General Motors has issued a service update for certain vehicles that use its VIP and GEM architectures in order to reprogram the vehicles’ control modules.
The problem: certain 2020 and 2021 model year General Motors vehicles may have had multiple control modules dealer programmed using an incorrect Vehicle Identification Number that did not match the actual VIN of the vehicle, resulting in an incorrect VIN or an incorrect calibration file being programmed into the vehicle.
The hazards: if a vehicle receives an incorrect calibration file, certain control modules may not be calibrated properly. This can affect various important systems in the vehicle and prevent them from working as designed. It’s worth noting that General Motors has only issued a service update for affected vehicles and not a product safety recall, which is an indication that this issue likely poses no direct safety hazard to the driver or other vehicle occupants.
The fix: dealers will be instructed to follow the appropriate module programming event as it relates to the VIN. This will effectively reprogram the affected control modules and allow them to perform as originally intended.
Affected components: various control modules.
Affected vehicles:
- 2021 Buick Envision
- 2020 Cadillac CT4
- 2020 Cadillac CT5
- 2020 Chevy Corvette
- 2021 Chevy Onix
- 2021 Chevy Suburban
- 2021 Chevy Tahoe
- 2021 GMC Yukon
- 2021 GMC Yukon XL
Number of affected vehicles: it is currently not clear how many vehicles received improper control module programming.
Next steps: owners can wait for General Motors to reach out to them to make an appointment with their dealership. This service update is for vehicles in dealership inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason in the future. Dealers and owners can reach out to Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC directly using the contact information included below with any questions or concerns they may have. The service update was first issued in October 2021 and will expire at the end of the truck’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty Period.

Hope they put the Yukon front end on the redesigned pickup trucks.

Accounting rules be damned, if GM didn’t code the right VIN into your car, there are legal implications to that, regardless of component. No customer should ever pay if they found their VIN was miscoded later.
This is why Tesla is winning. They may charge $10,000 for a drive motor, but they would never charge for something petty like this out of warranty, when they’re the ones that mucked it up.
Chris how can a 2020 or 2021 vehicle be out of warranty already? This why I always say at the end of day the extended warranty is worth it’s weight in gold.
The problem isn’t GM miscoded the VIN, the problem is GM’s new PC diag software, Techline Connect, made it possible to cross-download software for another VIN if a dealer (who is not a GM employee) or third-party mechanic didn’t properly select the car they were working on. (See Techlink Article “Techline Connect Tips from the TCSC”)
Anyway, if they’re bugging you for 2+ years to do essentially a recall, and you ignore them, it’s really on you.
And if you think Tesla is any better, go ask them about the yellowing LCDs.
You don’t think that this ample time to get a simple procedure such as a reprogram done?

Of course this happens on #FridayThe13th. #Tesla update fail. Detached all my “keys” and bricked the car. Couldn’t even set it to Tow mode. Tow truck backed all the way into my garage to get car out. On a positive note, bus 🚌 dropped boys off at home. I took BK’s #scooter, and made him take the #skateboard. We made it to #Kumon on time. #TGIF
What happens when an OTA update fails on a Tesla? Do you think that they take any responsibility or do they just blame your sh!t WiFi connection? You would think that you idiots would have an ethernet cable or two lying around.
I can do this all day dude.”The latest update, 2018.14, was pulled remotely by Tesla, we can only speculate what bug caused them to do that. You’ll get another update when Tesla pushes out another update and selects your car again. If anything, postponing the update probably helped you to dodge a bullet with regards to a bug serious enough to halt the rollout.”
Mabey american union automakers are trying so hard to protect dealerships from their inevitable demise is so dealerships can be on standby for recall work!!!
