Seriously affected by the severe economic crisis that the South American country is going through, General Motors has yet to restart production at the GM Alvear plant in Argentina – which has not produced any units so far in calendar year 2024.
The GM Alvear plant in Argentina has not been able to start production due to a lack of imported components and has been closed since Friday, December 29th, the last working day of 2023 when the complex’s workers went on early vacation. Although it was supposed to restart operations at the end of January, the car manufacturer could not resume production due to the debt that the company and auto parts manufacturers maintain with foreign suppliers.
After long weeks of labor uncertainty and several failed attempts to resume activities in the complex in the local province of Santa Fe, the automaker’s Argentine subsidiary announced that it finally reached an agreement with its suppliers affected by debt and that it will resume production activities at the GM Alvear plant on Monday, March 4th.
“General Motors informs that, after an agreement with its suppliers affected by payments abroad, it will resume production at its Alvear plant next Monday, March 4th,” said the communications department of GM Argentina in an official press release.
Notably, the GM Alvear plant will complete two full months without production and this becomes the longest period of inactivity that the complex has suffered due to multiple economic problems that have prevented it from operating normally. In fact, GM has suffered constant production interruptions at the Alvear factory since the last quarter of 2023 – with stoppages of several weeks in the months of October and December.
GM hopes to resume production at the GM Alvear plant early next month, although it is not yet clear what the assembly rate or production shifts will be. Starting this year, the complex will exclusively produce auxiliary units of the Chevy Tracker – whose main regional production center is the GM São Caetano do Sul plant in Brazil, due to the end of production of the Chevy Cruze in Argentina at the end of 2023.
