Last week, we briefly examined the apparent dearth of crossover coupes in the Cadillac lineup, notable given the popularity of the body style among rival automakers, especially German makes like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. As we covered last week, the closest thing Cadillac has to a crossover coupe would be the Cadillac GT4, a Chinese-exclusive model with a low-roof silhouette. However, while one could argue the Cadillac GT4 isn’t a “true” crossover coupe, it does effectively split Cadillac’s crossover lineup into two distinct lines.
The Cadillac GT4 is an interesting product that’s often misunderstood. The crossover is essentially the Cadillac XT4 under the skin, but with a restyled body on top. The new body incorporates a low-roof silhouette that gives it a distinct look similar crossover coupe models on offer from the German automakers, but without going “full coupe” like the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, or Audi Q8.
“Cadillac didn’t follow the Germans in making crossover coupes of its core crossover SUVs,” says GM Authority Executive Editor, Alex Luft. “Instead, the storied luxury marque seems to have elected a different path, one that still involves making a sexier design from the same general architecture as another core vehicle, but one that can’t really be described as a crossover coupe.”
Which begs the question – what is the Cadillac GT4? Essentially, it’s a XT4 in a sleeker, more-youthful wrapper. The GT4 is also notable for being the first Cadillac to wear the GT# nomenclature.
It’s unclear at this point if further Cadillac models will receive the same GT-style treatment as the GT4. But we want to know, dear reader – would you like to see Cadillac add more GT-style models to its lineup? Yes, nothing says sexy design like the crossover segment aimed at 70 year old women.
John wait it’s missing off road tires, skyjacker shocks…(sniff slurp), a big hoken V8, red tow hooks, a brush bar, a flag flying in the bed, exhaust stakes in the bed or out the sides…(grumble sip) and the guy driving it must show off his beared with Walmart sunglasses! Sure thing the Cadillac I’ve always wanted this looks like a nice little vehicle to commute to work in I like the looks.
Again, just like the Chevy Corvette SUV, I’ll believe it when I see it. Sure it’s fun to conjure up the idea but I’m not seeing a huge difference between an XT4 or GT4, except maybe lost space in the back with lower chassis and sportier looks. Perhaps, a better center of gravity and hopefully improved fuel economy would certainly entice baby boomers. Bigger motor, sportier handling and trick dash like the CT5 V, and I’m sold? Compete with the Porshe Cayenne then please, take my preorder. I’m waiting GM. Speed Racer out. LOL
Bring the cornering lamps back to the XT4 PLEASE
If Cadillac decides on a GT4 model, then they need to put some extra energy under the hood
I think this a really good-looking car/SUV/CUV. It a little small for me, but it looks great particularly in red as shown above. Cadillac should bring to the US as n XT4 replacement.
Please do not import another Chinese Cadillac. Buick is not having much success selling Chinese cars. I will keep my CTS before buying a foreign Cadillac.
Kenny, please name the current Cadillac currently imported from China. (After all, you say we can’t have “another Chinese Cadilac.”) And I think Buick dealers may differ on the importance of the Envision to the Buick line! It actually gives GM something to compete in the modern premium, mid-size (probably “compact” by EPA definition – but 2-row, 5 passenger) CUV/SUV segment. The XT5 is far too archaic to compete. But yes, the China build and the turbocharged 4-cyl are the main things tamping down my interest in the Envision and would steer me actually to the XT5 with a V-6. Because I would buy it and hold it. But the typical upscale serial leaser could care less about that. They want fresh features and styling.
The CT6 plug in hybrid was imported from China, but not currently available in the US.
Kenny not having Success!? I see more Buick envision’s then I have seen something smaller then then the enclave but bigger then the Encore in years. Bring in over Cadillac!
Well, it is not being marketed to 70 year old women in China. It is being market to 30’s to 50’s professionals (although the Chinese economy is crumbling – how many of those will still have a job to be able to buy a GT4 remains to be seen). I think the writer nailed – XT4 with a sexier, sportier look. I like it. Now if they could do something with XT4 engine to make it worth of a GT4 badge, now we have something. I think GM may be soon forced to export them to the US because of the rapid disintegration of the Chinese economy. We may get the XT4 here – which I hope we do – just to keep the production lines going
These coupe utility vehicles are not my thing (I just don’t see the sense when their is the more practical full SUV version) but this GT4 is striking and could potentially lower the average age for Cadillac owners.
This is so crude looking- is it a rebadged Chevy Traverse from 10 years ago???
Cadillac is lost.
The more Cadillac keeps re-designing these things the more they look like station wagons! Hey that’s fine by me!! Just give them some power…
I prefer the existing XT4 to this. The GT4 isn’t bad persay. But the D pillar just gives me Blazer vibes…feels like it cheapens the Cadillac brand.
The writer keeps talking about coupes which typically refer to a two door vehicle in America except for the Euro brands:
coupe1
/koÍžop/

1.
a car with a fixed roof, two doors, and a sloping rear.
2.
HISTORICAL
a four-wheeled enclosed carriage for two passengers and a driver.
China is an enemy nation politically, which is the part of a nation that stacks up dead bodies like cord wood. I would rather buy a restored Eldorado than any of this Chines/electric/crap.
