The Chevrolet Silverado HD is a full-sized, heavy-duty pickup truck that entered production for the 2000 model year. It is mechanically identical to the GMC Sierra HD, and is currently offered in 2500HD and 3500HD forms.
To clarify, Chevy Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models are not heavy-duty variants, but are in fact medium-duty variants (see Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty).

The naming structure was a bit different back when the Chevy Silverado HD (heavy-duty) variants entered the market for 2000 model year, as an entry-level 1500HD model slotted below the 2500HD and 3500HD models. At the time, the base Silverado HD powertrain was a Vortec 6.0-liter V8, which put out 300 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque and was paired with a Hydra-Matic 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission.
The first-gen Silverado HD rode upon the GMT880 platform, and would live on through the 2007 model year. It featured various 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 engines – including the LB7, LLY, and LBZ – as well as the largest Vortec engine to ever enter production: the 8.1-liter L18. Manual transmissions were also available for certain configurations, including a NV4500 five-speed and a ZF S6-650 six-speed, with the latter being reserved for models equipped with Duramax engines.
Maximum towing capacities for each of the Chevrolet Silverado HD models were very competitive back then as they are today:
- 1500HD – 10,300 pounds (4,700 kg)
- Payload – 3,129 pound (1,419 kg)
- 2500HD – 16,100 pounds (7,300 kg) w/ 8.1L V8 gas engine and 3.73:1 rear
- Payload – 3,964 pounds (1,798 kg)
- 3500HD – 16,700 pounds (7,600 kg)
- Payload – 5,753 pounds (2,610 kg)
Notably, the Silverado HD was not available in a crew cab body configuration until 2001. For 1999 and 2000, buyers who wanted a heavy-duty pickup truck with a crew cab had to opt for a C/K series truck rather than a Silverado.

For the fourth-generation, the Silverado HD moved to the T1 platform and welcomed an entirely new and bold exterior design along with a roomier interior, more capable hardware and the latest, class-leading technologies. For starters, the current-gen Silverado HD is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor with a wheelbase that’s been stretched 5.2 inches on Crew Cab models and is scaled for HD customers. For its initial model year, the 2020 Silverado HD was available in five distinct trim levels – Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country – which were available across 22 cab, bed, chassis and driveline configurations. The same configurations are available for the 2022 Silverado HD as well.
Under the hood, the standard engine size grew to 6.6-liters –Â meaning the displacement of the gasoline engine matched that of the diesel engine – and it yielded an output of 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque compared to the 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque produced by the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel. The diesel was coupled with an all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
The new hardware enabled a max towing capacity of 35,500 pounds, which was an enormous 52 percent improvement over the third-gen Silverado HD model.
