Voice assistants have become essential for hands-free convenience, and GM vehicle owners can now take advantage of Amazon Alexa integration through OnStar. This feature adds functionality to compatible GM vehicles, enabling drivers to handle tasks like navigation, communication, and entertainment seamlessly. Now, we’re taking a closer look at how to set up and use Amazon Alexa in compatible GM vehicles.
There are currently five OnStar plans that offer the Voice Assistant feature, which includes either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Among the five compatible plans are three Bundle and Save Plans (Premium Plan, $52.99 per month; Preferred Plus Wi-Fi Plan, $46.99 per month; and the Preferred Plan, $31.99 per month), as well as two Stand-Alone Plans (Connected Vehicle Plan, $26.99 per month; and the App Access Plan, $14.99 per month). Connecting to Amazon Alexa will also require the user to have an Amazon account.
To set up Amazon Alexa on a compatible GM vehicle, start by tapping the Amazon Alexa icon on the vehicle infotainment screen. Users will then be prompted to link their Amazon account to their vehicle, which can be accomplished either by scanning a QR code with their smartphone, or signing into their account online using a specific code.
After signing in, accept the terms and conditions. Users are also given the option to make Alexa the vehicle default voice assistant. After setting everything up, users will be able to use Alexa by pressing the voice button on the steering wheel, or by saying “Alexa.”
Amazon Alexa provides a range of functionality, including navigation – for example, a user can say “Alexa, navigate to work,” and the system will display directions and a map. The system can also be used to place phone calls (“Alexa, call Jane Smith”), or select entertainment options (“Alexa, play the Tell Me What Happened Podcast on Spotify”).
With hands-free voice command, users can stay focused on the road, all while leveraging the latest tech features onboard their vehicle.
