2022 GMC Sierra HD Trucks Now In Production

Production of the 2022 GMC Sierra HD began on July 12th at the GM Flint assembly plant in Michigan, where – as GM Authority exclusively reported a few days ago – General Motors is trying to increase the number of temporary workers.

Regardless of how that works out, production of the GMC Sierra HD is expected to increase later this year, when the truck becomes one of the first vehicles to be built at the re-opened GM Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada, this fall. The same will apply to the Sierra HD’s corporate cousin, the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD.

The 2022 GMC Sierra HD, comprised of the 2500HD and 3500HD heavy duty models, is entering its third model year of the current, T1 platform generation with only minor changes. These include a slight revision to the range of exterior colors, the newfound availability of 20-inch machined face aluminum wheels with high gloss Black accents and beadlock appearance (RPO code SQ9) as an LPO, or dealer-installed, option, and the addition of Seat Belt Adjustable Guide Loops. Furthermore, the base trim level, previously known simply as Sierra, is being renamed to Pro.

Despite this name change, the 2022 GMC Sierra HD is priced to start at $37,895, including destination freight charge, in the United States. This is the cost of the rear-wheel-drive Sierra 2500HD Pro in the Regular Cab, Long Bed configuration with the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, and is paired with GM’s six-speed automatic transmission.

  2. Keep production rolling. Ordered my 2022 GMC 3500 DUALLY and can’t wait for it. Went all out Long box set up with the Dura-Max ready for towing a Big fifth wheel to all the best places. And looking for the great Northern lights and Michigan U.P. waterfalls. We were told a few options were not available this model year. Have to do without front sensors and a few others. Dealer told me mine was the only one they were allowed to order for that month.

  3. Thats great but what about 1500s. This is getting old and GM is not practicing smart business practices.

Dealers also need to order trucks that people want. Locally there are trucks sitting on the lot because no one wants them as they are waiting for full size to be built.

    1. My 3500 High Country Dually (event code 2000) has a TPW for this week. This is the only allocation my dealer has thus far for 2022 HDs. I hope there are no delays – hope to have it by mid to late Aug.

  4. GM is making smart decisions James. The HD’s are the most profitable vehicle they sell. It’s why any available resources get shifted to thier production. Order backlogs for HD’s are huge.

Was inside Oshawa last week, they are going FLAT out to get the HD line there up and running. Only news I found out was no dually production in Oshawa, they will stay in Flint.

  5. My 2022 3500HD SLT is on a train and on the way to my dealer. They should get it early next week. Looking forward to the huge upgrade from my 2007 Chevy 2500HD work truck. Of the three 2022 HD’s my dealer has been able to order, mine is the only one that was not missing parts and has been completed.

  7. Chips and other parts shortages, i put a order in for a GMC 2500 SIERRA crew cab LSE 2ND WEEK OF FEB 2021,DEALER CONTACTED ME FIRST WEEK OF JUNE AND SAID MY TRUCK WILL NOT GET BUILT THIS MODEL YEAR DUE TO CONSTRAINTS. JUST A LITTLE UPSET,,This past week i went to a Chevrolet dealer and ordered a Silverado crew cab 2500 HD LT ,dealer said i hope you get it by December.pluss the whole convenience package 11 has been removed from production all a part of the HD radio unit which impacts several other features,no back up hitch guidance and no advance trailer system and camera,s ,very sad and i know alot of people will be upset and i am upset,The chip shortage is bad. Now the other sad part is I retired from the Flint Truck plant in 2006 which makes the chev and Gmc HD,S and i live 10 miles from the plant, its just crazy whats going on.

  8. Ordered a 2500 AT4 with Duramax and the Technology + Driver Safety packages on June 2nd. So far the allocation for my dealer has been slow with no acceptance from GM yet, but 12 others configured like mine have been accepted and put in the queue. It’s moving, just slowly – the chip shortages are impacting worse than expected. Initially I was told November would be optimistic but now that early 2022 might be more realistic.

If it pushes far enough it seems like it might be worth canceling and waiting for a 2023 with refreshed interior.

  9. Why would I want a new one even with the front end facelift. It still looks like a dog compared to my 2018 GMC Sierra 2500hd. Best truck they ever made with same quality components and the exact same engine and transmission. But it rides better in town and is actually faster than the 2021 stated figures. But the best part was the price. Lots were full of trucks in 2018. Couldn’t sell them. Paid $9k under MSRP and with my $3500 in GM dollars and matching $3k bonus dollars I saved $15.5k off MSRP. At the rate that GM is going it might be MANY years before I buy another truck from them.

    1. Great, I’m sure GMC will be sad to hear that, yeah, not at all. To each his own on looks. Ordered a 2500 AT4 Duramax and will now wait it out. Have a 2020 1500 AT fully loaded and the dealer is offering 8K more than I paid, all in. It’s the best looking truck on the road, and I am making money on the 2020. No need to be mad you’re not in the same boat, is what it is.

  10. Will all HD production be eventually moved to Canada or just some percentage? What will determine where your ordered HD will be built, since I’m hoping for increased quality in the coming years? Specifically looking and waiting to likely order a ‘22.5 or ’23 HD 3500 SRW gas. Need better gearing or trans options, as does everyone, along with some interior updates.

  11. Will all HD production be moved to Oshawa or just a percentage of it here soon? Sounds like this area has a lot of auto factory heritage and quality should not be an issue.

If going to be built in both the US and Oshawa, is there a distinguishing factor as to where one HD is built over the other? Just curious and by no means wanting to upset anyone over the question. Looking at a potential ‘22.5-23ish Sierra 3500 DC gas once some updates occur.

  17. I ordered a 2500 Denali Sierra from Dave Smith GMC in Idaho on June 24th this year. Dealer told me it would take 6-8 weeks (now he denies telling me that). Dealer does not follow up at all until prodded multiple times. Fails to respond to inquiry emails, and then goes on and on about his wonderful customer service because he finally called after a flaming email to him. For about 5 weeks GMC chat has been telling me it has been produced and the next step will be shipping. But my dealer is telling me that it is awaiting a micro-chip. Someone is a liar! GMC needs to get their act together and update customers who have put down large deposits of money and have already waited in excess of 5 months to even get an update on when they may expect delivery. The GMC chat is worthless.

  19. It’s seems to me the dealers are being kept in the dark as well. My father and I ordered a 2500 and 3500 on the same day. The 2500 has supposedly been built for months but he’s being told there are shipping issues. However, after hearing these two examples above I’m guessing g it’s really a chip issue. I’d be surprised if I get the 3500 by summer.
