Earlier this year, General Motors announced the all-new Buick Envista – a small crossover for the Chinese market. At the time, no announcement was made about bringing the small “crossover coupe” to North America. Now, GM Authority has learned from sources familiar with the matter that GM is currently considering bringing the Buick Envista, to the North American market as a replacement for the outgoing 2022 Buick Encore.
The all-new 2023 Buick Envista crossover coupe is currently available at Buick dealers in China. The lineup is comprised of three trim levels: Enjoy, Smart and GS/GS+. All models feature class-leading technology and safety features as standard. Meanwhile, the powertrain is a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine rated at 181 horsepower mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
Here are the starting prices of the four Buick Envista trims in China:
- 2023 Envista Enjoy: 152,900 yuan (about $21,450 USD at current exchange rates)
- 2023 Envista Smart: 159,900 yuan ($22,450 USD)
- 2023 Envista GS: 169,900 yuan ($23,850 USD)
- 2023 Envista GS+: 178,900 yuan ($25,100 USD)
The Buick Envista rides on a new variant of the VSS-F platform (vehicle set), which it shares with its corporate cousin, the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax. For its part, the Trax itself was recently unveiled for North America, and is sold in China as the Chevy Seeker. In fact, GM Authority exclusively reported that the Seeker would make its way to North America.
Earlier this year, Buick shared that its North American product portfolio would be comprised of four ICE-powered crossovers. With the impending discontinuation of the Buick Encore after the 2022 model year, GM Authority reported that the fourth model will end up being the three-row version of the Buick Envision, known as the Buick Envision GX and currently sold in China as the Envision Plus. However, we’ve since learned that GM is in the midst of reconsidering those plans, with the fourth model likely being the Envista that would indirectly replace the Encore.
“Buick is a global brand with distinct portfolios in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and China,” Buick spokesperson Mikhael Farah tells GM Authority. “In China, we recently debuted the all-new Buick Envista, a compact SUV tailored for China’s young generation and modern families. As with any vehicle, we are always listening to customer feedback and evaluating products for our global markets, but have nothing to announce at this time.”
Separately, Buick also plans to introduce a new electric vehicle for the North American market. However, that is currently slated to take place in 2024, after the introduction of the fourth ICE-powered crossover in North America.

They need to give Buick something, as (essentially) three vehicles is not enough, despite how Buick’s website tries to act like they have six models. The Encore is discontinued and beyond three models, they are just trim levels.
Whether it’s the Buick Envision Plus (“Envision GX”) or the Envista, it evidently will be the last new ICE Buick in the U.S.
I hope they didn’t decide against the Envision GX because it would require giving it Buick’s new design features and they didn’t want to spend the money.
I also hope that if they decide on the Envista, they make it clear how it differs from the Chevrolet Trax (aka “Seeker”).
They might as well bring it here. Why not at this point? Keep the name Envista and use it to replace the aged Encore. Then drop the GX off the newer Encore so they have 4 models for now: Envista, Encore, Envision and Enclave. Then give them a Buick sedan based off the Malibu and call it Regal. This could all happen very quickly, thus throwing Buick a safety rope till the EV models start to land.
The Envista is clearly the “orange car” that was discussed around 2019. They said it would introduce a new design language for Buick and that was true. So it may be a given that it comes to the U.S.
I think the new “face” of Buick looks fine, though I’m not crazy about the name “Envista,” nor do I like the back hatchback design.
If they are ‘considering’ bringing the Envista to NA then it might as well be a go. It might come under another name. We will see.
Umm… Please tell me more about the “20 Official Color Wrap Film”
Buick in China sells vehicles with color vinyl wrap from factory or how does this work?
Kyle: It’s most likely the same as any wrap you can buy/install in the US, but in this case GM China has decided to grab that slice of the (aftermarket) pie and wrap (pun intended) the profits into their account. I’d think they are using some company that GM China has approved to do the installation.
In the mean time, we here in the US get 3 shades of gray, a silver, a white, a black, a red and an ugly blue. At least that’s the way if feels every time I look at paint colors offered today! Unlike in the 70’s and 80’s where many times you had 10+ single colors and 4 to 8 two-tone colors. And don’t even get me going on the bland interiors we have today.
You’re not wrong with the colors here sadly..
I saw 26 colors and got a little jealous of their selection!
I deal with all the aftermarket stuff at my dealership so this interests me that they integrate it into the sales and build process directly with the factory. Kind of a cool idea honestly!
Yes. Especially if they will cover it under factory warranty (but I don’t know that is the case). Maybe that will make it here to the US as well?
Why does everyone always down vote me I’m not a troll.
Maybe you’re just wrong all the time.
Not a fan of this car and these tall cars are not tearing up the market but it is at least something different and since it is in production cost would be minimal.
It is coming, Avenir trim and all.
Why are tall, narrow looking 4 doors with sloping rear roof lines/ hatches called “Coupes”?
Seeker/Trax/Envista. Doesn’t anyone see the Chinese invasion is with cars. They don’t have to fire a missile.
Three Buick models does not equal an invasion. If this were the case we’d all be speaking Japanese and German.
Buick is a niche brand so only one assembly line is needed. More are sold in China plus they use import tariffs on cars as the US does on trucks.
GM is overly dependent on China. Should China move on Taiwan then GM will loose it’s largest market and only be a regional company looking for a partner.
Ford, my least favorite brand, sells Evos and Zephyr in China & I expect those to come here in time, too. Still not a trojan horse invasion.
Trey needs to break out automotive history and study awhile. A coupe is not a 4dr sedan it is a 2dr. I swear where do you get your writers? Oh I forgot they’re of the modern generation.
They are assembled in Korea. So no.
But given this is the Trax in Buick clothing it was obvious it was coming stateside from the same factory.
Bob: Although in the US we tend to refer to a 2 dr as a “coupe” and a 4 dr as a sedan, that isn’t the determining factor. Years ago it was explained to me in a very good way, but I’ve forgotten the details. But if I recall, it has to do with the rear seat room or something like that. I’m not that interested in looking it up, but I’m sure a quick Google search would tell you.
Well we (or at least I) are in this country, I could care less what the rest of the world calls it, a coupe is a 2 Dr, a sedan is 4dr.
Understand Bob, but you can decide to call a duck a cat, but it doesn’t mean the duck is a cat. A quick Google search:
“Most people would define a coupe as being a two-door vehicle while a sedan is a four-door. That’s actually not the case, since coupes can have four doors and sedans can have two doors.”
And:
“What Is a Coupe and Its Features? A coupe is defined as a closed roof, 2-door passenger car with a three-box body for the engine and the passenger compartment. Most importantly, a coupe is a vehicle with interior space that is under 33 cubic feet.”
As you can see, even though a coupe is normally considered a 2 door, it can also be a 4 door and is based on rear seat room. But don’t get cranky with me, I was only responding to your first comment.
Whoever wrote that for Google is flat a$$ wrong. Don’t agree? Then show me a picture of a four door coupe that was manufactured in numbers.
A coupe has two doors, and no more.
Anither boring SUV with lack of any character for Biuck. What for? A shame that a brand that produced authentic automotive jewels like the GNX, the Regal, the Riviera or the Century is now composed of an unattractive line of boring cookie cutter SUV’s and crossovers.
Not everybody likes SUV’s or crossovers or is willing to buy one no matter what.
BRING BUICK BACK TO NA WITH A SEDAN
How about Buick sells a Buick? A big, American styled, comfortable SEDAN. Premium features on upper trims, and lower-trims that still offer a stylish look, but at an excellent value and low-price point. This was the formula that sold 100,000’s Buick’s each year for an entire CENTURY. Yes, they need any new product they can get, but what about this crossover conveys Buick? I’d buy a brand new 2005 LeSabre over this any day of the week if I could. They said it in their own commercials; “That’s not a Buick!”… Buick is dead to me without a sedan. (FYI Ms. Barra: I’m a 34 year-old professional with a moderately high income living in Chicago. You don’t have to be over 65 to desire a comfortable sedan. I will never buy a appliance-shaped crossover…)
I agree…. “The Great American Road USED to belong to Buick !” The old slogan and good product sold a ton of product in the 80’s and 90’s.
It seems to me that Buick could and should have three potential vehicles under consideration right now for its North America line-up. 1. the Envista, the newest model, with Buick’s new styling, and seeing the positive reaction to the similar Chevrolet Seeker / Trax; 2. the Envision GX, already being produced in China but would need refreshed with Buick’s new styling; and 3. (this would be a wildcard) the Buick Enspire, having already spent effort on the basic design, shown it as a concept, and I believe having trademarked the name for use. However, I would consider any of these merely a “place holder” until Buick gets fully “Electra”-fied by 2030.
The second I agree on.
Though they should do the same for the Envision and Enclave.
