Updated 2022 GMC Terrain Officially Unveiled

General Motors has officially debuted the 2022 GMC Terrain mid-cycle refresh, which brings updated exterior styling and a revised cabin to the crossover, along with a new off-road-focused AT4 trim level.

GM originally planned to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the GMC Terrain for the 2021 model year, but setbacks brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to delay the updated crossover’s arrival until the 2022 model year.

The most apparent change made to the 2022 GMC Terrain is the newly restyled front fascia, which incorporates a larger reshaped grille, new C-shaped LED headlamps and a revised lower fascia with different foglights/daytime running lights. The crossover has also received a set of new LED taillights, as well.

Another major change is the addition of the AT4 trim level for the Terrain, effectively fulfilling GMC’s promise to bring an AT4 variant to every model it offers. The AT4 trim level gets a unique front fascia, gloss black painted wheels with off-road tires, a protective front skid plate and AT4 exterior badging. GMC promises further enhancements for the range-topping Terrain Denali model, as well, but details on the Denali are slim at the moment, with a market launch not scheduled until this fall. The Elevation Edition will also return for the 2022 model year for SLE and SLT trims.

Inside, the revised Terrain gets different available trim and fabric, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a built in Amazon Alexa AI assistant and a new Technology Package for SLT and AT4 trims. Rounding out the changes is a new color head-up display, which is available on the SLT and AT4 and standard on Denali trim level.

As GM Authority reported previously, GM has decided to drop the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine from the Terrain line up for 2022. The only available engine now is the turbocharged 1.5 I4 LYX gasoline engine, which produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The GM nine-speed automatic returns and is the only transmission available in the crossover.

GMC says the redesigned 2022 GMC Terrain SLE, SLT and AT4 will be available this summer, while the 2022 GMC Terrain Denali will be available in the fall.

  1. Hmm. I don’t see anything that looks much different. Still ugly as heck.

    1. The headlights in the front are much thicker as they go down. Grill is different. Not much else apparent except for the AT4 trim with more cladding.

    2. Worse than ugly! Butt ugly. The original terrain was the best looking IMO. When you start hanging crap on all vehicles to do as little as possible to save a buck and call it a new model, you end up with a butt ugly vehicle. That SUV will be a lose for 2022.

  2. I like it! I always did like the front end of this truck and this is a good evolution.

  3. For future… can it be too hard to put 2 pics. Of the vehicles side by side front shot and inline to see the side difference…. too much to ask…???
Maybe side by side rear shot…???

  4. The two biggest drawbacks are the loss of the 2.0L and the plastic Heads-Up Display. GM does real Heads-Up displays very well. I’ve seen the Grand Prix and Buick Lacrosse’s Heads-Up Displays. Why not use that one that projects the figures on the windshield?

    Reply
    1. that requires a windshield with special glass or a coating. So repairs to the glass can be more expensive.

      Reply
    2. It has to do with the angle and curvature of the windshield. The angle has to be within a certain range, and it can’t be too curved. The windshield shape also affects structure, aerodynamics and wind noise, visibility, which are all regulatory, so HUD compatibility takes last seat.

  5. Not bad looking, but without the 2.0L/9spd, it’s a pass for me. Coming soon to a Hertz lot near you!!

    Reply
    1. Well maybe not Hertz…

      Reply
  6. Not much of an improvement. I thought the headlights looked the same. It’s almost as if the designers were told to make it look feminine and then told to keep it that way.

  7. So they added the 9speed to the 1.5 is that correct? That should help increase performance as that is a nice addition of gears.

    Reply
    1. The 9 speed has always been standard on both engines in the second gen Terrain. The Equinox has the 6 speed standard on the 1.5

  8. It’s a no go without that 2.0 turbo , Honda can get away with that not you GM

  9. The new front fascia is much much better than outgoing one, people who say they don’t see any difference should see an eye doctor.

  10. No 2.0T no sale! Considering the Denali had the 2.0 std and most SLT’s were so equipped makes GM’s comical 8% figure seem highly contrived! Such a shame as this isn’t a bad looking CUV

    Reply
    1. I believe the 8% figure was for the Equinox. 27% of Terrain models had the 2.0l engine, which is why it’s strange that they would cancel it.

    2. No 2.0T deal breaker for me. 1.5T is a dog

  11. For those like me that need more power the Blazer is the answer, but I realize that the price could be a deal breaker for many.

    Reply
    1. Buick Envision is also a good answer as well since it has a 2.0l. I’ve heard there are good incentives on the Blazer. Might be worth checking out.

      Reply
      1. Envision is built exclusively in china. Hard pass.

        Reply
        1. So is your cellphone, your laptop and t.v. Are gonna pass on those too?

          Reply
          1. Only if you have Apple or a Chinese make.

            Reply
        2. Not a hard pass, an easy pass for me… Read my comments on cell phones below.

    2. But the Blazer offers “ok” power, not so hot looks and a high price. It’s not nearly as special as GM thinks it is.

  12. I was hoping for something like the TRD RAV4, but this is more of a appearance package to me.

    Reply
    1. The RAV4 is a good looking crossover in most trims.

      The Terrain is not.

      Reply
      1. I am in the other boat, I think the Terrain is the better looking vehicle compared to the unbalanced, mismatched, let’s add a bunch of plastic cladding Rav4. Don’t even get me started on the silly different color roof option.

        Reply
    2. Pathetic that GMC is the Pontiac excitment ‘brand’ of faux utility unable to compete against even TRD Rav4.

Terrain looks great in motion besting ‘Nox and many others in the class unfortunately it lacks the performance one would expect of GMC as a Jeep rival.

Also, interior is typical GM and reminds me of a 20013 Lacrosse.

      Reply
      1. When has GMC been a rival to Jeep?😆

        Reply
  13. Too bad. It’s still ugly and cheap.

    Reply
  14. No upgrades are worth the effort if they are still using an 80000 mile motor that can’t be repaired

    Reply
  15. Nothing says off road dominance like an AT4 badge that comes with black wheels and some dark trim. Turbo 1.5, WHOA?!?!?

I bet GM brass thinks this turd competes with the Bronco.

    Reply
    1. The comical thing is that Ford’s 1.5 3 cylinder is making 11 more HP than GM’s 1.5 4 banger in both the Bronco and Escape so it barely even competes with that.

      Reply
  16. Gm 1.5 low horsepower on the terrain Denali trim why Gm are you doing this to your customers do you really hate them that much you preach professional grade over the years of tv commercial but I think you weren’t paying attention what people like in the terrain specially the Denali trim . Was so looking forward to the 2.0 LTG ENGINE! Forcing me to your competitors

    Reply
  17. I actually like the new styling looks rugged that why I waited for 2022 but very disappointed with engine option 1.5 but might force me to buy a used 2020 Terrain denali with 2.0 l engine I definitely won’t buy 1.5 to small and no umph !! As far as I am concerned

    Reply
  18. Not much has changed from 2021. I drive a Terrain Denali and I can’t imagine the car without the 2.0. That was one of the big sellers for this car.

    Reply
  19. You mean u drive a 2020 Terrain denali there is no 2021 Terrain denali . I was hoping for a Terrain denali but with a 2.0 l engine not thst 1.5 crap that you use in a sub compact car . Gm is trying to up sale new clients with Buick’s and Acadia that offer bigger engines but a 55 in charge starting point and more for Denali trim some people don’t need a 7 seaters . I think gm wants as to start buying imports !!

    Reply
  20. To bad no 2.0t. I’ll just keep my 2018 Terrain. The bigger engine is quick and with the 9 speed does not seem to be overworked. The mid cycle refresh is basic. The AT4 option will help sales even with small H.P. 1.5t engine.

    Reply
  21. Yes envision built in China but in the beginning gm announced 2.0 l in the summer then no 2.0 litre who knows maybe gm will change there mind and hopefully 2. 0 l will make it again in the Terrain line up still early anything is possible with gm being so unpredictable we have another 7-8 month before the Terrain Denali makes it’s refresh debut. Wondering if gm reads any of these post from concerned future perspective gm buyers

  22. I was actually excited for the AT4… Parents have an AT4 Acadia. It’s beautiful and hauls. I didn’t need that much space so I was considering the smaller version, but I still need something that can tow. Guess I’ll be looking elsewhere. Great job GM. Really, you’re so brilliant.

    Reply
  23. Totally agree with you I was also excited to purchase new refreshed terrain Denali for my needs but now 1.5 as much as I DONT want to purchase imports but I think that my only option. Really want to stick with gm product brother loves his 2020 Terrain denali and he never bought a domestic car in his life only reason cause of the 2.0 l engine in the Denali made a good choice . Gm really needs to listen to educated buyers

  24. With that 1.5t engine, IMO, GM is erasing the Terrain from it’s offering and will have a slow death of low sales. Trying to make it like the Trailblazer.
