The third-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon made their formal introduction for the 2023 model year, debuting a long list of changes and updates. Unfortunately, some third-gen Colorado and Canyon owners report that their pickup’s windshield base cowl trim is popped loose when opening the hood. Now, GM is offering replacement pieces for the trim.
According to owners, the windshield base cowl trim on the third-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon will bend or pop loose after lifting the hood as a result of the hood support arms pressing up against the plastic cowl end trims. However, the new GM replacement parts appear to fix the issue.
Vehicle owner Mark Ramos shared before and after images showing the difference that the new windshield base cowl trim makes when opening the pickup’s hood. The new piece clearly provides greater clearance, allowing the hood to be fully opened without bending or otherwise impacting the cowl trim.
According to Ramos, the new part numbers are 85670001 and 85670002. The pieces were replaced at the dealer under warranty.
GM Authority reached out to General Motors in mid-March inquiring about details for the replacement windshield base cowl trim. However, GM has yet to provide a response.
As a reminder, the third-generation Chevy Colorado offers three engine options, including the entry-level Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the mid-range Turbo Plus 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, and the Turbo High-Output 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The mid-range Turbo Plus 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine was deleted for the 2024 model year.
Meanwhile, the third-gen GMC Canyon is only available with the Turbo High-Output 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, once again rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
Both pickups ride on the updated 31XX-2 platform, with production taking place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

The photo is not an accurate representation of the “fix”. On mine and every other truck the problem is on the passenger side cowl. I replaced the clip with a metal one and left the drivers side alone. The photo shows the problem on the passenger side (which is correct), but the fix is shown on the drivers side.
Also at least with my truck, the rubber seal that is connected to the cowl barley overlays on the windshield. In some areas less than 1/8″ coverage. What are they doing to address that?
Did you take it to the dealer and show the issue to them?
Yes, took it in for the recall on the forward crash detection, which they didn’t have a fix for yet. They reprogrammed my injectors and I pointed out the gaps in the trim. Fixed the trim the following week. Btw, I’m getting about 2mpg better gas mileage with the injector update.
I had gap on passenger side and gap along bottom center. New piece fixes all.
ya mine does that too especially on the passenger side.
Should have been replacing the blown $20k Duramax engines in the Colorado and Canyons, and the $6k high pressure fuel pumps.
Took mine in for forward crash alert recall and while there told them auto stop wasn’t working after a hole day they come up with low battery, put it on charger over night and it worked. So in conversation why battery was loosing its charge, they said I don’t drink it enough, about 300 miles a month at this time and I said throw key fab in cup holder and it might set for a week or longer. That was the problem nothing in manual says don’t leave key fab in vehicle because computer well not shut down with keyless push stop button. Guess fab wakes computer up when your close to vehicle
@Bob… well than, you need to “Drink” more.
The pictures should be of the same side. Not left and right.
That’s professional grade, I’m surprised they revised the part, usually they keep making the same part and never actually fixing the problem, because after 36k it’s your problem
My 2023 Canyon has been in into service seven times so far for all different issues most often the info system has been replaced and reimaged three times. but now the dealership cannot figure out why the phone charger does not work. It only comes up with an orange triangle every time you put the phone on the charger. The side mirror indicates a vehicle is coming up and there are no vehicles coming.
My June built AT4 has the same issue, so GM hasn’t done anything…… just notching the trim would fix it and it wouldn’t be seen with hood closed…stupid and it’s my second ‘24 Canyon. My first (May) was a buyback. Flickering headlights are another issue without any possible fix…
I sent GM a final repair notice for this cowl issue not being fixed after 6 dealer trips and two repair attempts. They set up a final repair date and then cancelled it. I have an arbitration hearing in 2 weeks. Sounds like GM is trying to claim this is not a warranty issue per the BBB. NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE? I should have refused the vehicle when it was delivered with undisclosed hail damage . Total slime balls! They give you a discount for being a veteran and then screw you.
