2023 Corvette Z06 To Get Hit With Gas Guzzler Tax

The 2023 Corvette Z06 offers impressive mid-engine performance, with figures and specs that surpass several high-priced sports cars, as GM Authority covered previously. However, while the 2023 Corvette Z06 offers a ton of speed for a relatively low entry fee, GM Authority has learned that GM also expects the new Z06 to tack on a substantial gas guzzler tax.

According to GM Authority sources, General Motors expects the 2023 Corvette Z06 to include a $2,600 gas guzzler tax. At the moment, official EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2023 Corvette Z06 have yet to be released, but the $2,600 tax would land the go-faster Vette between 17.5 and 18.5 combined mpg. These are adjusted figures for the five-cycle test procedures the EPA introduced in 2008, the the unadjusted, two-cycle procedures are still used to determine the gas guzzler tax.

Unsurprisingly, the available carbon fiber aero packages up that gas guzzler tax even further. For those who may not be aware, the 2023 Corvette Z06 is available with a range of carbon fiber aero upgrades, including a front splitter, front dive planes, and an enormous rear wing, the combination of which produces upwards of 734 pounds of downforce at 186 mph.

While great for cornering speeds and braking, downforce also creates drag, which means lower overall mpg ratings on the road. As such, according to GM Authority sources, the 2023 Corvette Z06 includes a $3,000 gas guzzler tax when equipped with either the T0G Carbon Aero package or T0F Carbon Aero package (T0G and T0F refer to the related package RPO codes). At $3,000, we can estimate that the 2023 Corvette Z06 with the optional aero returns between 16.5 and 17.5 combined mpg (adjusted figures using the five-cycle test procedures).

The T0G Carbon Aero package in visible carbon fiber includes the high-wing, dive planes, and visible carbon ground effects (CFV), while the T0F Carbon Aero package in a Carbon Flash-painted finish includes the high-wing, dive planes, and Carbon Flash-painted carbon ground effects. Both packages require the optional carbon ceramic brakes (RPO code J57).

Additionally, opting for the Z07 Performance Package requires selecting either the Carbon Flash-painted carbon fiber ground effects (RPO code CFZ) and Carbon Flash-painted carbon fiber high wing rear spoiler (RPO code T0F), or the visible carbon fiber ground effects (RPO code CFV) and visible carbon fiber high wing rear spoiler (RPO code T0G). With that in mind, the Z07 Package also means tacking on the slightly higher $3,000 gas guzzler tax.

As a reminder, the 2023 Corvette Z06 is motivated by the naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine, rated at 670 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Under the skin is the GM Y2 platform, while production will take place at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky.

    1. GM has always avoided the Gas Guzzler tax on the base model Corvette because of the effect on its mass-market price. The most prominent feature was the skip-shift system in the C4-C7.

I think the only reason you paid 10 percent is because you bought your car in the wrong state. Not all states charge 10 % sales tax on new cars.

  5. Any tax, anywhere, must be justified by a service the taxing authority provides in return for emptying your wallet. What possible justification is there for a money-grab ” Gas guzzler” tax levied by the unelected clowns at the EPA in cooperation with the tax and spend House ? Answer….NONE ! Always vote NO on any tax increase and vote those OUT who levy them.

    1. Wrong. CAFE standards are an EPA regulation, but the gas guzzler tax was passed by Congress in 1978 and was never adjusted since.

  6. I would get the carbon fiber aero package so that when I’m driving to Costco at 186 MPH I would have enough downforce. It is worth the extra tax so I don’t spin out. My 22 coupe with just 300 miles on it gave me 26 MPH driving it on the expressway at 80 MPH. Not sure if millage will improve as it gets more miles.

    1. And on the way to Costco you see a person having fun with their 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon climbing rocks with their Rubicon rated at EPA 16 mpg with no gas tax penalty! That’s fair!

  7. So you are going to vote for a guy in 2024 that can’t keep state secrets safe? I worked in defense, had access to only secret, and I took way way way way way way way… way more care handling documents than trump did. If it were you or I that misappropriated SCI and Top secret docs, we would already BE in prison. Catch a clue, it is a very big deal that Trump had compartmentalized secret docs. A friend while I worked there had top and some compartmentalized clearances. Annually he got a lie detector test and drug test. Annually. And they constantly were doing background checks on him to make sure he wasn’t being blackmailed or had gambling issues.

Not any investigation other than cursory by a rigged hearing (closed). Somehow over 30,000 emails found their way into the cyber trashcan.

I liked it better when gas was $2.50/gal for premium to feed my C8 Z51.

      1. If that were true then the FBI would have been on top of it.

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-618) established gas guzzler taxes. They were increased to their current rates in 1991. Inflation and its application to passenger cars only has pretty much negated the effect of the law.

    2. To date, Trump hasn’t been found guilty of doing anything wrong. The Dems have been trying for 6 years and will do what’s necessary to keep him out of office. Why? Trump puts America first, and Biden puts America last with open borders, high inflation, high gas, higher taxes, socialism, more wars, getting rid of all fossil fuels etc….

This is an auto forum and not a political forum however political policies have a direct effect on the price of our vehicles – gas, manufacturing costs, chips, parts etc…

We all have a right to vote for who we think will put America and the American people first.

  8. Just curious but does the new C8 Z06 get the same gas mileage as say a Chevy or GMC half ton pickup truck? I don’t think pickups have to pay a Gas Guzzler Tax even though they might get the same gas mileage in the real world. I can’t picture a late model light duty truck getting any better gas mileage than a C8 Z06, I may be wrong but the Z06 will be using premium gas of course while the light duty trucks can use regular gas. I’m seeing a double standard here plus, not that it makes any difference but I’m betting this Gas Guzzler Tax will not make any difference to anyone with enough money to actually buy a new Z06, just another “annoyance” that can be handled with more cash laid out at the time of purchase. Such is life.

    1. The Gas Guzzler tax was very relevant when Congress passed it in 1978, when everybody drove full-size sedans. It doesn’t apply to light trucks, and anyway, CAFE is much higher today. (Gas Guzzler kicks in at under 22.5 MPG, CAFE for cars in MY 2022 is 39.8-53.2, depending on size)

The problem is because Gas Guzzler is a law passed by Congress, it takes another law passed by Congress to change it. In contrast, CAFE is a NHTSA regulation which gets regularly adjusted by the executive branch, accounting for SUVs and the size of the vehicle.

Today, because of CAFE, all Gas Guzzler applies to is supercars, so it’s a supercar tax. It would look bad on anybody voting to remove it, so it stays.

  10. It’s so sad to see the government tax and regulate legitimate hobby pastimes. Auto sports. Shooting sports. Extra tax on use – Sports cars. Extra tax on ammunition – hunting and shooting sports. Also of interest is extra taxes on tobacco products, spirits, recreational drugs-Cannibis. I’m not a user of any of the later, but talking to distributors and retailers of these products mentioned, they indicated more consumers than ever before are buying these products.

Wait to you see use taxes calculated by GPS levied on electric vehicles along with registration and privilege tax fees. And you thought lodging tax and sales tax along with amenities fees for hotel – motel rooms was bad. How about night parking fees and daytime parking fees determined and generated by GPS on electric cars.

Tax and uncontrollably spend. It’s a new wonderful world.

If I could ask Mary just one question it would be this: If climate change is such a looming threat to the world that we must act now and transition to all EVs immediately, we does GM continue to build, and prioritize for production, so many gas guzzlers; why did GM eliminate its cleanest, most efficient offerings and continue to produce the worst offenders?

  15. Not that I’m a fan of any “fee” over MSRP….but I’m actually OK with paying a “gas guzzler” fee vs the “Market Adjustment “ that some stealerships have imposed.

  16. This Gas Guzzle Tax was implemented in 1978. We also know implementing this tax had no environmental impact. Today the tax only applies to supercars which for the most part are not daily drivers so again, it going to have a limited impact on the environment. If they were really concerned about the environment they would change the current policy that is applied to all trucks and cars not meeting the standards. Bottom line, I am not for the Gas Guzzle Tax, it’s just another form of taxation to the everyday American. They say buy electric. The more people buy EV’s the less they are going to collect in gas tax! So how will they make of that tax loss? The states and feds are already working on a proposal to tax electric vehicles on mileage driven. We are going to be swallowed up by taxes and monitored by the new 87k agents. Get ready!

Good comment, but taxes, regulations, mandates, are all political. However you view it, energy and climate are political. All this is affecting current and future mobility. One example is oil production and transport. Given the current political situation, it is driving record profits for producers and ocean carriers and artificially driving certain segments of the masses into electric cars. The American public can be manipulated and suckered. Just look at the horrible nutrition of fast and prepared foods and our gross rates of obesity. Why is it that health care is now the greatest portion of GNP, whereas steel and autos were post WW 2? This whole automobile business has turned into a huge crazy insane political animal.

And for those whining about the tax: If the amount of the tax, on $106K or higher car, is an impediment to your purchase you really can’t afford this car.
