under the vehicle because even with safety glasses I get rust in my eyes and every where else. All 4 fenders have rusted through along with the front of the hood. I love the design it’s the quality put into the materials that is just dreadful. Never again will I buy a truck by GM – they got out of paying for their crappy brake lines by calling them a “maintenance item”. Never in my life have I had to replace brake lines until recently on GM products (several) but not on other vehicles of any brand name. Also replaced all the dash gauge motors, and the heater/AC damper motors. Never had a vehicle fail in so many areas. Strong motor, transmission has minor issues not yet resolved. Only 135000 miles on it. Been through 5 batteries in about 8 years (not driven much). 250,000 will not be the end result of this vehicle unless I replace everything South of the radiator cap.

  19. I have a 2002, my second Avalanche. Im at 379000km, the 5.3L purrs, regular maintenance and replacement parts. Here in Alberta, its the only truck ill drive through our winters. Countless drives to Vancouver..(over 100 trips) over Highway Through Hell trips, the Coquihalla Highway #5, cost me a transmission, ….minor, and easily swapped out, a transfer case and a rear end. Bought it used in 2012 with 129,000km, paid $6200.00cdn. Yes, theres rust, and sadly, it is now so bad that this will be my last year with this old horse. What an incredible ride its been.

  20. Mine was a 2005 and had 298,000 when I traded it last year. There were repairs l but something within the engine was giving out and after 18 years it was time to treat myself to a new vehicle.
