Just a year after General Motors reported that crossover exports passed the 300,000-unit mark, the company’s South Korean subsidiary has now just announced that more than 500,000 Chevy Trailblazer units have been exported out of Korea.
GM Korea has stated that cumulative exports of the domestically built Chevy Trailblazer totaled 518,583 units as of the end of April, when the small global crossover passed the half-million-export mark from South Korea. This figure includes an unspecified number of units of the Buick Encore GX, which the subsidiary treats as a “de facto model twin” and integrates into all Trailblazer project statistics.
The 500,000-unit export milestone for the Chevy Trailblazer, which is built at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea, is very significant and of special importance to GM’s operations in that country. In fact, it becomes the locally manufactured vehicle to exceeds that figure in the shortest period of time, and unlike other vehicles from South Korean companies, the Trailblazer is a product that is currently only manufactured in Korea.
In particular, this represents a notable acceleration in the pace of Chevy Trailblazer exports, from an average of almost 12,000 units shipped abroad per month at the beginning of last year, to more than 16,000 units per month over the last twelve months. The average is even higher during the first four months of 2023, confirming the sustained increase in production levels at Bupyeong.
In addition to the outstanding number of cumulative exports, the Chevy Trailblazer consolidated itself as the most exported vehicle in the Asian country and once again led the ranking in April. According to official figures from the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), the Chevy Trailblazer – together with the Buick Encore GX – had a total of 22,694 units exported last month, ranking first for the last three consecutive months in Korean exports.
The Chevy Trailblazer first began shipping overseas from South Korea in November 2019 as a global crossover that GM developed by combining its established design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities in that country. The biggest market and main export destination for the Chevy Trailblazer built at the South Korean plant is the United States, where it is growing in popularity ahead of the arrival of the refreshed model set to launch in the fall.
