2024 Chevy Traverse: Do You Like The ‘Shark Fin’ C-Pillar?

The 2024 Chevy Traverse introduces a brand-new third generation for the crossover, debuting a wealth of updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model year. Among these updates is an overhauled exterior that presents a new look and a more truck-like attitude. Interestingly, the profile of the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse shows off a “shark fin” style C-pillar. The question is – does this new styling element even look any good?

The side view of the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse made its formal introduction this July, which means the collective public has had plenty of time to let the new looks sink in. The shark fin C-pillar is particularly interesting.

The C-pillar incorporates a rising body section just behind the middle windows, elevating the window line at a dramatic angle. However, the pillar stop just below the roof line (at least stylistically speaking) and flows rearwards at a horizontal angle, then falls back down towards the original window line before settling at a slightly elevated point to flow rearwards into the hatch.

Because it stops short of connecting with the roofline, the C-pillar creates a sort of “floating roof” design wherein the top window line wraps around the rear of the vehicle in an unbroken fashion. In addition, the shape of the C-pillar seems to enhance the rear haunches of the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse, giving it a taller, tougher look overall.

This tougher attitude bit would certainly fall in line with the rest of the vehicle’s styling, especially the front fascia, which looks to incorporate similar high-mounted lighting elements and a large, rectangular grille section, vaguely similar to the styling of models like the Chevy Silverado and Chevy Colorado. Add in further styling enhancements for trims like the new Z71, and the look is definitely more rugged than that of the previous generation.

But what do you think, dear reader? Do you like the shark fin C-Pillar on the 2024 Chevy Traverse? Tell us by voting in the poll below, and remember to subscribe to GM Authority for more Chevy Traverse news, Chevy news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

  1. It’s not the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen, but it is distinctive and that’s what Chevy was going for. At least it’s not obnoxious, like certain Korean brands that try to stand out and go too far.

  2. It is ok, It reminds me of a Corvette “C” pillar.

    1. The shark fin c-pillar is now cliche as many CUV/SUVs are already doing it. I miss when GM created design trends instead of following them.

    1. To me it looks odd and out of place ! Would look alot better if it was extended up to the roof ! I would make a plastic filler cover and color match it ! but thats just me !

    2. A more clean look for the 2026/2027 Model, other than that, seeing one of these in all Black would minimize the disturbance of that pillar design, overall Chevy did a good job with the entire look of the vehicle.

  4. I really kinda love the whole thing. I think it looks great, especially in Z71 form.

  5. I don’t like it. I think it detracts from the appearance. Chevy should have asked this question before they built it.

  6. The C-pillar cut line adds a well deserved style line which does enhances the roof’s length. Chevy needed some extra zip on the Traverse’s side profile. Also like the new rear lights design‼️🇺🇸

  9. Reduces visibility, already a weakness of the existing largest GM crossovers.
The A pillar and external mirror is bad enough.
I hope this doesn’t ‘happen’ on the 2025 Enclave!

  10. Distinctive…glad GM trying something bold w.o. being over the top. Think BMW….

  11. It looks like a much bigger version of the sharksfin trim on the Kia Sorento.

  12. Was considering buying a Traverse in 2024, but this new C-Pillar may be a deal breaker for me. I’ll have to see it in person.

  13. What pole? I don’t see where I can vote in a pole! NO, it is ugly and I am a diehard Chevy fan for over 55 years. The over all direction chevy has taken over the last 4 years is not to my liking.

  14. Looks stupid, just like it does on the GMC Terrain. I guess I’ll be looking at the new GMC Acadia this next time when I trade in my 2021 Traverse.

  15. The problem with it is it takes up viewing space because of its thickness. I wouldn’t consider it a deal breaker though, just an annoying feature that could have been executed better.🤷🏾‍♂️

    1. Executed is the right word—maybe it’ll be executed on the next model or two and sent to the great beyond.

  16. The fin can wrapped. Nothing can be done about the four cylinder.

  17. NO!!! Poor styling decision in my opinion.

  18. No… after buying 3 traverses in a row, I won’t buy the 2024 because of that ugly reverse shark fin. Simply awful.

  19. Not only does it look ridiculous, it makes already poor visibility worse. The pillars and mirrors on almost all modern vehicles limit visibility so much that I wouldn’t be surprised if it contributed to the number of accidents.

  20. I like the design , to me 2024 models are in beautiful shape and sharp. I have 2022 RS model and regret for having new design after two years of my vehicle age 😔

    1. The C pillar looks ok, my opinion s that it does help the vehicle have a slightly better madculine look.
Now let’s see something substantial by speaking about this new engine, it’s towing capacities and it’s long term “wear and tear”.

      1. I’ve changed my mind—after seeing this model in person I’d sure like to see a better look on next year’s model or “soon after”. Frankly I still have reservations about the new engine and that is my current hang up. <

  21. How ugly can the designers make a car look. Between this and the ugly kick-up on the back door of the last model of Impala
(Wife’s 2019 Impala) Not a very good design for the last series of Impala’s.

  22. Jimmy Buffett would have liked it………..

  23. I think it looks ridiculous and it serves no practical purpose. A piece of plastic sticking up part of the way to the roof appearing to support nothing. And it reduces visibility too. By the looks of the poll more then 2/3 of folks agree with me. Add to that a small 4 cylinder engine and I would buying a Buick Enclave. That turbo will be working overtime to produce the HP and torque that GM claims. I can’t imagine pulling 5000 lbs with that power plant. BUT I have a 2022 Traverse Premium trim which I will be keeping for quite a while, thank you.

  24. I like the fin. I have a 21 Blazer RS, and it too has a fin look; reminiscent of the 1960 Dodge Polara.

  25. The fin is a travesty.

When will this floating roof styling trend end?
    They’re all horrible!!

    Reply
    1. The STRIKING American companies follow each other’s designs. Drink from the same trough in Detroit. Stellantis not as much though. Don’t see floating roofs on BMW’s, Genesis’ and Volvo’s.

      Reply
  26. Hard no. It looks illogical as if designed by a moron. If you want the “floating roof” simply eliminate the visible c pillar altogether rather than hack off the top. I’m convinced, after seeing the travesty that is the Cadillac ct5, that gm has an office of stylistic sabotage and that office is currently fixated on c-pillars as their easy place to ruin otherwise passable designs. I surely would like to know, 1) how does this type of thing make it to final production before they gather feedback to help their apparently blind mgmt see the ugliness, and 2) who is getting fired? This is marketing incompetence. It’s not “daring” or avant-garde, its offensive and stupid and offputting to the average beholder and will absolutely have negative impact on sales. Surely there were hundreds of low level engineers who worked on this and said it was ugly, yet some executives knew better? Chevy is sold to the masse, who want conventional beauty. Surely there is an eccentric customer or 2 who lust after the cross eyed circus freak with an extra leg and a massive humpback but you dont sell 200,000 units a year with a design catering to that guy!

  27. What is wrong with you design engineers! I have a beautiful 2022 Traverse Premier and now what happened. The fin sticks out like a sore thumb! Huge blind spot as well. The front looks awesome though! How about bringing back pinstripe Whitehall tires again?! Vehicles nowadays have a discount dollar store appearance. Automakers invest all their resources into all the bells and whistles and technologies while the aesthetic appearance looks cheap!

    1. Pinstripes and whitewalls would be welcome!

  28. No, it’s weird! But LOVE everything else about the new traverse! Wish it didn’t have the weird shark fin! I habe a 2023 Traverse and boy do I like the front end of the new model, but that fin has me keeping the one I have

  29. Get rid of the shark fin, it’s killing the whole vib of the truck.
Install the Cadillac Blackwing engine, instead of the four cylinder that your offering.

  30. It looks STUPID!!!! and it creates a blind spot!!!!!

  31. I love it !! I hated the current design and traded my 2015 Traverse for the Ford Explorer! I can’t wait for the 2024 Traverse to become available! I am definitely trading when they do!

  33. My husdand and I totally agree …Don’t like the C-pillar look, it looks disconnected.
And certainly wouldn’t like the view from the third seat.

  34. I don’t like it blocks side view for rear passengers like the gmc Acadia better.

  35. It may look better if the fin were oriented as a “Shark Swims.” The flow appears counter intuitive. The antenna on the roof appears correct! Is this C-Pillar backwards, or is it just me?

    Reply
  36. My 2020 Traverse got totaled back in March and I was going to replace it with the 2024 until I saw the C pillar, the first thing that came to mind was not a sharks fin but the tail of an airplane. I told the dealer I wasn’t buying because it looks like it’s missing the American Airlines logo.

    Reply
  37. It would be flying backwards though.

    Reply
    1. Yep it was a backwards idea with that design. Since the Traverse almost looks like the Tahoe they should have done the same thing with the C-pillar.
