Here Are The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Fuel Economy Ratings

Making its big debut last summer, the 2023 GMC Canyon introduces an all-new third generation for the pickup nameplate, complete with new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and new tech features. The third-generation Canyon also introduces the new off-road-capable 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X trim level, which offers up loads of trail-ready equipment and features. Now, GM Authority has uncovered fuel economy ratings for the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X.

The front end of the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X.

Per GM Authority sources, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X returns an estimated 16 mpg in the city, 16 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg combined. With those numbers, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X just so happens to be the least-efficient trim level in the entire third-gen Canyon lineup.

Check out the table below to see how the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X stacks up against the other GMC Canyon configurations, including those from the preceding 2022 model year:

For those readers who may be unaware, all 2023 GMC Canyon trim levels are equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, specifically the 2.7L Turbo High Output variant rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The second-generation GM 8-speed automatic transmission harnesses output, with 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X models equipped as standard with four-wheel drive. The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 and Denali are also equipped with four-wheel drive as standard, while rear-wheel drive is offered elsewhere in the lineup.

Some of the factors contributing the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X’s poor fuel economy numbers include greater aerodynamic drag resulting from the pickup’s factory-installed 3-inch lift, as well as its wider stance. The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X is also quite heavy, weighing in at 4,970 pounds, as compared to 4,670 pounds for the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4, and 4,860 pounds for the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali.

As a reminder, the 2023 GMC Canyon rides on the updated GMT 31XX-2 platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

  1. You can’t have your cake and eat it when you buy a truck like this. If you want fuel economy buy a 2 wheel drive, but you still won’t get good mpg’s. I don’t understand how a truck that weighs 1500 lbs less than a full size can get worse mpg’s.

    1. 200 lbs less

    2. Not sure which trucks you’re comparing Bob but I just checked GMC’s web site and the 2023 GMC Canyon Denali weighs approx the same as the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali.

      1. Can you provide links? Cause my research shows the canyon Denali is 600lbs lighter, or 15%. It’s also shorter and thinner. Course I still think GM asked the EPA to beef the ratings cause they weren’t doing anything to the emmisions testing so they could sell them till the EPA got off their A@@

      2. Precisely why, when it comes to dollar for, comfort , efficiency, and capabilities. I would gladly pay a few dollars extra to get get a full-size truck. I don’t care what kind of power the 2.7 is capable of, it’s only slightly more than half size of a 5.3 , with basically the same or worse fuel economy. I admit this truck looks better than all the S-10’s, Colorado’s and Canyons before it. But it also weighs more than twice as much and costs considerably more than twice as much.

  2. I’m waiting for my Canyon which was built in early February. It been listed as shipped for two months now. Mileage shouldn’t be a factor on a vehicle when it’s designed for off road. That’s like NASCAR winning races based on fuel economy- it happens, but it’s ugly. Should be about power and performance.

  3. The sooner they go electric the better! Most of the fuel goes out the exhaust in an ice vehicle! Pathetic fuel results and there is a better way staring us right in the face!

  4. Perhaps the two door version might get better milage.

  5. In response to Bob P, worse mileage than a full-size in part because they discontinued the wonderful Buick/GM 3800. While you wouldn’t win any races with it, its easy low end torque and terrific mileage would have made it ideal as a base or mid-level engine choice. Would have been great as well in a S10 or Saturn Vue for that matter.

    1. The 3800 was an awesome motor, never understood why they got away from that one. Ran like a rabbit and 30mpg

  6. If you took off the front guard how much would it improve ? Very abysmal. Yes I know it’s off roader but you better keep 2 10 gal tanks handy!

  7. I think they’re missing the mark not making a new Syclone street truck and letting the Chevy do the off-road truck.

  8. Loved my 5.3L Colorado but the Z71 trim and 4.10’s and 4 speed meant 15 mpg city/highway… I see we’ve figured out how to get 1 MPG better since that 2010 and all the fixin’s added.

Goes back to why I got rid of that truck though. The 17′ Sierra Z71 with a 5.3L, 6 speed gave me 17mpg day to day and low 20’s highway 70-75… And well the bigger tank did 400-450 miles.

Smaller tanks and arguably worse fuel economy across the truck line since those first V8 Ecotec truck motors came out.

Play around with the fueleconomy.gov comparison thing.
You’d be surprised how well 6.2L 17′ Extended Cab with the 6 speed did.

  9. I purchased a Nissan Pro 4X naturally aspirated 3.8, V6 stranded on all models.
Averaging 19 city 27 highway. Best truck I have ever owned, and I had two Colorado’s bryer. I would never buy a GM product again, too many little problems.

    1. Cool. You would get very similar fuel mileage in the Colorado then, since that frontier is EPA rated 19/17/22 and the 4×4 Colorado is EPA rated at 19/17/21. But, I do agree, technology has it issues, so the frontier is definitely the choice if a person wants to avoid new technology.

  10. DONT LAUGH ANYONE!

I want General Motors to bring back the Chevrolet Lumina Van! AKA Dustbuster.
I had so many of them and the Pontiac Trans Sport. Us north Americans were so backwards and couldn’t deal with the dramatic and futuristic design. Everyone ram to a square box boring caravan that had quality interiors that looked like fisher price made them.

So Bring the design back. Make the headlights and front bumper like an envision keeping the same lumina windshield put a reliable and economical engine in it. Also make it all wheel drive have options of 17” to 19” rims the same interior as a Malibu or lacrosse beautiful digital displays navigation and nice heater controls. A nice center console like a car with storage and cup holders and behind the armrest there are 2 cup holders for the 2 rear captain seats or the 3 modular seats. Dual power sliding doors, power tailgate. Nice tubular roof rack rails off of an uplander. Leather interior but configure the rear so those big side cubbies are smaller you can fit a split bench for 3. Put the spare tire in the vehicle under the storage tray. Or use run flats. Keep the high mount long taillights but make them LED sort of like a Cadillac. I honestly feel that design brought back to life with todays tweaks and technology, sell like crazy. It’s not a huge people mover like other manufactures but a smaller stylish sporty luxurious ALL PURPOSE VEHICLE. Mini van/ suv / Car. I mean in Europe still today they have vehicles that look so close to a lumina everywhere. When we were snubbing our noses at it Europeans thought they were the most amazing vehicle they have ever seen.

I would love to see someone from GM do a mock up of one.

    Thanks everyone
