The Chevy Express and GMC Savana full-size vans have been around in their current form since 2003, when the nameplates moved to the mildly updated GMT610 platform, and can trace their lineage all the way back to 1996. A staple of GM’s fleet lineup, the Chevy Express and GMC Savana may now be set to receive a comprehensive redesign that will see both models move to a new battery-electric platform.
According to a recent report from Autoweek, the GMT610-based Chevy Express and GMC Savana will be put to pasture at the end of the 2025 model year, at which point GM will introduce replacement models that tap its electric skateboard chassis technology, as well as its Ultium modular battery design and Ultium Drive electric motors.
While one could argue GM already has the electric fleet van market covered off with its BrightDrop Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 utility vans, these vehicles are larger than the current Chevy Express and GMC Savana. As their names suggest, the Zevo 600 has roughly 600 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Zevo 400 boasts approximately 400 cubic feet of cargo space. The Express and Savana, by comparison, have 239.7 cubic feet in Regular Length form and 284.4 cubic feet in the Extended Length body style.
The Zevo 600’s electric range and performance may give us a rough idea of what to expect from the replacements for the Chevy Express and GMC Savana. The launch Zevo 600 model utilizes an all-wheel-drive setup with two electric motors and a 20-module battery, and has an estimated driving range of 250 miles. Other model variants will arrive at a later date, including a less powerful, front-wheel-drive version of the Zevo 600.
For now, the current Chevy Express and GMC Savana will continue with minimal changes, although they will drop the optional 2.8L I4 LWN turbo-diesel Duramax engine. Production of the 2023 model-year Express and Savana will begin at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri on August 15th, 2022.

Seriously, what is GM going to do when they finally realize that the majority of their customers don’t want an EV?
Someone needs to hold a cold wet rag to GMs head whilst it vomits up the rancid woke EV slop it keeps mistakenly devouring. GM is already in the throws of financial disaster. Why would it destroy the steady cash cow it has lived off of for years.
GM needs new leadership now that will listen to customers rather than government!
Ed, you nailed it Sir –that’s exactly what the deal is !
Hard to do when the government buys half your vehicles.
The current woke government will be replaced in less than two years and the ship will be righted, where will GM be? In EV hello?
By 2026, the GMT600/610 production run will have been longer than the careers of many employees who retired from GM.
Or have been given the axe in one of their many “rightsizings”
Have a 2022 Savana passenger van with the 6.6 401 hp V8 which replaced my old 1993 chevy 350 van. This new 6.6 engine is incredible. Towing a loaded car trailer with the old one cross country was a chore with the gas pedal to the floor most of the time – 9-10 mpg towing or not. New one doesn’t even know it is towing anything at 80 mph with cruise control on. 15-17 mpg towing. 18-20 unloaded. Will keep it until I croak. They can keep their electric crap – which does as much damage ecologically as internal combustion engines – only doing it stealthily, making people think electric is the holy grail – it’s not.
Total agreement. This will be my last vehicle replacement. It will last me the rest of my life 25+ years. When it breaks for good I’m walking. 😉
At least everyone seems happy about this news.
Too bad GM Authority constantly ‘moderates’ my comments…. I don’t want to say what has been moderated.
Finally, an updated people mover that we so desperately need.
Hopefully it’s not an all electric.
Unfortunately it is an EV
Nobody wants an EV except the government who don’t even drive. This is about screwing you, your country, your oil companies which we need because going green means starving and freezing. We don’t NEED or want an EV. C’mon, wake up GM and C?
Where is it going to be built?
Orion?
China
Ok the new 2027 Chevy Express, GMC Savana shouldn’t be battery Electric it should be plug in hybrid or Hydro Because battery EVs are Rubbish and not Everyone wants one And also they Have crappy range and There battery’s can Catch on Fire
I’m buying one of these “dumb vans” tomorrow and will drive it into 2040. Can someone point me in the direction of the best way to update the stereo Bluetooth etc? Thanks.
In think Toyota is doing right by not engaging into the EV hype. And the big three should follow suit and continue building ICE. They are the biggest and number one in the world and I think they are smarter the that bozo in the oval office.
