General Motors has filed to trademark the Chevrolet brand name for use in NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens).
GM’s February 16th, 2023 filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is assigned serial number 97798317 and specifies that the mark will be used for downloadable media, specifically collective artwork, text, audio, and video through the use of NFTs.
For those who may be unaware, an NFT is essentially a digital photo (or piece of digital media) that is registered through a blockchain to protect its authenticity. This means that while the NFTs can have screenshots taken of them – or be replicated in any similar method, for that matter – the blockchain registration indicates who has the ownership rights to the original digital media.
This isn’t GM’s first foray into the NFT marketspace. Back in May 2022, GM Authority reported that The General unveiled an NFT art project in South Korea that turned the Chevy Tahoe into a digital work of art. This project came as an effort to boost not only sales, but also the overall image of the Tahoe in the South Korean market, as the full-size SUV had just been introduced to that market the month prior.
The Chevy Tahoe NFT Art Project consisted of ten exclusive pieces that capture the heritage of the Tahoe and was created to express the vehicle’s unique experience. The art pieces were presented and offered to the public in a raffle on the official Chevrolet website in the Asian country.
GM Korea’s NFT project is a collaborative effort of two South Korean graphic artists, who each produced five Tahoe pieces. Illustrator Choe Hwan-uk developed “Legacy”, “Discover”, “Meteor”, “Vision”, and “Masterpiece”; along with visual artist Lee Cheon-Seong, author of “Castle”, “Mastery”, “Space”, “Giant”, and “Gemstone”.
The “Vision” and “Castle” NFT were available in five pieces each, while 50 units of the remaining eight creations were made available. The Chevy Tahoe NFT Art Project’s 410 units were available through a special online event at www.chevrolet.co.kr using the Klip eWallet from Kakao Talk, a popular downloaded messaging app in South Korea.
