2022 Buick Envision Among Best SUVs Under $40,000, Says Consumer Reports

The 2022 Buick Envision is among the best new crossovers available to purchase for less than $40,000, according to Consumer Reports.

A Consumer Reports owner survey gives the 2022 Buick Envision a score of 84 out of a possible 100 points, with the publication’s readers awarding it a perfect reliability score, as well as high scores in categories including driving experience, comfort, value, ride quality, cabin noise and fit and finish. The only problem areas identified by readers were the crossover’s less-than-stellar cargo space, average fuel economy ratings and unintuitive gear select system.

Consumer Reports also conducted a road test of the current-generation Buick Envision previously, giving the vehicle points for its strong braking performance, good ride quality, low cabin noise and easy-to-use infotainment system.

Pricing for the 2022 Buick Envision start at $32,695 for the entry-level Preferred trim with front-wheel drive and extend to $42,895 for the range-topping Avenir trim with all-wheel drive.

The 2022 Buick Envision is powered by the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LSY gasoline engine, which is rated at 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The four-cylinder is paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to either the front wheels as standard, or all four wheels as an available option.

GM introduced only minor changes to the Buick Envision for the 2022 model year. This included the deletion of the Dark Moon Metallic exterior color, which was indirectly replaced by Sapphire Metallic, the addition of a new 18-inch wheel option (RPO code PZK), the deletion of the In-Vehicle Air Ionizer system and, lastly, the introduction of expanded availability for the Continuous Damping Control suspension system.

All North American examples of the 2022 Buick Envision are produced exclusively at the GM Jinqiao plant in Shanghai, China.

It’s a small crossover. Which is the most popular size and body style in the U.S. right now.I’m guessing you’re projecting because you drive something like a 20 year old Japanese old man sedan.Or maybe you’re Idea of premium is something you can order double wide. Either way this is not for you. Move along.

60 is not 65. The average new vehicle buyer is 55. And that includes companies that struggle to get repeat buyers. Like Hyundai and Nissan

Some people on here can not accept the fact that not everyone is a fanboy of every single vehicle gm makes it bothers them so much they lash out at anyone who criticizes the beloved gm brand. What it really boils down to is they are snobs they are the people who wear a Rolex but then get furious when the person sitting next to them has a seiko on and someone gives the seiko owner a compliment and not them. Just ignore them they can’t help it.

The name of this site is GMAuthority. It is a place for people who like GM vehicles to have intelligent discussions on all things GM, and GM related. If you want to talk about your seiko watch you should go to sites like: MotorToyota, CamryDriver, Road of Crap, TrashTalkAmericanCars, MazdaOne, Corolla Reports. Extremely biased reporting has driven most of the GM fans away from these sites. So there is plenty of room for comments.

52 or 55 just means we’re looking at stats from different years. Your original 65+ comment was totally off. As the chip shortage ends and the Encore GX becomes more widely available should move much closer to industry average.
Buick has done a good job reinventing itself over the last few years. While competing brands like: Infiniti, Lincoln, Chrysler Mini, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Genesis and Jaguar all seem to be knocking on heavens door. Buick should be able to quickly gobble up market share. I think by the end of the decade Buick/GMC/Hummer will be the 4th highest volume dealer group in the country.

A lot of younger people really Cadillac now particularly the Escalade and I think most others would choose the gmc brand over Buick. Just my thoughts.

This wording is an example: “Some features shown may have limited, late or no availability. See dealer for feature availability.” I know one dealer, Lavery Buick in Alliance, Ohio, was taking reservations for the vehicles that are to be delivered top their dealership the soonest. Good luck finding the right Buick Envision for you!

There are a lot of positions at dealerships that are not in sales and our dealership doesn’t even have a used car lot. Facts are kind of tricky now aren’t they?

I WAS a police officer many years ago. No longer. I got out of it mostly due to the pukes like Issac and the complete disrespect that people like Issac (and maybe you) have towards the police. The pay wan’t nearly enough to put up with cr-p from people like that. So I moved on and still carry a ton of respect for those doing that thankless job. Much unlike people like Issac who think calling the police “pigs” is ok.

So you see Shawn, you were wrong in calling me a used car salesman. You were wrong in that I WAS a police officer for many years and the fact that I could have done that and work at a car dealership now. So say what you want. I post on here truth and facts as I understand and I don’t comment on things that I do not know about. GM imports about 1/3 of its vehicles sold in the U.S. Mostly from Canada and Mexico.
Toyota, Subaru and Hyundai/Kia import 1/2 the vehicles they sell in the U.S.
If GM runs short on Chinese made Envisions or Korean made Encores, Trailblazers and Sparks its no big deal.
The Imports they’re running short on Hyundai: Palasades, Santa Fe, Santa Cruz, Ioniq, Genesis(all). Subaru: Foresters, Crosstrek, BRZ, SRT/WMT Lexus (8 models) Toyota 4Runner, Venza, RAV4, RAV4Prime, CHR, CorollaHybrid, CorollaHatchback, Prius, PriusPrime
In short GM is an 🇺🇸 American 🇺🇸 company. They build most of their vehicles here they build their highend models here.
The imports 💩 are Imports 💩 they build their highend 💩 overseas, and build their lowend💩 here.

  6. As I see it Buick is the new Saturn selling only a bunch of imports from gm’s subsidiaries around the globe and none of them are especially “premium” or infused with much actual Buick DNA. That’s what Saturn was selling at the end. Nothing today approximates the Park Avenues and Rivieras of the past that positioned Buick in the luxury car ranks.

This Envision is just a Chinese import being sold to Americans as a Buick.

Now occupying the space Buick once had is Cadillac which has moved downmarket to a near-luxury positioning. They offer primarily rebodied or rebadged Chevys that are only marginally more upscale. Examples are XT4 and Escalade. For now, they still have a couple of hard core sedans too using Chevy engines. I’d say CT5 V competes with Dodge’s Charger as a sort of semi-premium product with a healthy dose of tire spinning capability.

At one time, Cadillac operated in the rarified stratosphere as Rolls Royce but not anymore. Today’s positioning is near-luxury way below the English makes, below the Germans and on par with the Japanese brands Acura and Infiniti.

    1. Ci2Eye I like your comment but the reak reason why Saturn is gone is three things yes what you mentioned was true about Saturn just selling imports is true… But there are two more reasons why Saturn doesn’t exist anymore. Number one being they couldn’t keep their promise at Saturn dealerships to sell a Saturn with no haggle pricing and the original Saturn lingo from the late 80’s when Saturn was born was “The price you see on the window sticker is the price you pay” when Saturn went under as a GM brand they where selling them like Chevy’s with dealer Mark up and inflating the price. Number two Saturn was competing with Chevy and Pontiac to much I mean a Saturn sky was basically a Pontiac solstice with different body work and the Saturn Ion was a copy of the Chevy Cobalt…. Clearly Saturn by the end had lost their way as a unique brand within GM. Noe Buicks being imported from China I am not to crazy about but if it helps them sell here then I am all for it, my wife has a 2019 Buick Enclave that we absolutely love and it’s made in the USA. Now Buicks being for old people 🤣 LMAO… Have you seen Lexus drivers they are not exactly spring chickens either… It’s not about being old it’s about getting into a Buick and enjoying the nice quiet interior and shutting out the world around you for a while…It’s also called being mature and liking a mature luxury automobile. I am 43 years old and I love Buick.

At the prices listed in the article the Envision would be a terrific value but at the prices I have seen, not so much. For $40 – $60k+ it’s a crowded market with many better options.

The positive thing about buying this vehicle is that GM reaps the corporate profits on the vehicle. When you buy a Japanese vehicle, even if assembled in the US, the profits go overseas.

    1. Tom Gregory,

That’s not really true. Buying a Chinese made Envision gives jobs to thousands of people in China both at the plant, at supplier facilities, and in logistics. Indeed gm does get a little money in profit but the Chinese government requires them to share that with their local “partner” which is SAIC so 50 percent of the profit made off of a US Envision sale stays in China. What’s left after all that to come back to the US is very little actual money.

Further, ask yourself what is gm doing with the profits they make? Are they building new plants in the US? No, they’ve upgraded a plant or two here but mostly they’ve shut down US facilities and the last two plants they’ve built, both opening in 2008, were built in Mexico. They shut down US plants. Then there’s the issue of Mary Barra. She’s the second highest paid CEO of any American company collecting $40.3 million according to a study by Automotive News/Equilar.

So what are we left with? Lots of workers make money on an Envision in China but no American workers do. SAIC, a Chinese company gets half the profits from an Envision sale. Then the half gm gets helps to pay Mary’s exorbitant salary, the highest in the industry, or if it gets invested towards new production facilities, it’ll likely be spent in Mexico.

I just don’t see the rationalization that an Envision is better for America that a transplant carmakers’ product. I live in Georgia. Lots of my fellow citizens actually make their living off of BMWs built in South Carolina, Nissans and Volkswagens built in Tennessee, or Honda’s and Mercedes rolling off the line in Alabama. In Georgia itself, there’s a new Kia plant whereas gm shut down and fired the Georgians that once worked at their Lakewood and Doraville assembly plants. I used to feel the way you do; that it’s better to support a US company and I do still somewhat feel that way but not in the case of the Envision.

The Buick Envision is built in a Communist country with designs on overtaking America as the world’s great superpower. If they do, they’d seek to impose their authoritarian rule over the entire world and shut down the freedoms we hold dear. Ask the good people of Hong Kong how things are going for them. Mainland China has now shut down Apple Daily and Stand as they tighten their reins on free speech and continue to violate their 1997 handover agreement with the UK. I don’t want to ever see Americans ruled by China so why feed the monster? Why send your money over there? Why strengthen them at the expense of your homeland? I think an Alabama built Honda Pilot is better for Americans than a Chinese Buick. Maybe it’s not better for Mary Barra’s bank account but it is better for the rest of us.

  13. Well, I bought the Buick 2021 Envision Evanier AWD and went to the service more than 4 times in the first month. They charge me extra for nitro gas for my tires saying it will help with the low tire pressure. IT DIDNT HELP! My tire pressure goes low all the time.
They say cabin noise is low , but I have this wind noise coming from the driver side window which is very annoying and they have no parts to fix it. I have reachout to Services, sales and to customer service requesting to resolve this issue but theres no help. Customer support took all the information and promised someone will get back to me within a couple of days, but it’s been a month and no one has called me back yet. I have spend $48,000 + on this suv and I am very upset and frustrated. I still love the suv for all its other comfort, massage sest, smooth drive and its look, I just need the noise to stop.
I wish they live upto their stranded and and call me back to resolve my issue.

    1. Beatrice: Sorry to hear about your issues. The tire thing is such a joke and whoever sold you the car probably didn’t even put nitro in. There’s a reason why I have several digital tire gauges and use them often. Dealerships are notorious for just pumping air into a tire and not really properly checking it with a correct gauge.

As for the wind noise, I’d highly recommend taking the car to another Buick dealership and have them check it out.

      1. This is why I will wait and get a Buick Envision used not only will I not have to $48,000 plus for it… But all the brand new car kinks will be worked out. Besides I bet you will be able to find a gently used Envision in two years for like $25,000 with maybe 30,000 miles on it like my wife found her Enclave last year two years old low mileage and the price was $28,000 instead of $50,000 plus and it’s like a new vehicle inside and out. I have owned two “brand new” cars in my life and let me tell that new car thing maybe lasts six months if your lucky… Then you realize you should have wa6a year or two to find a used car at a better deal! 😎
