Competitive Sales Comparison
The Cadillac XT6 saw 4,316 deliveries during its first full quarter on sales in the U.S. market. The numbers place the three-row, “midsize-plus” crossover in sixth place (out of seven) in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, ahead of its crosstown rival, the Lincoln Aviator. That said, neither the Cadillac XT6 nor the Lincoln Aviator were fully available during the quarter, with the first units of the XT6 arriving at dealers toward the end of Q2 and the first units of the Aviator arriving mid-Q3. As such, the XT6 was more widely available than the Aviator during Q3 2019, explaining its sales lead.
The Acura MDX led the segment in first place, followed by the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave (see Buick Enclave sales) – in second, Volvo XC90 in third (see Volvo XC90 sales), Infiniti QX60 in fourth, and the Audi Q7 in fifth (see Audi Q7 sales). All five models outsold the XT6.

From a segment share standpoint, the MDX led the way with a 24 percent share, followed by Enclave with 22 percent, Volvo XC90 and Infiniti QX60 with 15 percent each, and the Audi Q7 with 14 percent. The Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator accounted for 7 and 3 percent segment share, respectively.
The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment expanded 10 percent to 60,261 units in Q3 2019.
For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of what’s taking place, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RX L, which competes with luxury three-row models mentioned above. But since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales.

The GM Authority Take
Third quarter Cadillac XT6 sales, the first full quarter of the crossover on the market, appear rather promising, considering it has already made up quite a bit of ground with its 7 percent market share, a solid start compared to the rivals from Audi, Volvo, and Infiniti, which hold 14-15 percent market share.
We believe that the Cadillac XT6 sales performance is the result of various crucial factors coming together at just the right time, and GM delivering on all levels, including product, marketing, sales operations, and demand. The product is, arguably, the most important of these elements, and similar to the Enclave, the XT6 hits the mark as a result of a very good, practical, and highly attractive offering that has the right mix of style, comfort, technology and other desirable factors. Though some have derided the XT6 as being less attractive than the competition, particularly when compared to the Lincoln Aviator, the sales figures seem to show otherwise.
Going forward, we expect Cadillac XT6 sales to continue growing, so long as GM can maintain adequate levels of supply by producing the vehicle and delivering it to customers. The automaker had trouble doing that in the fourth quarter of 2019 as a result of the UAW strike, which lasted over a month. As such, we will likely see XT6 sales dip in Q4 2019 and then skyrocket in Q1 2020, on improved availability and pent-up demand.

About Cadillac XT6
The Cadillac XT6 is a three-row premium luxury crossover. The model represents a new addition to the Cadillac model range as part of the brand's crossover expansion strategy. It slots above the the compact Cadillac XT4 and midsize Cadillac XT5 in the Cadillac crossover SUV lineup. Its size classification can be best described as "midsize plus", as it is bigger than midsize but not big enough to be classified as full-size.
The XT6 was announced at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January 2019 and goes on sale in the spring of the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model. It is based on the regular-length variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the XT5, but with more rear overhang than the XT5. That extended rear overhang enables it to accommodate a third row. The rest of the vehicle is very similar to the XT5, including its engine, transmission, and cockpit.
The XT5 is produced at the following GM plants globally:
- GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee or GM Lansing Delta plant operated by GM USA supplying North American markets
- Cadillac China Jinqiao factory operated by Shanghai-GM supplying the Chinese market

wasn’t lincoln aviator sales restricted due to production problems? ford tried to do too much and the rollout for the aviator and the explorer was plagued with problems.
anyway, motortrend did a head-to-head comparison between the two. according to them, the aviator won and “it was not even close”.
https://www.motortrend.com/cars/lincoln/aviator/2020/2020-lincoln-aviator-vs-2020-cadillac-xt6-comparison/
Yeah, because the mass-market actually read or care what self-proclaimed auto experts really have to say when making a decision on what car fits their needs.
“But the Aviation’s will blow everyone’s mind and better the Escalade…….”
Told the Ford trolls the XT6 will outsell it 2 to 1, suburban mamas don’t care for performance. Not saying the Aviator’s bad it wasn’t going to be a sales leader.
Again,
Just put the numbers of Cadillac mid-sized SUV sales total.
Sure both of the new Cadillacs added a few sales, but what was the number ?
Both the XT4 and this XT6 just took sales from the XT5.
So, yes, Cadillac did increase total sales with the addition of these two new SUVs.
But are the total numbers more than other vehicles GM has killed ?
I like both the new XTs, and I would have preferred a RWD/AWD with a little more power, but I guess its just me.
But I still don’t think the new Cadillac mid-sized SUVs will draw any formidable numbers to the Cadillac brand.
Most buyers know they can just buy the Chevrolet or better yet the Enclave for less money,
and get the same old average GM blah ” Good Enough ” 3.6 !
It just seems funny to me that GM would be happy with the sales numbers of these mid-sized Cadillac SUVs
But I’m sure someone here will put the total additional sales with the drop in sales of the XT5.
We will see, we always do.
My opinion.
The Aviator has better styling, a nicer interior and good hp and torque. After reading the motortrend article i have decided to visit both the Cadillac and the Lincoln dealers in the New Year. If you put them side by side all i see is nicer lines on the Aviator. That is not so easy to say but it is the truth. (my opinion)
I still cannot wrap my head around the styling language of these Cadillac sedans. The SUV’s are just the opposite for me. They are looking good. Sales are sales. People vote with their money. To each their own but they both should be examined before biases render judgement. And competition is a good thing when it comes to vehicles.
I, for one, really like the XT6 other than the (non) name. It’s really a nice looking vehicle in person. With that said, my take-away on this article is this:
Sales of the XT6 sit year to date at 4,390.
Sales of the smaller XT5 are down 8,272 year to date.
The take-away is that the XT6 is certainly taking some sales away from the XT5, but just how many? I’m certain that the XT6 total sales are NOT all from the XT5, but any way you break it down, those numbers do not look so hot to me. Let’s assume that around 30% of those XT6 sales would have gone to the XT5. That would leave only about 3,000 total sales YTD for the XT6 and the XT5 would still be down. What gives?
Im not a particular fan of the XT-6, it’s more of a premium CUV than a luxury CUV to me. But GM is unto something here. They need to push this and their other CUVs to the coasts heavily. GM must regain their once ubiquitous presence on all the US seaboards, their CUVs gives them another chance at this.
This is a mixed blessing at this point. There are things Cadillsc needs to address with more options and better materials. It also should have more than just a corporate engine.
The class these are in you can afford to load them up vs a Chevy as you can only charge so much for a Chevy. GM can not over price some models but they can Lincoln.
As for styling there is nothing wrong here it is distinctive but not offensive. You know it is a Cadillac on sight. The Lincoln is pleasant but it fades in the crowd. You could remove the badges and many could not Name who made it.
My fear is if this one does well future products my still be lacking.
I would b e hard pressed to move up to the XT6 price over my Denali when it is pretty much same same vehicle for a lot less.
I guess the goofy Cadillac ads are working compared to the serious Lincoln ads. I think the Cadillac ads appeal more to the females that buy this vehicles largely. In engineering school one of my good professors always said that the technically superior product does not always win because consumers are dumb. On paper the Lincoln should eventually blow away all of the FWD competitors out of the water in time. Either way I do wish Lincoln great success with their products and the same for Cadillac. I am on team USA and would like to see a great resurgence of American Luxury. Hopefully my fellow Americans will seriously consider buying domestic going forward.
The Mathew M and the haggard mother commercials are no better.
No style or class.
