2021 Chevrolet Silverado Introduces New Multi-Flex Tailgate: Video

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado introduces a new configurable Multi-Flex tailgate system, which operates in the exact same fashion as the MultiPro tailgate offered on the GMC Sierra.

The Multi-Flex tailgate will be offered as a late availability option on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, so those hoping to dash to the nearest dealer and place an order for a Multi-Flex-equipped pickup will have to wait until early next year to do so. This confirms our previous report indicating a version of MultiPro would arrive on the Silverado and that it would be available for the 2021i (2021 interim) model year. GM didn’t keep the secret very well, however, with spy photographers catching Silverado prototypes equipped with the innovative multi-position tailgate testing in Michigan.

Just like the MultiPro, the Multi-Flex tailgate has six different positions. The example images below show a GMC Sierra MultiPro tailgate, but don’t be confused – the Chevrolet Silverado Multi-Flex system will work in the exact same way. Let’s take a look at the six different positions the tailgate offers:

1. Primary Gate

The regular position with the tailgate lowered.

2. Primary Gate Load Stop

The load stop adds an extra layer of convenience to the tailgate, helping to prevent items from sliding out of the box when driving.

3. Foldable Inner Gate For Easy Access

The inner gate of the tailgate can also fold down, giving the user easy access to the bed when loading and unloading items.

4. Full-Width Step

With a maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds (170 kg), the tailgate’s inner step gives the user an easy way to step up into the truck’s box. Two buttons on the tailgate handle allow the inner gate to release easily.

5. Inner Gate Load Stop

There’s also an additional load stop in the inner gate, which can help prevent second-tier items from sliding out of the box.

6. Inner Gate Work Surface

This the inner gate opened, the tailgate serves as a convenient work surface. This could also be useful when tailgating or hanging around the truck with friends.

General Motors will provide more updates on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado on September 21st, at which point we’ll also likely get more information on the Multi-Flex tailgate and which Silverado trim levels it will be available on. The video embedded below also provides a more in-depth look at the Multi-Flex tailgate system.

  1. Are they going to expand the availability of the power open and close gate over to GMC then? Or are they going to roll both features into each other?

  2. So Chevy gets this but GMC doesn’t get the auto tailgate? The wrong executive dropped out, the marketing executive needs to get axed

  3. As usual, both are the same truck. Look guys, if you like the GMC better then fine. Just don’t be delusional enough to think it’s any better than your neighbors Chevy.

  4. The bowtie is very much welcomed. Glad to have another option aside from the CHEVROLET lettering stamped into the metal!

  5. Oh wow! That looks SOOO much better than that godawful extruded rectangle with the “CHEVROLET” lettering. This is so much cleaner looking, even with the seam. It’s worth paying the extra for this tailgate just to clean up the rear-end of the Chevy.

  6. LOL! They are both built in the same plant!

  7. The roof line and the 3rd brake light are kind of ugly.

  9. I have a 3500HD Silverado High Country on the way. I ordered from the dealer in Buellton CA in mid March. When I placed the order their was no mention of a regular or muti task tailgate. My question is, am I going to get the muti task tailgate for the close to 80K I’m spending and how do I find out?
