2022 GMC Terrain Will Not Offer 2.0L Turbo Engine

Back in September of 2020, GM Authority reported that General Motors was planning on introducing the refreshed 2022 GMC Terrain with a new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine option. Now, however, General Motors has changed its plans, and the refreshed Terrain will in fact not offer a new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine option.
General Motors’ original plan was to offer the 2022 GMC Terrain with the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LSY gasoline engine. As GM Authority exclusively reported back in July of 2020, GM dropped the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gas engine from the 2021 Chevy Equinox and 2021 GMC Terrain engine lineup, leaving the 1.5 I4 LYX gasoline engine as the exclusive powerplant option. Thus, the new 2.0L I4 LSY would join the LYX in the lineup for the 2022 model year. Now, however, that is no longer the case.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine accounted for only 8 percent of total 2020 model year sales for the Terrain’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Equinox, suggesting that customers are more than satisfied with the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX when it comes with GM’s crossover lineup.
For reference, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX produces 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm.
The GMC Terrain was originally set for a model refresh for the 2021 model year. However, as a result of complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the GMC Terrain refresh was instead pushed back to the 2022 model year, which will arrive as the fifth model year of the latest second-generation vehicle.
Although the 2022 GMC Terrain will not offer a new turbo 2.0L I4 gasoline engine, it will offer revised styling for the front and rear end, as well as revisions to the interior styling, interior colors, and interior materials. Under the skin, the 2022 GMC Terrain will ride on the GM D2 platform. Production will take place at the GM San Luis Potosi facility in Mexico.

I was holding out for the 4 Teaspoon, supercharged, turbo nitrous model.
It’s what’s on the outside that counts. Who looks under the hood these days. A family member bought a 2020 Equinox. Car size was important. Engine size and other tech aspects never came into the conversation
Ok so if you follow GM’s logic the 2.0L has low demand in the Equinox which means it’s worse in the Terrain. Then using this sites numbers and GM’s logic only ~27k Equinox were sold with the 2.0L which doesn’t warrant keeping the engine as an option for either models. With that in mind can someone tell me again why they have a Bolt and now a Bolt EUV since demand is low. Corporate fuel economy numbers or perhaps just to say they have one cause it’s surely not for sales by a long shot.
You need to understand Barra logic. Its all about the triple zero and diversity and of course numbers. Having any kind of excitement or choice doesn’t interest them and as long as they have the current red hot segments somewhat covered that’s good enough. Its all about numbers and agendas. The Vette is a halo car and big profit maker along with the pickup trucks. The Camaro doesn’t make as much money so it’s on the chopping block at least in gas fired versions along with most every sedan they make with your only choices a couple of Cadillac profit makers that have performance versions by default. I can understand trimming the fat in these tumultuous times but she is making so many holes in this once every man product for all company that it is soon going to look like swiss cheese!
There is a “method to the madness”. GM is obviously trying to push customers upmarket.
GMC Terrain buyers who want more power will be encouraged to look at an Acadia. Not that much larger than the Terrain, and GM wins if the customer buys one because the Acadia is higher priced. If the Acadia seems too big, they sales rep will walk them over to the new Buick Envision. Slightly smaller than the Terrain, but has the 2.0T engine.
Terrain Denali buyers who won’t accept the 1.5L will be encouraged to check out the Cadillac XT5.
Chevy Equinox buyers who want more power will be shown the Blazer. Again, not much bigger but more expensive.
Meanwhile, savvy buyers will leave the GMC or Chevy dealer and check out other more powerful options that are closer in price to what they would have paid for a well-equipped 2.0T Equinox/Terrain. In those cases, GM loses a sale and most likely a customer.
GM is going downhill fast!!
If you want a 2.0L, GM wants you to buy a Buick or a Caddy. My mom had a base 2019 Equinox with a 1.5L/6spd and it was a dog. Around town it was fine, but on the highway, it sucked…no power. I have a 2019 Redline with the 2.0L/9spd and it is a night and day difference from the smaller engine. Hopefully GM will drop the 6spd tranny and give these two SUV’s the 9spd. Otherwise, these will just be fillers for your local rental fleet. I had high hopes for the 2022 RS Equinox…too bad it will be nothing more than an appearance package. Time to look at something bigger.
I’ll go on record and say without reserve that I was totally, completely, 100% wrong about the 2.0 I4. I was sure that GM would keep it on for at LEAST the Terrain Denali, that they wouldn’t be so stupid, and said so numerous times in the story on this engine being dropped from the Equinox. And that was completely false.
Can’t believe I let myself get played by GM again. Let the record show that G8Burnout is an idiot lol.
The 2021 Terrain models with the 1.5L have the 9 speed automatic. The Equinox still uses the 6 speed auto.
gM was giving away the baby powered equinox. My nephew had one and like many others complained about how gutless it is. Its a hazard merging, passing and just generally a turd.
So I guess the 2022 Terrain Denali will also have a 1.5 engine so much for Denali professional grade !!! Gm what you doing was all excited to buy a refresh Terrain Denali with 2.0 litre engine I guess need to go look at other manufacturers . It’s all crazy if you ask me !!!
The joke will soon be on them especially when a prospective buyer goes to test drive a 42K Denali GMC professional grade (what a laugh) with his family and that little 170 HP dog can’t get out of it’s own way and the customer moves on to another company! The only way they will move these things is the rental fleets and with huge discounts. GM loses yet again!
Totally agree it’s ashamed I really wanted a GMC Terrain Denali 2022 but gm makes your decision very easy and switch to other manufacturers
Totally agree with the person that said”Barra logic” she needs to go, as do at least half of the board members- it’s time to get car people and marketing back in charge!
Gm know how always to ruin a good thing !!Yes time for MARY TO GO !!!
With the smaller engine, GM will lose buyers. I still contend that unlike diesel engines, turbocharged gasoline engines do not last as long as naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Probably even more true with 4 cylinder engines.
Yes totally agree but I should of know they were going to do this since they did it to the equinox what next 2 cyl engine we know electric is on the way but yet F A C still giving options with there vehicles v-6 and also 2 .0 litre turbo and still producing mote power then terrain ! Give people want they want and they will come ! But I’m also realistic!! I really like the new refresh with the new GMC Terrain for 2022 hopefully gm had a brain fart and will change there mind specially on the Denali trim !!
G8 Burnout you are not a idot u really believed like myself that gm would not make a stupid mistake like that on the terrain Denali like they did on the equinox and was hoping for the best but who know they might flip flop again !!!
At least it will have the 9sp auto while the Equinox will have the antiquated 6sp.
GM just basically handed Ford, Mazda, Jeep, Hyundai, and Kia a whole bunch of customers who would have otherwise purchased a 2.0T model. I will be in the market for a new crossover in this segment for the ’22 model year and it won’t be a GM product. I am replacing a 2015 Equiox with the 3.6L V6, and will go look at Ford Escape with the 2.0T ecoboost, the Mazda CX-5 turbo, and the Jeep Cherokee with the V6.
fords putting 3 and 4 tiny turbo gas in vehicles as large as explorer and edge, several others getting 1l 3 cyl. maverick and bronco 2l turbo hybrid gets 2.5 no turbo i seen the f 150 with 2.7 sell for less till recently and even then they sit for long time. and tine turbo don’t tow much and some need premium
gas when you tow . local Chevy in oct got bunce of the SUV decent prices till i saw tiny 4c turbo
when the SUV should have v6. waiting until the full size vans get back in production
So it will be 1 to 2 tenths of a second quicker 0-60 from the abysmal 9 second time they got on a 1.5T Equinox. Big deal and still dead last in its class
Never say never gm might change transmission seeing there doing everything else for the general public not to buy there vehicles!!
