The GM Authority Take
Cadillac XT5 sales in Q4 2018 underlines just how badly the crossover needs a refresh, which is expected for the 2020 model year and leaked earlier this month. The current model is a good vehicle, but has fallen behind the competition in terms of exterior styling and trim level packaging/configuration. Notably, rivals offerings are offering more aggressive trim elements, including the ability to have “luxury” or “sport” styling on their models. The 2020 refresh should address these matters by implementing Cadillac’s Y trim level strategy, which results in Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport trims.
In addition, it could also be possible that the new Cadillac XT4 has cannibalized some sales from the XT5. In the fourth quarter, Cadillac XT4 sales totaled 7,752 units.

The Cadillac XT5 is a premium luxury crossover that replaced the Cadillac SRX in the Cadillac range. The XT5 slots between the compact Cadillac XT4 and upcoming three-row Cadillac XT6 in the Cadillac lineup. Currently in its first generation, the XT5 was introduced for the 2017 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Acadia and upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer. A longer-wheelbase variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. For the 2018 model year, the XT5 received several new exterior colors, a new "base" trim level that offers all-wheel-drive, the Rear Seat Reminder technology, and various new accessories. For the 2019 model year, the XT5 deletes four existing exterior colors to make room for four new ones, while making a couple package-level changes: the Driver Awareness Package becomes standard on the Luxury model while the Driver Assist Package becomes standard on the Platinum model. Two sets of 20-inch wheels become available. In addition, the 2019 XT5 receives a new, second-generation wireless smartphone charging system that is higher power is now compatible with Apple iPhones. Finally, Provence leather replaces micro-suede on the mid-panel of the instrument panel. The 2020 model year will deliver a mid cycle update that includes revised trim level structure (adopting the Cadillac Y trim level strategy), slight revisions to the exterior design, a few small updates to the interior, and the introduction of a 9-speed automatic transmission in place of the 8-speed unit on the 2017-2019 models. The XT5 is produced across the following GM plants globally:

Have there been any bright spots for GM lately? All I seem to read is that this model or that model is down X%…all the while they are “drastically restructuring” to EVs, but not a single model in sight (not even a blurry spy pic). I’m no automotive industry analyst, but it sure is weird.
Full steam ahead in China though.
GM has just totally left the US CUSTOMER on the curb.
And not just overnight. The GM customer experience in the year 2019 is, You buy a vehicle from us ” Thank you ” if you need any further assistance talk to a dealer its NOT our responsibility. Thanks again for buying from GM.
PEROID——DONE
Can’t wait to hear the excuses:
Lets see first will be —–we are in a downturn market
All automakers treat the CUSTOMER the same way
Its just the XT4 sales are eating away at the XT5
No one wants the old model their all waiting for the refresh version.
No its the XT6 their all waiting for the XT6.
I would love to see a chart of Cadillac SUV sales total, Then when all the new great ones are out like now, did the total Cadillac SUV sales go up be any significant amount or are the same X Cadillac people just moving around, because so far there is nothing new here. Just the same old Chevrolet GM-Cadillac.
Just throwing this out there, maybe if you want NEW CUSTOMERS you should have NEW things. Different headlights, grill, and taillights does NOT make a Cadillac a Cadillac. Its just a Chevrolet with different headlights, grill, and taillights.
XT5 sales dropped primarily due to the production ramp up of XT4
But the CMO just projected a double-digit sales increase in 2019 … ?
In the meantime, stand by for great offers on xt5s for well-qualified buyers.
That’s because someone, somewhere, somehow, convinced her and others there was an onslaught of NEW Cadillacs coming for her to sale and market.
But the truth is there is an onslaught of new GM vehicles coming just not Cadillacs.
We get a larger Equinox with new headlights, grill, and taillights—-XT4
We get a larger Acadia with new headlights, grill, and taillights—–XT6
We get a smaller Acadia with new headlights, grill and taillights—–XT5
And soon to come:
We get a larger ATS with new headlights, grill, and taillights——CT5
We get the same ATS with new headlights, grill, and taillights—–CT4
We get a Suburban with new headlights, grill, and taillights——–Escalade
That’s SIX folks.
“O” wait the CT6, The only NEW Cadillac ( is it dead, is it not dead) —–NOT like any GM vehicle——Great interior content—–Great drivetrain “platform”——And now finally a Cadillac V8——Load this up with the best of GM options STANDARD, Standard 3.0TT, V8 option, And you got yourself a CADILLAC. SELL IT, PUSH IT, GIVE IT AWAY if you have to for 2-5 years and you will have so many Cadillacs on the road you won’t be able to make enough. (ok that might be a stretch I was dreaming again)
But in the USA, we are not going to spend 20% more for a Chevrolet just because you told us it was a Cadillac.
The average Chevrolet owner might not know or care if a Cadillac is a Cadillac. But a Cadillac owner knows if a Cadillac is a Chevrolet or a Cadillac.
And again I sure hope I’m wrong and GM just sells the s**t out of these NEW Chevrolets, I mean Cadillacs !!
I agree with you so much!
Now this article saying third place? Please, no one cars about quarter sales.
For 2018 the XT5 was down and in 5th place. The justification in this article is silly.
RX, GLE, Q5, X3, XT5 for 2018 followed by the others.
Where’s the v-sport? Hybrid? Supercruise? No excitement around the model.
The Engineer for this car should be fired!!! The design is outdated..It looks nothing like a Cadillac should. Its Its smaller then the SRX, nothing like Caddy style..Its basically a joke!! Cmon Cadillac lets make a Cadillac not a Nissan..JEEZ
I’m surprised the X5 price class as a group is way down for the year. I thought the economy is booming.
Those employed part-time are counted as full time workers—plus many are under employed–in jobs they don’t want that don’t pay well—main street not as robust with cash as the headlines would have you believe—luxury buyers pool not as large as one thinks.
Alex, can we get an article for the XT4 sales numbers? I’m interested to see how it faired against the competition. Too bad GM doesn’t do monthly sales reports anymore
While I was primarily a Buick owner, my last two vehicles were Cadillacs. I have most recently owned two Cadillacs, a2003 CTS (a magnificent machine) and then, later, a 2012 SRX, which I believe to be one of the most stylish Cadillac models. But now it is, once again, time to trade. And, given the structural similarities between the XT5 and the GMC
Acadia Denali equally equipped, I am obligated to really consider the Acadia and save a couple of thousands of dollars of nothing more than “Prestige” money.
WHY?
