The GM Authority Take

We maintain that the Envision is perfectly positioned to be the best-seller in the front-drive premium compact crossover segment, where it competes very favorably against the likes of the Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC and Acura RDX. As such, we believe that Buick Envision deliveries can be even higher — in the 5,000 – 6,000 per month range.

However, we believe that the Envision’s overall sales potential is currently restricted by limited available production capacity at the GM China facility called the Dung Yue Motors factory — where it is assembled for the Chinese as well as North American markets. Hence, the only way that the increased sales volumes can be achieved is to either expand capacity at the Dung Yue plant or add manufacturing capability for the vehicle at a GM North America factory. In this hypothetical scenario, a GM North America plant would build Envisions for sale in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, while the Dung Yue plant will exclusively handle production for China.

Alas, we do not know whether such a plan is part of GM’s strategy.

  1. Honestly for the inventories as of now dealers are mostly having high volume on the essence and the basic model while the premium I and II are being kept low (about one or two) unless it’s a bigger city then the higher end models are kept about the same as the volume model

  2. all Envision series are over priced and they need to be built in the USA

    1. I don’t think they will bring assembly here because the industry is starting to soften and GM expects it to worsen.

    2. Tom G,

As long as GM isn’t seeing a sea of unsold Envasions, they aren’t going to build them here. Rather they’ll transfer more models to Chinese production.

I expect to see more Buicks and more Cadillacs shipped in from China in the future if Americans exhibit no reservations about buying this Buick and the Chinese made Cadillac CT6.

      1. This segment is predicted to grow, and is also highly profitable. This isn’t Chevy we’re talking about, so tooling Lordstown to build this wouldn’t be a crazy idea. If it were Chevy, imagine a base Equinox starting at $34,000.

      2. items from CHINA ( communist country ) don’t last –made like crap. American autos or any other American products must remain to be assembled in America by American hands ,if you don’t mind it made in china go live & work there.!!!!

        1. So would you say the same about American Products made in Mexico like the Cruze Hatchback?

          Reply
          1. I’d say no. Mexico is our neighbor and it’s in our best interest to see them prosper and do well. A strong Mexico solves a lot of our problems. Mexico also has no designs at the moment on becoming the world’s reigning superpower and displacing the United States. Further, even if they did, they are more culturally and politically similar to America so Mexico as the dominant world power wouldn’t represent the sea-change that China would.

China is a geo-political threat to the United States while Mexico is not. Of course the argument can be made that by intertwining ourselves with China and creating an interdependent relationship, we neutralize the threat which is a valid point but increasingly China doesn’t have to have our markets for continued success.

  4. GM is in the business of making money and if it is cheaper to expand production at the Dung Yue facility that’s what they will do .
At launch into our country the plan was to sell 30,000 units a year , if the Envision is capable of selling 5-6000 units a year then it’s time for the UAW to start pressuring GM to build them here for the N.A market .
The problem is some Americans are so used to buying products with the ” Made in China ” stamp that cars are just another item and couldn’t care less where it’s built . The dealerships don’t care as long as they can continue to sell them . Profit is the bottom line . Welcome to the new World Order .

  5. Remember that this vehicle got a luke warm reception everywhere — outside of the Chinese import factor. This means if it’s got some needed tweaks and built domestically it could be begin to dominate.

    1. Wasn’t Envision supposed to be a niche model hence the importing from China? Envision given it’s higher than average price has more than caught on, but I agree tweeks are needed.
I was hoping that Mark Adams would take over Buick after the Opel sale. He is needed given the ugly duckling Envision and BN’s Chrysler Concorde-inspired Lacrosse.

  6. The Envision must stay competitive in this segment. This means GM needs to update for the ’19 model year with the “new-look” Buick grill, more sophisticated rear end, and other high-end touches. This market seems to be similar to the RDX, which Acura does a great job of exuding a high-end feel.
The Buick can compete by matching the up-market touches and selling Americans on the Buick tradition.

  7. Imagine how it would sell if they made the damn thing in the states and lowered the prices a bit. Anybody I showed this vehicle to liked what they saw but were turned off as soon as they saw that it was made in China on the window sticker.

    1. Not sure if it would be cheaper made here than China

  8. Envision –good looking- with all upscale equipment — Buick needs this suv model to fill the gap but 2 points are a BIG negative MADE IN CHINA and over priced for that market –build it in AMERICA & lower the cost it will be a star.

    1. Again I don’t think switching assembly to here in the U.S. is going to lower the price.
