Midsize Trucks
Despite the slight uptick increase in sales volume, the GMC Canyon remained in last place in the midsize pickup truck segment. We attribute the slight increase in Canyon sales to better availability of the truck and to a positive reception to the 2021 GMC Canyon.

Meanwhile, sales of the Canyon’s corporate sibling, the Chevy Colorado, fell nearly 26 percent to 14,776 units. The results landed the Colorado in fifth place in the midsize pickup truck segment, falling two places from the first quarter of 2021. Meanwhile, the segment-leading Tacoma outsold the Colorado by over 58,000 units.
Combining GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado sales ranks GM in fourth place in its segment by sales volume, though the combined total is still less than a quarter of the number of units sold by the Tacoma.

The Chevy Silverado saw a 35 percent jump in overall sales volume to 164,731 units. Sales of the Silverado Heavy Duty and Medium Duty models increased 42 percent and 79 percent, respectively, while Silverado Light Duty sales grew 31 percent. The results place the Silverado in first place in its competitive set, ahead of the Ram pickup and Ford F-Series.

While the Sierra managed to post the second-largest increase in its segment, it still came in fourth place amongst its full-size pickup truck competitors. We attribute the very healthy jump in Sierra sales to better availability of the pickup truck. We should also highlight the fact that interest in and sales of the GMC Sierra will likely improve even further after the 2022 model year refresh, due to launch later this year. Interesting to see GM taking the lead by that large of a margin over the other full size pickups. With the refresh coming up, I could see them take an even bigger slice of the pie.
I’ll be happy that this will finally shut Ford up with their best selling truck for 40 years lie.
Shut your mouth
Bite me animal.
Ford has the best “fleet pricing” for companies, which is why Ford has been the best selling truck for 40 years, all of the fleet sales to businesses. Compared to retail sales
Do they count the f150, 250, 350, 450 in there total sales to claim that? I have seen them say best selling for 40+ years straight also and I find that hard to believe.
Yes. Ford words it like “f-series is the best selling for 40 years”… they count ALL f-series trucks together..
The Colorado & Canyon both need an LS aka V8. Just an option mind you. That IMNSHO would help a bunch.
While the V6 is ok the LS option would be icing on the cake. if memory serves me correctly, the V8 was an option not so long ago for the little trucks.
Just one of many thought’s to the truck sell.
Let’s see what the big mouths for Toyota defenders will be saying on this article. When it’s an article about how the Colorado is so far behind the Taco, they are on here waving their pom-poms. Will they show up here?
Both Toyota and Nissan should just give up on the full sized trucks. The Tundra is between 250K and 300K below the F150, Ram and Silverado. The Titan is UP more than 45% and still didn’t crack 18,000 unite YTD. Guess those who make the best trucks are thus rewarded with the highest sales.
Only problem is GM completely relies on truck sales, Toyota does not. Toyota is the most valuable auto maker in the world, if Toyota wanted to sell in fleet numbers like GM, they would, but it wouldn’t turn a profit. You’re trying too hard, Toyota’s financials absolutely murder GM’s and most other auto makers.
Zach
Not for long!
The U.S. is Toyota’s largest and most profitable market. As Toyota’s best customer we get
– Heavily out dated Trucks and Large SUVs
– Slow accelerating Hybrids that use just as much gas as their gasoline counterparts on the open road
– Overpriced/Underpowered Sports cars.
– Child sized 3rd rows
– Crossovers that lack cargo space
– and a crappy Entune Infotainment system
Plus they hail from a racist xenophobic country, that’s been screwing us on trade for the last 75 years.
FK em!
A hybrid (Rav4 Prime) is the second fastest vehicle in Toyota’s lineup behind the Supra. The Supra is knocking at the 11’s with just 382 hp, the Hybrid Sienna gained 14 mpg going from 22 to 36 combined at the expense of 1 second in the 0-60 dash at a still respectable mid 7 second; and most CUV’s outside of the Traverse and Atlas don’t have adult sized third rows. Not sure what you are getting at. Yes they are dated, but they are making some good choices that I wish GM would follow (standard full safety suite including adaptive cruise on all levels and all vehicles) while also some that have me thinking WTF are they thinking (basically most of the Tacoma).
Fastest Toyotas
First: BMW Z4
Second: RAV4 Prime
TuRD: Camry TRD & Avalon TRD
Zach: I wouldn’t say that. Does Toyota sell more sedans (basically just the Camry and Corolla) than what GM does? Yes. But take the Camry/Corolla sales in total, and it’s a fraction of what Toyota sells overall. How is that different from GM? For GM, they have the Spark, Malibu, CT4 and CT5 for sedans. Just like all brands at this time, outside the micro-chip shortages, GM probably sells about half the amount of sedans combined as Toyota does, but the rest is SUV/CUV/trucks. Just like Toyota.
Saying Toyota is the most valuable auto maker in the world? Can you give your source on that statement?
Lastly, if you don’t thing Toyota sells in large numbers to fleet, then you need to wake up. Toyota sells a ton of vehicles into fleets. Let’s just hope our current president changes it so that Toyota doesn’t get one single sale to any government fleets.
What’s wrong with Toyota getting government fleet sales?
Deeznuts: Now I know you are just trying to be difficult.
Everything is wrong with Toyota getting any government fleet sales. I pay taxes. Those taxes are used to purchase fleet vehicles. I in no way on earth, ever, give my permission for the government to use my tax dollars to buy anything from Japan. Ever.
Do some research. Do you think the Japanese would EVER allow their taxpayer funds to be used to purchase American brands? No. They are fiercely loyal and enact many forms of protectionism in Japan. The last thing those people would do is use taxpayer money to purchase something from the USA to use in fleet. Your ignorance and lack of patriotism sickens me.
Lol how old are you? You think the government needs your permission to do anything? What is an American brand now? Is there such a vehicle that is even truly all made in the USA? I doubt it they all have components from China in them and other places. But the funniest part is how you think you control what the government does I appreciate that laugh
Deeznuts: Just shows how slow to comprehend you must be. Me saying above that I do not give the govt permission to use my tax money to purchase an import brand (Japanese especially) vehicle for fleet is symbolic. It would be like someone going on FB and putting a post telling FB that they do not give permission for……..whatever. The fact that you took that literally is what should give the rest of us a good laugh.
I find anyone who lives in the USA and donates to the Japanese brands should really consider moving to Japan. (again, not literally, I’m making a point just so you can keep up). And to answer your question of what’s American? Follow the money.
World’s most valuable Automakers
Winner! ! ! Tesla $655 Billion market Cap
Loser! ! ! Toyota $290 Billion
Thanks Peter G.
Zach, your response? (or should I say proof)
If tesla is the most valuable like you are saying wouldn’t that mean Ford, GM, dodge, Nissan, Honda are all losers to since they are not the most valuable?
Hard to say what automaker is the most valuable. In terms of overall assets, on a global scale, it’s certainly Toyota. In the US lowercase gm is still holding onto the top spot, but trending in the wrong direction since 2015 (thanks Mary Barra). Toyota is trending the right way in terms of market share. Tesla does have the highest price per share, but their assets are comically small compared to Toyota… So there’s that too. Personally, I consider Toyota to be the largest, most valuable global automotive company and it’s not even that close.
It’s not fleet, GM stopped taking fleet orders on Silverado’s on January 1st, 2021 and won’t accept them again until mid-August.
Not the best, just the cheapest. Kind of like Walmart.
“Combining GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado sales ranks GM in fourth place in its segment by sales volume, though the combined total is still less than a quarter of the number of units sold by the Tacoma.”
And here come the pom-pom waving Japan fans! Funny thing little s steve, you go directly to the Colorado/Canyon/Tacoma thing just like I said. Let’s talk about the real story here. GM/Ford/Ram smash Toyota and Nissan every month, every year in every way with the full sized trucks. Every time!
Why don’t you run back to your beloved Mazda brand and wipe your tears away.
Pom Pom waving Japan fans? I thought Toyota’s were made in the USA? And the real story is those smaller trucks are becoming more and more popular l.
Deeznuts: Follow the money. I don’t care where they are assembled. I refuse to send my money to Japan.
So if the real story is about how the smaller trucks are becoming more and more popular, where are the numbers to show it? No Deeznuts, the real story here is that Toyota and Nissan are getting their a– handed to them by GM and Ford and Ram.
So you make no sense at all. You claim you don’t like things made in Japan but then you turn around and say I don’t care where things are assembled lol. It seems to me each year more and more of these vehicles that are supposedly “American made” which is a joke in itself these days are being moved to Mexico lol
Will you send your money to China? Because Mary has no problem doing that if you buy a GM.
Deeznuts
Tacoma now built in Guanajuato & Tijuana Mexico. Neither place is in the U.S.
Ahh made in Mexico what a surprise I wonder if it’s made in the same factory as the blazer?
What would they need to say Toyota is smashing the cheap plastic Colorado lol.
Deeznuts
Have you been inside a Toyota? The things have more hard plastic than a Lego convention.
You mean like the Silverado interior?
sample Toyota commercial:
If you enjoy hard plastic as much as a gold digging wife. Toyota has the vehicles for you. All our plastics are 100% Jan approved.
The plastics in your Silverado? Interior wise ram has the best the Silverado is trash sorry.
Just as I predicted!
You predicted that GM would outsell all the other brands and that interior is a non-factor in the decision? Wouldn’t that be something if the sales fell slightly with the redesigned interior next year as they gained a few more fancy yuppie city dads buying them but lose a bunch of workers who don’t want to go to a car like interior and need something more functional…
Vehicle sales in the 2nd quarter of 2020 were down about 30% from 2019’s numbers due to the pandemic. A 30% gain in 2021 over 2020 is just a return to normal sales.
Numbers here really mean little right now outside who is dealing well it’s the shortages and who has focused best on the higher volume products.
Now if you can take advantage of this to grow a segment offer the trouble passes. That is a different story.
GM has done well focusing production on the most popular and profitable models. This will help the, weather the storm better here.
GM also has targeted the most popular CUV models and that has helped as they are not only about trucks.
To be honest this is some what how they have been working prior to the Chip problem. Focusing on faster moving and higher profit models and variations it has helped their income.
They can’t make up their minds, a couple days ago the Canyon was the worst selling midsized truck in the country, now it’s sales are up and Colorado’s are down. Guess it depends on whose cubicle you stop at.
Difficult to maintain sales with Wentzville closed for a couple months this year,
Build slow down, chip shortage, and watching Ranger, Tacoma, and Frontier reveal new models and refreshed features this year…. I can see the market share widen across the segment. What the numbers don’t show,
How many moved to the big trucks…
How many return buyers?
How many switched to a different brand?
How many bought a second vehicle from the segment?
How many were bought based on 4×4 lifted versions?
How many left their brand due to issues?
How many chose the brand based off road options?
How many based on fleet sales?
How many based tv commercials?
Be interesting to know these demographics instead of just basic sales in numbers.
I myself bought my new 2009 Colorado 4×4 v8 quad cab with leather and heated seats with 4:10 gears was just that…with the 5.3 as the final decision. I now have 115k miles on the clock. Hauled lots of stuff, did medium off road stuff and lots of highway miles. No plans on getting rid of it. It will naturally fit a 6.2 without any issues.
3rd quarter numbers will be interesting…
The next generation Colorado better be a Game changer. It most likely will never catch the Tacoma but being outsold by almost 20,00 by the Ranger is or should be unacceptable.
This is good news. But GM need to link up with other manufacturers to make chips for their vehicles in the United States and stop messing around. Microchips are now a strategic economic resource which need to be secured.
I would like to believe that these numbers are reality. However, with all the shortages, I am not sure it does. I would love nothing more than killing FORD’s slogan of the best selling truck for 40 years, regardless of how it happens. I think GM’s truck refresh is really important moving forward. The midsize Colorado, the LD and HD trucks all will need to be on point. Here’s to hoping it is.
