Although Chevrolet Argentina sales decreased in May – the second full month of stay-at-home orders brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic – sales actually recovered compared to April, and showed a smaller percentage of contraction. Case in point: Chevrolet recorded just 434 registrations in April 2020, representing a drastic 89 percent drop in sales volume over April 2019. By comparison, the Bow Tie brand delivered 1,875 vehicles in May, representing a 54 percent decline in May 2019. The improvement is the result of the reopening of the Chevrolet Argentina dealer network during the second week of May.
Despite the recovery in May compared to April, all of the brand’s models showed significant declines in sales, with the most affected being the Camaro and the discontinued Cobalt and Prisma. And though the Chevrolet Onix remained Chevy’s best-selling model in May, the subcompact model range lost its best-selling spot in Argentina to the Toyota Hilux midsize pickup by only 18 units (1,016 for the Hilux and 998 for the Onix).
This circumstance makes the Onix the country’s second best-selling vehicle following three consecutive months as the undisputed best-seller. We posit that this disruption is temporary, and that the Onix will return to its rightful place as Argentina’s best-selling car in due time once things return to normal following the negative impacts of COVID-19.
At a time of year when luxury car ATP usually rises.
Sales decreased 5.6 percent to 16,670 units during the first ten months of 2024.
