The upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV is undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated new vehicle debuts of the year, reintroducing the iconic Hummer brand as an all-new battery-powered Sport Utility Truck (SUT). Now, with the new Hummer’s debut just a week away, it’s been reported that interested buyers will need to plunk down just $100 to secure a reservation.
That’s according to the vice president of GMC Marketing, Phil Brooks, per a recent report from Automotive News. Reservations will open up at 8 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 20th, 2020, following the Hummer EV’s reveal, with interested buyers offered four trims and the ability to select their preferred dealer. Options and pricing details are also expected to drop in a week’s time. Production will kick off in the fall of 2021, with orders finalized closer to production.
The Hummer EV reservations and reveal will coincide with a major new ad campaign focused on shifting customer perceptions of the Hummer brand away from the gas-guzzler associations of the original models.
“The Hummer EV is really going to change that because of the level of technology, the level of innovation and the fact that it’s all-electric, zero emissions,” Brooks said. “This is more than just a new vehicle for GMC. It really does signal us entering into the EV market in a big way.”
Originally scheduled for a reveal on May 20th, the GMC Hummer EV debut was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a reminder, the new all-electric utility vehicle will ride on GM’s dedicated BT1 electric vehicle platform and will utilize the automaker’s latest Ultium lithium-ion battery technology.
As always, GM Authority will be on hand to cover the GMC Hummer EV reveal as it happens, so stay tuned. In the meantime, subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Hummer news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Gotta give GM credit, they’ve done a terrific job keeping this thing under wraps. Contrast that with Ford, it seemed like someone was leaking photos of the Bronco every other week for 6 months leading up to the reveal.
Anymore the automakers leak only what they want.
When GM had criminally charged some folks a while back it slowed down the leak.
One Brand manager told me they know where on the proving grounds they can be seen. They only go there when they want seen,
Same on the road. The know where the photographers are and at times they will even tell them where to be if they want a good shot.
I will agree that sometimes happens, but making something seen and keeping something hidden are two very different things. And no one will convince me that Ford had any vested interest in letting Bronco images of the entire vehicle leak almost a year before the reveal event…unless they were truly that desperate. Incompetence or desperation…neither is good.
GM clearly doesn’t want the Hummer seen, so its been hidden well for almost a full year. And the fact that don’t want them “leaked” shows that they don’t feel the need to drum up hype by doing so…meaning they believe the product’s return is hype enough until the full reveal. Pretty telling, actually.
Ford has had very major stock issues and leadership issues.
If you look at the roll out of the Bronco it was well orchestrated over time just a little bit at a time.
It was very similar to the Camaro when it returned as GM needed to keep interest up as well they were struggling financially at the time.
Today with computer design and the ability to put other bodies on other chassis they can hid things right in plain sight till it is ready to be seen.
The C8 was an excellent example of hiding in plain sight.
You do recall the Mid Engine Malibu seen in NY. GM was tweaking the media on that one. It was a new Malibu with a V8 in the back seat C7 wheels and Ferrari tail lamps.
Then we had the Holden Ute that well covered the car.
GM needed to come with their EV plans. Hummer is a big point of their plan. But with the gap in time to the intro we are seeing the news dropped by GM at their own choosing keeping talk going.
The Bronco internal photos were controlled leaks. If they were not approved Ford would have had a big investigation on who did what.
Sounds desperate, Ford didn’t have to offer anybody anything to sell out at the bronco, this will either be a complete flop or well overpriced.
GM never learns from their mistakes.
LOL what? What’s being offered any differently? I only see GM giving people a choice of different trim levels and dealership options just like Ford did with the Bronco….
While it would be a good idea for a real off road model in the Bronco range the Hummer will do all that is expected.
It is priced right to pay off the Investment in the technology faster but also give people a exclusive model unlike much else on the road. This is an image vehicle not a model for $25k that leaves dozens in Walmart parking lots.
Hummers first run was good. Two things killed the brand. One the bankruptcy. Two the mistake of making it a brand and not a model under GMC. Both these issues are now gone and Hummer will thrive under GMC.
GMC has market equity in Denali that most MFGs could kill for. Now they will hold the Hummer name equity that will thrive much like Denali in profits.
If Cadillac could only do the same for their name and grow back the equity they squandered.
Beautifully said, I couldn’t agree more. You hit every point dead on, about Hummer, GMC, Denali, etc. Great comment.
I feel as if GMC’s good fortune is more due to timing, a captive audience because no other brand offers luxe trucks as a mission statement & lucky coincidence as opposed to a bold master plan.
Denali was a trim level that GM was wise enough to promote as a sort of sub brand minus unique designs during an era of cheap credit much like Fiat with Abarth. The same is true of AT4. Due to the buzz as well as being the only upmarket truck brand GMC, like Jeep, is one of the few domestics one ever sees in a drive way besides a German import. Hummer will only add to the transformation of GMC into the BMW of trucks.
Cadillac is quickly not seeming worth the billions of investment with it’s repeated failure to thrive. A few years ago a Citi analyst suggested Cadillac would be worth 20 Billion in a spin off. I doubt that but think Gam should sell the brand and, instead, use the Alpha and Omega technology for a new line up of Avenir trim Buick sedans. GMC has a pretty bright halo that could help high quality Avenir models find a home.
My only question is whether GMC trucks hurt Chevrolet sales. This is especially true with Ram breaking into second place.
Well all good ideas are about timing.
But in this case it is also about how a name is defined. Too often people think the name makes the vehicle when it is the vehicle makes the name.
People was something different and they want to be seen in something that defines quality or higher status that reflects on them.
It is like not just being the kid with Hot Wheels but being the kid with all the Hot Wheels.
Many buyers connect emotionally with products. Nike, Apple Ferrari. It is tough to create this name equity but GMC did. It has been a money maker too.
GMC sales don’t hurt GM as they retain the customer at a higher price.
At the end of the day Ram may sell more trucks but if you note often at steeper discounts. While GMC is adding sales at higher prices and adding more profit. Volume means little today vs profits.
GM went broke selling more vehicles vs profitable ones.
Oh yeah sign me up, I don’t need to see the vehicle or know the cost or performance lmao, I guess if money is no object than who cares about anything 🙄
What are we thinking on cost?
I would guess starting at $60k base to $100k for the 1000 HP version.
The high end could be a little less but not much.
People paid big prices for the H2 in the past and I expect the same here.
GM could have sold this as a Tahoe but not many would pay the higher price for the EV versions. With the Hummer they will. Even at lower volumes this will make back the investment leading to cheaper Chevy EV models.
Well four trims.
My guess is it will have two battery sizes (200KWh and 135KWh). AWD and RWD options.
The 1000hp tri-motor performance version will be expensive (guessing ~$80K USD).
But the smaller battery option RWD might start in the ~60’s.
Am I the only one that thinks this will take on the Rivian and Gladiator.
The Bed seems to be tiny and it doesn’t look Full Size to me at all.
If that is the case, the SUV version might be a Wrangler and Bronco competitor like I have been predicting.
Either way, I cannot wait to see this. GM has done a fantastic job keeping this close to the Vest.
I know that you may be trying to stay neutral with your topic, but please remember that the more controversial musings usually encourage awesome debate when argued with respect..and this IS your blog so allow your “take” rule here!
Your attitude should be taken as the standard when discussing this topic.
The Cadillac ELR sold only 2,958 units at roughly $90,000 adjusted for inflation, and was scrapped after a 2 year run because most feminized Hollywood types preferred imports and didn’t think GM was posh enough for their effeminate images.
Meanwhile the HUMMER H2 crushed sales figures at 153,026 units leaving EV models dead in the water while owners preferred the bulletproof V8 and still do today such as the new 401HP 6.6L V8 iron block work truck engine engineered for REAL men.
Will be interesting to see how this EV does against the Bronco and Wrangler/Gladiator, vehicles you can just gas and go.
Based on the low volume of internet comments, I would say this is going to need L8T/LT4/LT5 powertrain options and scrap the EV bits now unless you want to be a lab rat who bankrolls GM research, which has already been scrapped before.
Tire size needs to be rolling right on 40s as Bronco is getting 37s and I’m not rolling smaller than a Bronco, and no I do not want gimmicky baron steel skid plates, I want to be elevated over obstacles, not high centered on them, and ditch the sagging air shocks, real shocks like Kings only please.
Will this be yet another forgotten EV from GM like the ELR (what’s an ELR anyways after just 4 years since being scrapped most haven’t a clue ELR even existed) that nobody bought?
Stay tuned ladies and gentlemen, GM is about to get the wakeup call they deserve when the EV numbers drop and emergency plans kick into action, oh wait, there are no plans, let’s peruse internet comments, oh look, let’s copy the Bronco, maybe that will sell since Ford already won 230,000 preorders, will EV even get 3,000 preorders to top the dead ELR? LOL
My conclusion, buy the exact same vehicle as this EV which is the 2021 Yukon AT4 which includes a real mans V8 and save your money rather than waste it on throwaway EV gimmicks.
If you still have money left and you will since you bought a Yukon and not a wasteful EV, go ahead and supercharge your V8 and sit tight, long travel suspension components for all four wheels should come to market soon, allowing your new Yukon to become an off-road rocket ship that doesn’t leave you stranded in the desert after catastrophic battery burnout.
Still got to have the EV? Then go ahead and buy yourself two or three of them, that way you should have at least one up and charged so you can still make it to your appointments at the nail salon and poodle boutique?
It is very clever for GM to offer only a $100 for reservations, which will result in a lot of reservations. However, the reality is most of those reservation will not end up being actual sales. The truth is GM is never going to sell more than 10,000 of these vehicles annually. GM has never had an EV to break the annual 20,000 sales barrier. It is certainly not going to happen with the EV Hummer. This is a niche vehicle, which will be lucky to survive five years.
This is typical of the unwarranted hype we have seen with other GM EV’s which never sold. The bolt is still GM’s slowest selling passenger vehicle.
