General Motors just announced that Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX exports from South Korea surpassed the 300,000-unit mark, which is the main manufacturing center for Chevrolet and Buick‘s subcompact-plus crossovers worldwide. Despite ongoing production difficulties since its international launch, the Trailblazer and Encore GX assert their presence and popularity in the highly competitive global small utility segment.
The automaker stated that the Chevy Trailblazer and the Buick Encore GX ended last March with a cumulative total of 311,023 units exported from the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea, marking a new milestone since they were first shipped to other countries in November 2019. In particular, the largest market and main export destination for the Trailblazer built at the South Korean plant is the United States.
That 311,023-unit total includes both Trailblazer and Encore GX units combined. As both crossovers share the exact same VSS-F platform and production plant, the South Korean subsidiary does not publish individual figures for each model, but rather counts them as one.
In any case, that cumulative total announced by the GM subsidiary represents an average of nearly 12,000 units exported in each of the 26 months since the start of the current Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX’s international shipments. The models kicked off GM Korea’s strategy of normalizing operations and have played a key role in the recovery of the automaker’s business in the Asian country.
Despite COVID-19 and the global shortage of semiconductor chips, the company managed to export 126,832 units of the subcompact crossovers during 2021. In fact, last year, the Chevy Trailblazer was the second-most exported vehicle from South Korea, posting a substantial 163 percent sales increase in the U.S. market, leading its category alongside the Encore GX with a combined market share of 16.2 percent.
The Chevy Trailblazer CUV made its world debut in China on April 16, 2019 during that year’s Shanghai Auto Show, being first announced for North America a month later. The model went on sale in early 2020, just as the pandemic began, the latter causing multiple difficulties that severely limited the vehicle’s production and popularity in both the United States and the South Korean market. The Encore GX also debuted in April 2019 in China, and the U.S. version was announced in May 2019.
Exports of the Chevy Trailblazer are expected to continue to rise as the automaker is expanding the model’s production volume in South Korea, as the GM Authority exclusively reported.
