Here May Be Why Your 2024 GMC Canyon Has a Dead Battery

If you’ve ever run into an inexplicably dead battery in your third-generation GMC Canyon, you’re not alone. As GM Authority has covered on several occasions previously, GM has identified a recurring issue that stems from its Over the Air (OTA) update system, which can sometimes cause the battery to drain, leading to a no-crank condition. This issue is also present in the third-generation Chevy Colorado, and now, General Motors has officially addressed the issue for the 2024 GMC Canyon in a new service bulletin (#PIT6232).

The 2024 GMC Canyon may drain its battery after an OTA update.

The problem can occur after an OTA update fails to complete installation, and can result in the battery completely draining, thus leading to a no-crank condition. Additionally, the issue can manifest with the radio remaining on for up to 11 minutes after the Retained Accessory Power is canceled. These issues may be present in any unit of the 2024 GMC Canyon, including all trims and configurations. Fortunately, there are steps GM recommends dealers take to resolve the issue.

For the fix, GM recommends that a certified technician first verifies if an OTA update is available by checking the “Vehicle Updates” menu in the vehicle’s settings. The technician should also ensure the battery has at least 70-percent charge before starting the update, and that the vehicle is located in a spot with a strong cellular connection. If the update fails to install, or if suddenly there’s no OTA update available, technicians are advised to reprogram the K56 Serial Data Gateway module. Even after the update is completed, the system may continue to show an update notification for multiple ignition cycles, depending on the owner’s driving habits.

Additionally, GM has instructed technicians to check for any excessive parasitic battery draw from the radio. If detected, further steps from bulletin #24-NA-136 should be taken.

As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Canyon cradles the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, while the truck rides on the updated GMT 31XX platform under the skin. Production takes place exclusively at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

  1. After learning about all the tech issues on the Canyon and Colorado I’m glad i canceled my order! I hope they get these things corrected . I really like the Canyon but all the tech issues are keeping me from buying!

    1. I have a 24 Canyon Denali and absolutely love truck and haven’t had a single issue with it. Remember, it’s the dissatisfied customer that tends to make the most noise. Imagine how many of us love our trucks.

  2. My ZR2, I exit the truck, radio stays on.. That’s a crack code group who can send out updates WITHOUT testing, testing, testing….. Grrrr!! Other than that, ” I love it!”

  3. I found 2 things when I had this issue.
    1) If you charge the battery, use the ground post, not the terminal on the battery. There’s a state of charge sensor in the terminal. Fully charge the battery at 2 amps for however long it takes.
    2) Connect to Wi-Fi if it’s available.

My OTA update completed that night after I fought with it for a week.

    1. I had trouble installing the update twice. I connected to my home Wifi and it isntalled. Otherwise love my truck and haven’t had a single issue with it. I’d guess most of the issues are a small percentage of the trucks sold overall. Like with anything else the dissatisfied, rightly so, make the most noise.

  5. Just think it’s going to keep getting worse. With the recently passed infrastructure bill the 2026’s are also going to have to incorporate kill switches, AI is going to be heavily implemented targeting inside your car to see if your on your phone or toking and driving, traffic sign recognition will be commonplace and vehicles will communicate with each other. My 2019 and former 2017 Impala’s shared an issue where the infotainment screen wouldn’t always load up and stayed blank or only partially booted up and the fix from the dealer was to disconnect the battery terminal for 15 minutes. Well that worked for a while but the issue eventually returned. Cars will truly be throw away junk when the warranty expires and this crap can’t be fixed or updated.
