GMC Hummer EV Pre-Production Now Underway At Factory Zero Plant

General Motors has begun pre-production of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan.

Pre-production versions of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began rolling off the assembly line at Factory Zero this week, UAW Local 22 President Wiley Turnage told The Detroit Free Press in an interview. The plant is still undergoing renovations in preparation for the start of series production later this year.

Around 435 employees are currently working on pre-production of the new battery-electric pickup truck. GM has said the Factory Zero plant, which represents a $2.2 billion investment from GM, will eventually employ up to 2,200 people once running at full capacity. In addition to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the facility will eventually add the GMC Hummer EV SUV to its roster, along with the Cruise Origin robotaxi and the Chevy Silverado EV.

With the start of pre-production this week, Turnage said the plant is on schedule to begin deliveries of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 “later this year.” The Edition 1 represents the range-topping trim level for 2022 and is priced from $112,595. It will come standard with a three-motor powertrain producing more than 1,000 horsepower, which will be able to propel the 9,000-pound pickup from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat, with range-per-charge sitting at around 350 miles.

Other standard equipment on the Edition 1 trim level will include an Extreme Off-Road Package with 18-inch wheels and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, Infinity Roof panels, 800-volt DC fast charging capability and the latest version of GM’s hands-free Super Cruise technology. This trim will only be available in a white exterior with a unique Lunar Horizon interior and special ‘Edition 1’ interior badging.

GM has received around 10,000 pre-orders for the GMC Hummer EV so far. Not all pre-orders are for the Edition 1 trim level, which sold out in a matter of minutes following the vehicle’s debut earlier this year. Lesser trim levels will include the tri-motor Hummer EV3X, dual-motor Hummer EV2X and the entry-level Hummer EV2. The EV3X will enter production in the Fall of 2022, followed by the EV2X in Spring 2023 and finally the EV2 in Spring 2024.

  1. lg is paying gm $1.9bn for bolt battery problems.

    1. LG has ultimately agreed to pay GM’s “cost and expenses” for the Bolt Recall, having set aside $1.2B so far, but that number will grow, GM estimates the total cost of $1.9B to LG… Once again, go back and read my replys when this started, this is exactly what I predicted.

LG has taken nearly 100% responsibility.

  2. Very poorly written article with incomplete and /or inaccurate data. There are far more than 10K HummerEV reservations, Surveying dealerships in large and small markets, most have an average 100 pre orders, and there are over 1000 dealerships participating in the HummerEV program. The dealers I have talked to have on average 8 Edition 1 pre orders, and over 10X that in other configurations. One dealer I talked to has almost 100 people on the Edition 1 wait list and 11 Edition 1 reservations total.

I think the real HummerEV reservation number is closer to 10X that stated by this article.

BTW, another of my prediction about the ring true, GM has figured out that Factory Zero will not be able to keep up with BT1 vehicle demand by 2024, and is going to announce another new factory for BT1 vehicles soon. I hear it will be a new truck plant and battery plant on the same campus.

    1. With Fairfax, Orion, and Lansing Grand River running below capacity, I do not think that GM would build another assembly plant.

    2. Dear Donavan, With so many old empty factories around, are they considering revamping any existing factories to build their EVs in order to reduce their impact on our environment?

    3. If you do any significant research on the topics of GMA articles you will find that most of their articles reveal a lack of research effort and poor knowledge base of the subject at hand. Some of the writers are pretty good and GMA does have a few good insider sources so I take them seriously but always do further reading to confirm the GMA article wasn’t off on a wild tangent. Case in point: the C8 E-Ray GM supposedly shipped to Nürburgring to drive on public roads but not the Nürburgring track. Look into it further and you’ll find that it was a ZO6 and the E-Rays are all stateside.

      1. That’s exactly the attitude that is GM’s downfall: they have contempt for their customers who buy lower end cars. Test drive a Bolt if you don’t believe me. That is a car designed as one great big insult to the buyer. The interior and seats are so cheap and badly designed it’s as if they consulted with back doctors to devise a seat that would cause back problems. Total junk.

Contrast with the Mustang Mach-E, which strives to provide customers with value. It’s a much different mindset and that’s why Ford has never gone bankrupt.

  4. The Hummer EV is already a special BEV and 1001 HP have now become normal. I think the price of 100T dollars is really low, because all comparable BEV SUVs from other manufacturers are more expensive!
Outlook and my wish: For the upcoming smaller SUV, SAV, Sedan, Coupe and Cabriolet, I would like to thank GM for the low pricing so that ordinary citizens can also buy or lease GM BEVs. The state subsidies will not last forever!
I’m particularly looking forward to the Corvette EV with a weight of 3333 pounds and 1111HP with a 111kWh lightweight battery and a top speed of 222mls per hour. 0-60mls in 2 seconds and of course at least 2 or 3 gear transmission.
It is also important that GM has BEVs that can drive many miles per kWh.
Currently, the BEV of GM’s competitors are real power guzzlers!

  5. Can anyone explain exactly what preproduction models means? Are they talking about testing cars? There already seems to be plenty of those on the internet or are they talking about the skateboard platforms with batteries, motors, and wheels? I do have an EV First Edition on order but I have no expectation of actually receiving one by the end of the year. I waited 15 months for my 2020 C8.

  7. I’m broke, but a girl can still dream. The new hummer looks amazing. To bad the average Joe & Jane can’t afford it. But I tell you what, I’d show this puppy off every chance I get with the big leaguers at my work place! Maybe even get a “Merica” flag to put on it, with my middle finger flying high out my window… after all, isn’t what this type of vehicle is supposed to represent; the wild, rebellious & free spirit people. 😏😑

  8. One battery fire away from an EV program disaster. That goes for every brand. Invest elsewhere. Apple and Amazon did great for us.

  9. Normally a new program goes from concept to component to prototype to pilot and then pre-production. Prototype is proof of design, pilot is proof of production at a very low line rate and pre-production is proof of being able to build the vehicle at normal line rates. Pre-production vehicles are normally sold and driven by company car executives.
