Since the beginning of the 2023 calendar year, inventory levels across the automotive industry have been rising to the point where some automakers have begun slowing down production or boosting incentives. Now, it appears as though inventory levels of GMC were reasonably strong as of November 2023.
According to a report from Cox Automotive, GMC inventory levels stood at 73 days supply in November 2023. This means that at the current sales pace, there is currently enough inventory on dealership lots to last for 73 days. For reference, a 60 days supply figure is considered optimal across the industry. In comparison to the rest of General Motors’ U.S.-market brands, Cadillac, Chevy, and Buick stood at 61, 71, and 106 days of supply, respectively, while GMC was slightly above the industry average of 71 days.
It’s worth noting that these figures are related to the U.S. market.
This is an intriguing development considering the widespread impact the 2023 UAW strike had across the automotive industry, particularly on the Big Three. Despite the strike lasting almost two months and affecting several GM plants across the United States that produce Big Red vehicles – including the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, the GM Arlington plant in Texas to name a few – GMC dealerships currently have no problem filling customer orders for vehicles due to the excess inventory.
With all that in mind, General Motors is taking steps to reign in the surplus stockpile across all its U.S. market brands. As GM Authority has been extensively covering, after the holiday break, The General has scheduled an extra week of downtime at the Fort Wayne plant in Indiana where the GMC Sierra is built, as well as downtime at the Factory Zero plant in Michigan where the GMC Hummer EV is manufactured, for maintenance. While the intention may not be entirely focused on reducing supply, decreased production output will have an indirect consequence to help lower supply figures in the coming future.

Joe and his policy on economics has made interest rates to high for a lot of potential car buyers.
Sooo …. customers can’t get an “Ordered Vehicle” because of the Strike and backed-up orders.
But they’re shutting assembly plants for a week or 2 because inventory is too high and sales are slowing.

GM is causing some of their own problems here also. I bought a 2023 Silverado High Country, it’s a beautiful truck, but the Google Built-in feature is too intrusive for my liking.
I WAS NOT told at the time of purchase that I needed a Google account to use the Google Built-in feature. I also wasn’t told that the Navigation system won’t work without said Google account.
I choose not to share my personal life with GM, Google and the Chinese Government, so I am not able to use the Navigation system in my new $70,000 truck.
My 2018 GMC Denali had Navigation that worked just fine and could be used without signing away your privacy to anyone and everyone who GM chooses to sell it too.
