Making its global debut at the Chengdu Motor Show in China last September, the Buick Envista is now poised to arrive in North America for the 2024 model year. Interestingly, the Buick Envista is GM’s first crossover coupe model.
With a sleek design and streamlined appearance, the Buick Envista definitely looks good. Part of that is down to the crossover coupe silhouette.
The crossover coupe body style was arguably first introduced with debut of the Infiniti FX, which later morphed into the Infiniti QX70. At the time, Infiniti likely did not know just how popular the crossover coupe body style would become, and as a result, did not market it as such.
Later, the BMW X6 was arguably the first example of an automaker “intentionally” offering the crossover coupe body style. Based on the X5, BMW framed the X6 as a “sports activity coupe,” and several other examples of the body style from other automakers would follow. Just a few these would include the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and GLC Coupe, the Acura ZDX, the Audi Q5 Sportback, and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
The essential idea of a crossover coupe is to offer a more exclusive and / or sportier alternative to a standard crossover body style, incorporating a sloping roofline around the B-pillar and a higher price tag as well. Throughout it all, however, GM has been slow to join the crossover coupe bandwagon.
That changes with the launch of the Buick Envista. Viewed from the side, the new Envista definitely has the right silhouette, offering a sportier look compared to a traditional crossover. What’s more, one could make the argument that GM is the first company to “democratize” the crossover coupe body style, offering the Buick Envista with an attractive, premium new look, but at a much more affordable price point.
As a reminder, GM Authority was the first to report that the Buick Envista would be available in the U.S., with GM President Mark Reuss later confirming the crossover’s imminent arrival. Additionally, GM Authority was the first to report that the 2024 Buick Envista would be positioned below the 2024 Buick Encore GX with regard to the brand’s model lineup. Under the body panels, the Buick Envista rides on the GM VSS-F platform. Production for the North American market will take place at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea.

Absolutely stunning! I’m opposed to suvs and crossovers in general, but this vehicle has changed my mind.
Not a coupe. A coupe doesn’t have four doors.
If people can identify as anything they want to be so can a car.
OK then, let’s call it a truck.
Sure, people can pretend to be anything they want to, but they still are what they are. Goes for cars too.
Another foreign made vehicle by General Motors. I went to buy a new GM truck last week and 90% of the trucks were made in Mexico on the lot. I live in metro Detroit! Can’t believe GM can reduce production in the USA and then turnaround and have foreign countries keep production high! All I can say is look at the vehicle sticker and buy yours MADE IN THE USA! Support American Workers!!!
Made in the USA. Honda, Toyota, BMW.
I suppose if you ignore the Pontiac Aztec…
Another “Made in China” GM product! WTF…come on GM, don’t you know that China isn’t our friend anymore, and why is it that you can’t or won’t build these top of the line Buicks in America! For god’s sake, it’s bad enough that the whole drivetrain is made overseas and you have to go ahead and assemble it overseas too, and in China no less! I’ve even read where half of GM is owned (if not all) is now in control of Shanghai Motors, or some such garbage! Say it isn’t so GM, cause if that’s true, then The General Motors that I grew up with in America is now forever gone! If that were not bad enough, word around is that GM wants to go “full on Electric Vehicle” in production eventually…are you serious? Even Mighty Toyota says that a bad idea, at least they’ll also produce “Hybrid” vehicles that can run on both Petrol and Electric.
I dunno, I see nothing but bad times ahead for GM if they continue to think this way, using Chinese made products and expecting America to be alright with this way of operating. Oh well, I guess being a “Global Business” GM has to keep it’s options open, but there are other countries besides Communist China that GM can use to assemble their products in, but truthfully, I do believe that GM has finally been “bought” by the Chinese and the end result could eventually mean General Motors demise here in America. I hope and pray that I’m wrong because there are a lot of Americans that need jobs and there are also many foreign brands that build their products in America, maybe GM should take the hint and bring some of these expensive Buicks being built in China back the good old USA. Just my opinion, of course there might be those who see this action on GM’s part to be a positive thing, if so please tell me how this benefits all of us here in America!
Its being made in South Korea for the US market.
Production for the North American market will take place at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea.
Looks like the dreaded hatchback.
Coupes only have 2 doors. Sedans have 4 doors. Just sayin’
Article forgot Honda Crosstour which was value priced. This is a hatch backed sedan on big wheels which is probably the future of most sedans. Unfortunately, Pure design sucks
Replacement tires for those big wheels are very expensive. Go back to 15″ wheels and tires because it won’t be used “off road” and need extra ground clearance. A lower car is more wind efficient for highway gas mileage and a step stool or running boards wont be needed for older folks to get in. After-all it is mostly older folks that can afford to buy Buicks. BTW, i’m a GM retiree and won’t buy if it ain’t built in the U.S.A.
This is another example of Mary’s poor decision making. GM took an existing platform and changed the back of it. These SUV “coups” have all sold very poorly – every make that has come to market. Not to mention that it splits sales in an already overcrowded gm space (Trax, Trailblazer, Encore, Encore GX and now this turd).
Instead she could have invested the money into a Colorado based K5 Blazer which would likely sell at more than three times the volume and up to six times the revenue of this Envista.
Not to mention that gm has zero vehicles in the space the Colorado K5 Blazer would occupy.
Tahoe is based on the Silverado, a big jump up in size from the Colorado. GM makes nothing to compete with real off-roaders like the Wrangler (sales 200,000 ly), Bronco (sales still ramping up 120,000 ly) 4 Runner (120,000 ly).
GM’s current four entries in this Envista market segment combined sell about what ONE of the above sell per year and now they are adding another one to the mix, which will only dilute the sales more.
And ummm Jeep, Ford and Toyota also make a large Tahoe sized SUVs too.
maybe if we suggested they have smaller tires as standard, and charge extra for the larger tires?
Made in China. I will never buy foreign made products. It’s sickening that GM was saved for bankruptcy and extinction by America then GM turns its back and offshores more products.
FU Mary Barra.
Yes, it is made in China.
SAIC – GM CHINA.
Just because you say something or want it to be true does not make it a fact. Karen
“Crossover Coupe,” what double-speak. It is a four door sedan…. GM and others are realizing what some (Toyota, Honda, Hyndai, BMW, Mercedes, Rolls have understood all along….. produce a good four door sedan and you will sell them.
Premium new look! Not with those ugly black wheels and all the cheap looking black plastic slathered all over the place. Everything today is so backwards!
