First introduced with the 2019 GMC Sierra, the MultiPro tailgate offers enhanced usability, flexibility, and functionality via six different configurable positions. Following widespread critical acclaim, the MultiPro tailgate proved to be rather popular among buyers, and now, the latest 2021 GMC Sierra brings expanded availability for the feature.
Previously, the MultiPro tailgate was offered on 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation trim levels exclusively with the Crew Cab configuration, while 1500 SLT, 1500 AT4, and 1500 Denali trims equipped it as standard. Now, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 offers the MultiPro tailgate as an available option on SLE and Elevation trims without restrictions, while the feature continues as standard on SLT, AT4, and Denali trims. The base Sierra trim does not offer the feature on either model year.

SLE | N/A | Available |
Elevation | Available* | Available |

Meanwhile, the 2021 GMC Sierra HD extends the MultiPro tailgate feature as standard to SLE trims, whereas the previous 2020 GMC Sierra HD SLE offered the feature as an option in conjunction with certain packages. The base model Sierra HD continues to offer the feature with the Convenience Package, while the rest of the 2021 model lineup continues to offer it as standard.

As a reminder, the GMC Sierra MultiPro tailgate comes with six individual positions, including the standard primary gate opening, a primary gate load stop, a foldable inner gate, a full-width step, an inner gate load stop, and an inner gate work surface.
The feature has proven so popular, the GMC Sierra’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Silverado, will offer its own version of the feature called Multi-Flex.

You guys are still missing the most needed feature on the tailgate.
You need to add the POWER lower and raise feature.
RAM designers got it right, why can’t you guys.
I’m a GM guy, always have been, but that feature makes a switch very tempting.
You can tell when people are parroting other people’s comments and don’t actually own a truck. Who are you going to switch to? And you realize there’s no point in power down because of gravity, and all three brands already have dampened remote-release tailgates?
And the whole power feature is rather useless because still need a hand to work the remote or pushbutton, unlike those CUVs with the kicking sensor. Not to mention it adds thousands of dollars of repair cost to the most vulnerable and often stolen part of a real truck used for work.
To add to commonsense’s post, Ford only has a conventional 1-piece tailgate. Only the higher trim tailgates have remote release with dampening, that is, the cheap ones you have to lower manually. Ford will add power-up in 2021, exactly matching Chevrolet’s position since 2019.
Yea, but some people only pretend to care about tailgate tricks because GM says they should. Let’s not forget that GM made fun of Ford with the “Man step ” commercials. Now, all of the sudden tailgate tricks are all the rage according to GM.
Farmer here. We’ve been a Chevy family since long before I was even born. All of our trucks are actually used as work trucks. I’m happy that Chevy has the power open/close feature for their tailgate. It would be really nice to be able to drive to one of our orchards, lower the tailgate down from inside the truck and then whistle so that the dogs jump out. Afterwards when I call them back, they can just jump back in (they know to sit in the front side of the bed as close as they can to me) and then I could close it again from inside or as I’m walking up to it.
Is this a much needed feature? Nope. It’s absolutely a gimmick that happens to be kinda neat and I want it because I’m a dork. But aside from that one niche example, I can’t think of many other situations where I would need that.
I suppose my point of view is that if the Chevy has it, the GMC should also, but I wouldn’t turn down a good Sierra over that one thing alone.
When I ordered my Camaro I had to really think about if I wanted the auto JUST for the remote start feature. In the end that one thing wasn’t enough of a reason for me to skip the manual, and I’m very happy now that I didn’t let it change my mind. I believe I would feel the same way about the power open/close tailgate.
The thing is that the Sierra line was supposed to be the Cadillac of trucks, now the two are nearly the same thing
This is very good
What are you going to start making a damn 2021 trucks tired of hearing about everything I was told mid-September nothing out there are no brochures down on the dealers don’t know nothing all I keep saying is they were on a 2020 and wait to see what happens if people are screwed up
In the first weeks of October dealers should start to get the 2021 HD trucks. I’m not sure about the Light Duty trucks, our shop only builds HD’s.
does this mean for someone who has an elevation crewcab 2020, but not the multipro tailgate can expect a multipro tailgate kit from GM to be purchased and installed?
The tale gate is a peace of junk I’ve had my truck for three weeks and the tale gate is malfunctioning it opens on its own and guess what? Dropped on the trailer jack and left a nice dent 😡
I have always lived by what my father said; (Bham’s first Harley dealership owner)
‘…have a Ford truck, a Chevy car, and a Harley-Davidson son and you have a start on a happy life!’
I have had that but now I traded my Ford King Ranch for my first diesel truck.
A GMC Sierra 2500 HD, 2005 LLY with 80K miles!
Great truck but I wish things such as this tailgate would have a kit to upgrade my year truck.
Great to be here guys and hopefully you will see more of me.
