Some 2024 Chevy Silverado HD Units Will Need A Transmission Replacement

General Motors has released a Safety Recall for certain units of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD pickup that were produced with a transmission direct overdrive carrier built with an incorrect caged piston bearing. The recall calls for a replacement of the entire transmission and several adjacent components. The program is in effect until October 31st, 2026.

The issue affects both Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission builds (RPO MGM with the L5P engine and RPO MKM with the L8T engine). It doesn’t affect units equipped with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic (RPO MGU) with integrated Power Take-Off (PTO).

The problem: 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks that are affected by this issue have a transmission direct overdrive carrier built with an incorrect caged piston bearing.

The hazards: affected trucks could experience transmission failure, gear slippage, excessive vibration and noise, increased friction and heat, and a risk of complete lockup of the transmission.

The fix: certified GM service technicians are instructed to replace the transmission and transfer all components as necessary. The fix should take about 7.4 hours to complete.

Affected components: transmission, transmission fluid, transmission fluid cooler pipe seal and fitting, exhaust system seals, transmission mount and bolts, front axle drive shaft slip yoke boot clamps and retainers.

Number of affected vehicles: it’s unclear at this time how many 2024 Chevy Silverado HD units are affected by the issue.

  2. No wonder the trucks are so expensive- each one needs two transmissions. Well at least there’s no problems with their engines.

  3. I suspect that Allison Transmission is sorry that they ever participated in this “Allison branded” scheme. The transmissions were not designed by Allison, nor are they manufactured by Allison. There have been several issues with these transmissions.

    1. My 2018 L5P suffered a cracked rear engine cover at 60k, truck was babied and had only towed a 9,000 lb camper about 2,000 miles.

    2. For what this program will likely cost, GM could’ve put real Allisons in everything the first time.

The bean counters (and marketers) need to step aside and let the folks who know what they’re doing, do their jobs. You cannot compromise with the cost of today’s trucks.

  4. Here we go, sure the fake Allison transmissions are just as good as the real ones.

  5. It is unreal how these auto manufactures are recalling more vehicles than there are good ones remaining on the roads. I’ve ran the 6 speeds in 3 different HD’s for over 300k WITHOUT any issues. I traded my ’22 for my ’24 mainly because of the so-called “Allison 10-speed” This P*sses me off! I’M DONE buying new JUNK!

  7. The recall doesn’t do any good if they don’t have the parts to replace. My 23 serria 2500hd has been sitting at the dealer for over 2 months waiting on a valve body. With no eta on the part. Not happy.

    1. Same!! Bought a brand-new truck for my company and it’s been sitting for over a month now. GM is absolutely no help at all and states the part is not delayed, even though there is no ETA at all. Been losing crazy money not being able to service my plow customers.

  8. The only reason I went with a Chevy was for the Allison transmission. Now Ram trucks might look pretty good

  9. I’m not sure what trans I have in my 24 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss but it took a $hit at 3700 miles. Needless to say, I’m Pissed. Don’t know when I’ll get it back and can’t get an answer on a loaner. All while making payments. 🤬
