Back in July 2023, GM Authority reported that many owners found their 2023 GMC Canyon models spontaneously discharging their batteries after receiving an over-the-air (OTA) update. Now, General Motors has issued a Service Update designed to fix this inconvenience.
Service Update N232411313 is intended for 2023 Canyon units that may have experienced a low or discharged battery after accepting an OTA update. To remedy this, certified GM technicians are to inspect affected vehicles and reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Serial Data Gateway Module as necessary.
It’s worth noting that it should take techs a little more than an hour to perform this fix.
As background, the root cause behind this issue was believed to be a failed software update that leaves the infotainment system running, thus draining the battery until it’s dead. In fact, one person claimed online that the radio gets accidentally locked in recovery mode, and that turning off both the “download updates in the background” and “download updates via Wi-Fi when available” options will help prevent an OTA update and thus save the pickup’s battery.
As a reminder, the 2023 GMC Canyon is offered with just a single powertrain, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the top-rated 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque tune. This is a notable difference from the 2023 Colorado, which could also be had with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, or the same 2.7L L3B engine in a lower-rated 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque tune.
For a majority of trim levels, 4WD is equipped as standard, while the updated variant of GM’s eight-speed automatic serves as the sole transmission option.
In regard to structure, the third-generation Canyon rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
