GM sales decreased 1.5 percent to 746,659 units during the second quarter of 2019 in the U.S. market. Sales decreased at Chevrolet while increasing and Cadillac, Buick, and GMC.
GM Sales Notes – U.S. Q2 2019
Sale types:
- Total GM sales during Q2 2019 decreased 1.5 percent to 746,659 units
- GM states that these results are “in line with third-party estimates for industry sales” and “estimates that its retail market share was even with a year ago, with truck and crossover deliveries offsetting lower passenger car sales.”
- GM did not provide detailed information on retail vs. fleet deliveries, a significant and notable departure from the way it reported previously (on a monthly basis), and the way in which it promised to continue to report after beginning to report sales on a quarterly basis
- Crossover sales set a new second-quarter record, with sales growing 17 percent year-over-year.
- Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab were both up 12 percent year over year.
“The light-duty segment is the highest-volume part of the pickup market and we are expanding choice to make sure that we meet the needs of every customer,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations. “Heavy-duty trucks, by contrast, are about 25 percent of full-size pickup sales. Our HDs are purpose-built machines for people who need maximum capability, and we are poised for significant growth.”
Full-size pickup truck launch update – 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500:
- GM has installed new body shops, upgraded paint shops and reconfigured general assembly at its plants to increase capacity by 20,000 units compared with the outgoing model.
- Based on the most recent data available, retail customers have registered more GM full-size light-duty pickups in 2019 than either Ford or Ram. GM light-duty registrations have also led Ford F-150 in 11 of the last 12 months.
- The first new GM models to launch were the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra crew cabs in late summer 2018. Sales of each were up more than 12 percent in the second quarter versus a year ago.
- After two consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year growth, GM’s crew cab mix has risen from 60 percent of sales to almost 75 percent.
- Full production of all cab styles started in March for both retail and fleet orders, and inventory is approaching target levels, especially for the most affordable regular and double cab models. Sales of these models were down year over year due to limited availability.
- Customer demand for Chevrolet’s new Trail Boss models – the first full-size pickups equipped with a 2-inch factory-installed lifted suspension – have far exceeded expectations, so GM will double production. In addition, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will offer Trail Boss models with a 420 horsepower, 6.2L V8 L87 engine.
- More than 95 percent of all-new GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab sales are high-end trims including SLT, AT4, and Denali.
- GM is introducing a new refined, very powerful and extremely fuel-efficient 3.0-liter Duramax diesel that is expected to be available later this quarter.
Full-size pickup truck launch update – 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2020 GMC Sierra HD:
- GM has consolidated heavy-duty pickup production at the GM Flint Assembly plant in Michigan. The company has installed new body and paint shops and created 1,000 new jobs to support a capacity increase of 40,000 units compared to the outgoing model.
- The company is sharply increasing the production of crew cab and diesel models to meet customer demand.
- Early production will be focused primarily on crew cab models, similar to the light-duty launch cadence. Trucks began shipping to dealers in the second half of June, with availability expected to grow throughout the third and fourth quarters.
New vehicle launches:
GM plans to launch several other new models this year, including the Cadillac XT6 – Cadillac’s first three-row crossover – and the Cadillac CT5 luxury-sport sedan.
Average Transaction Prices (ATPs) & Incentive Spending:
- GM’s average transaction prices (ATP) rose by $1,575 to a second-quarter record of $37,126, compared to an industry average of $33,681, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
- GM’s average incentive spending as a percentage of ATP was 12.6 percent, down from 13.4 percent in the second quarter of 2018, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
Fleet mix:
- GM’s fleet mix of total sales was 23 percent during the second quarter.
- Fleet sales were up 3 percent during the quarter, with the majority of deliveries going to Commercial and Government customers.
Inventory:
- End of June inventory was 809,387 units, up about 22,000 units year over year, reflecting new model launches.
SAAR:
- The U.S. light-vehicle SAAR for the first half of the year is expected to be a healthy 17.0 million units, according to GM Chief Economist Elaine Buckberg.
“The U.S. economy continues to grow at a healthy pace. Jobs are plentiful and inflation remains low,” said Buckberg. “Auto demand was better than anticipated in the first half and we expect strong performance in the second half of the year. If the Fed cuts rates, as widely expected, lower financing costs will provide further support to auto sales.”

About The Numbers
- All percent change figures compared to GM Q2 2018 sales, except if noted
- There were 77 selling days in Q2 2019 and 77 selling days in Q2 2018
- Starting in September 2016, GM began reporting sales of the Chevrolet City Express and Low Cab Forward on a single line entitled Commercial Truck. Upon discontinuing the City Express, GM stopped reporting sales of that model and began to report Low Cab Forward sales separately.
- Vehicle totals include discontinued models, possibly including Verano, ELR, SRX, Caprice, Captiva Sport, City Express and SS. GM refused to break out sales for these models upon request. We have broken out sales results of these discontinued models where possible. When doing so was not possible, we bundled these models into the “other” line item.

Not a bad performance, especially considering the many thousands of Cruze sales which are no longer there. So profits are likely up?
When is the next bailout? Subaru sales are up while building the type of vehicles GM says don’t sell. I’m sure they make less profit per unit, but then they are more in the car business, not so much in the profit business.
@magirus:
So you don’t seem to understand how business works. Nor understand CVT vs. traditional transmissions.
“I’m sure they make less profit per unit, but then they are more in the car business, not so much in the profit business.”
Enough said.
Subaru doesn’t have a successful crossover/SUV business, and it has no truck business to speak of. So it must make do with what it has – cars. It’s trying to get into crossovers… and it will be a tough path in a world of highly-established and competitive rivals.
But yes, GM made the decision to stop competing in segments in which it could not find ways to win – namely the compact car space, and instead use its energies for where it thinks the market is moving to – crossovers, EVs and autonomous vehicles. It makes more money making all those vehicles anyway.
The decision was analogous to Opel sale: trim the company billions of expenses that bring in very little to no revenue (sometimes losses)… and focus on what makes the big bucks, and sell more of it. The mainstream Chevrolet cars are roughly identical.
Note that I believe GM’s decision to dump mainstream passenger cars is probably temporary. I do believe that they will come back, but with different nameplates and as EVs… rather than gasoline/diesel models. Getting there is expensive… and something needed to go. Might as well be the stuff that doesn’t make much of a return.
To paraphrase the great Wayne, “Skate to where the puck will be, not where it has been.”

Yes, Subaru sales were up 2.8% when compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile at the other Japanese brands:
Toyota down 3.5%; Lexus down 3.0%
Honda down 6.3%; Acura down 16.4%
Nissan down 14.9%; Infiniti down 8.0%
Mazda down 11.9%
You may want to rethink your anti-GM stance.
Some bright spots and some not so bright. I expect the financial reports to be good considering ATP is up.
XT4 should be selling more in my eyes as it’s selling ~2400 a month. Inventory still building up?
Wonder how the trucks will do once the cheaper models are more available. GM pushing the news about crew cab sales being high is a PR stunt against the overall falling sales
The availability of the 6.2 and 10-speed in the affordable RST/TB trims, and 3.0L Dmax in an LT trim, will be a big boost in sales. Ram is throwing all the money they can scrounge up on the hood of 2019’s to gain market share, but they should get the quality issues addressed first. They have a lot of first time Ram owners that end up dealing with a lot of quality issues and they walk away from the brand, possibly for life, because the experience was so poor. I still won’t ever buy a Honda again after all the quality issues I went through with them.
Neil B,
So you don’t think the GM truck sales are down do to the Quality issues or the 8 speed transmission troubles, the interior look, the Chevrolet front end look, price for value, and no GM customer support ?
Always an excuse .
What I don’t get is, its always going according to plan at GM, yet there is always an excuse !!
Good luck GM !!
I’ve driven a 2019 enough to know that the 8-speed in it is great. Interior looks fine to me. The 2019 Silverado 1500’s front end looks great so I don’t see your point there. It looks 10 times better than the 16-18 Silverado’s frumpy design or the hideous new Ram. I don’t know what you mean by “no GM customer support”. Of the hand full of GM vehicles I’ve owned over the years, GM has always taken care of me. They fixed the leaky radiator on my 2014 Silverado and gave me a free loaner while they did the work. They fixed any recall I had very quickly. Faaar better than the experience my brother has had with his lemon 2019 Ram Limited. What an electrical disaster that piece is.
I am very happy for you Neil B,
You having a good experience with the 8 speed ( so far ) and having good GM customer support is how the GM ownership experience should be !!
Also I feel design is in the eye of the beholder and we usually find out sooner than later if it is a success, and the high number of new RAM purchases should already have proven this !
As far as the recalls, and numerous troubles listed that you say your brother has had, and the troubles you say you have had with your own 2014 Silverado, what is the difference ?
You have listed you personally have had a radiator fixed and recall work done on your own 2014 GM vehicle, but think it is horrible your brother is going through the same thing with his RAM, again what is the difference ?
I just state my opinion like everyone else, and it is my opinion that the lawsuits ( plural ) against GM on numerous troubles is a LACK of customer service issue. If every GM owner had the same experience as you there would be no need for a lawsuit, and I personally have had the horrible GM customer experience, rather than the good one, and it is the ONLY reason for commenting on GM sites !
So the world keeps spinning and we will see the results in about 2 to 2-1/2 years after GM admits it should have done something different. Because in my opinion it is the time GM waits to admit they have an issue is the issue. GM can do a ” quick ” fix in around 2-1/2 years but if like the 8 speed it takes 5 years to admit you have a problem than its 7-1/2 years to the fix !
GM is showing some signs of making decisions quicker, The offering of the 10 speed behind the 5.3 in the truck is an example, as well at the 6.2 – 10 speed in the cheaper truck, but that might be linked to just looks, the cheaper model Silverado look is preferred and getting the drivetrain in the truck you like the looks of is important to some people.
Anyway keep up the good work of commenting, I like to hear other peoples experiences.
I put a hundred miles on a 2019 5.3 8 speed and it’s complete shit. I don’t love the 6 speed in my 2018 but it’s a lot better than the 2019 was.
Mix in a far worse ride and interior and you’ll see why half ton sales continue to drop.
Colorado and Malibu decrease. Not a good thing. Need to inure out what’s wrong and fix it. Especially the Colorado wit increase competition.
June: 68k RAM, 180k Q2. GM says no, but sure it’s afraid. It seems Gladiator is starting to take Colorado’s party too.
Good news: Tahoe, Suburban, Equinox, Acadia.
Bad news: CT6, Colorado, Malibu.
To be honest, just look at the rest of FCA it’s quite said seeing the majority of their brands seeing double digit declines and it’s not just this year either.
Be great to see GM knock Ford off the light duty truck throne. Perhaps Ford would get into gear and bring out something new. Ford has some sprucing up to do….
sales are down due to GM is NOT having the sedan models that some buyers are still in the market for ( SOME BUYERS STILL ARE LOOKING FOR SEDANS ) although lesser amount . we are a 2 car family 1 sedan and 1 suv I do not want 2 suv’s ,I was looking to purchase 2020 Lacrosse ( you took that way) , or a Impala ( you took that away) American made Regal ( made in Poland) , never mind Pontiac or Oldsmobile ,, there still import sedans available and once that happens GM will not see that buyer again
I agree. It’s interesting how over at FCA, sales of the Dodge Charger increased because there are even less options for American made midsize sedans now that GM and Ford whimper out…
If the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer upstages the new Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade like the Ram did the Silverado/Sierra, GM will need to look for a new CEO. All this lack of passion and questionable business decisions seem to be pointing towards Mary wanting GM to be like Toyota; building “safe” but boring vehicles that are either hybrid of full EV.
I think that GM needed to look for a new CEO like yesterday. Machete Mary is just a 2010 female version of Roger Smith.
Clean house at the top. Get rid of Barra or make her pay based on sales.
Because sales are down 1.5%? Look at the sales at other companies and you’ll note that they’re doing pretty well in comparison.
Ford Q2 U.S. sales drops 4.1 pct to 650,336 Units U.S. GM Sales Decrease 1.5 Percent To 746,659 Units
No more crappy vehicles, just basically mediocre!
Hmmmmm that is a outstanding idea
It honestly boggles my mind sometimes what GM is choosing to do.
I’m sure they lost quite a bit of sales due to the Cruz and Volt. I’m still trying to figure out why they cut it.
My second point is this…..I’m honestly surprised with the Cadillac sales. The XTS is the Sedan sales leader, and they are choosing to discontinue it. I have seen many, many refreshed XTS’s on the road, but I only saw my first refreshed CT6 3 days ago. it looks nice in person, and both cars are great, I just find it stupid that GM is discontinuing the one that is doing better (or even both).
Its the money on the hood, Henry.
When GM puts money on the hood and gets their blah average product priced in line with the value, they sell !
XTS is supposed to be the last ever FWD Cadillac sedan, and the money on the hood, bam gone !
The older Cadillac drivers just bought their last Cadillac !!
However if GM can make money I bet they will import the XTS from China in the future !
Looking forward to the day that garbage motors goes under for good, its not a matter of if but when. Once the brand loyal old people that like to drive land yachts either die off or finally realize what garbage GM is they’re done. Cant wait!!
