Chevrolet Multi-Flex Mid-Gate

The Chevrolet Multi-Flex Mid-Gate is a storage feature that allows users to open the “Mid-Gate” to extend the pickup truck’s cargo area into the cabin, thereby enabling the vehicle to carry longer items. The feature made its debut on the Chevrolet Silverado EV.

Similar in design to the Mid-Gate found in the Chevrolet Avalanche, the Multi-Flex Mid-Gate is capable of expanding the length of the Silverado EV‘s bed from five-foot, 11-inches to just over nine feet of total storage by way of three folding options.

Positions

Position 1: 60 Percent

In order to fold the 60 percent section down while keeping the rear glass in place, owners must move the front seats forward so that the rear seat cushions can clear the front seats. From there, the rear seatbelts are temporarily fitted into their slots to move out of the way of the rear bench. Next, the 60 percent section rear cushions are folded forward, while the rear seat backs quickly follow suit. Finally, a button on the bottom of the Mid-Gate is pressed for two seconds, and the 60 percent section of the Mid-Gate will fold down. This configuration allows for longer items yet retains a rear seat for an extra occupant.

Position 2: 100 percent (60 + 40)

In order to fold both rear sections of the Mid-Gate down, the order of operations is largely the same as described above, albeit a button at the bottom of the 40 percent section of the Mid-Gate must also be held down for two seconds. However, while this configuration is designed for wide and flat items, the Silverado EV will only be able to transport two occupants in the front seats, as the rear seats have been completely folded away.

Position 3: Entire Mid-Gate & Glass

For items that may be too tall for the two configurations listed above, owners also have the option of removing the rear crossbar and rear glass to create a cavernous cargo area. In order to do this, it’s necessary to start at the point where the rear seat cushions and seat backs are folded down but the Mid-Gate remains untouched. From there, the rear window defroster is turned off and the rear glass is popped out of its frame and placed onto the front-most part of the Mid-Gate. Finally, a release switch is hit and the entire assembly folds down, revealing the enormous cargo area.

Position 4: Rear Glass Only

One could also remove only the rear glass and stow it in the appropriate area, while keeping the entire mid-gate upright. This could be considered the fourth configuration.

Availability

The Multi-Flex Mid-Gate feature is available on all retail-focused variants of the Chevrolet Silverado EV. As such, some models – like the fleet Work Truck (WT) trim – does not offer the feature.

Mid-Gate vs. Tailgate

The Multi-Flex Mid-Gate is a different feature from the Multi-Flex tailgate.

GMC Version

The Chevrolet StowFlex tailgate is analogous to the GMC MultiPro Mid-Gate offered on the Silverado EV’s corporate sibling, the GMC Sierra EV.
