Currently, the Chevy Silverado offers several tailgate options. All tailgates come in the form of a regular a regular drop-down unit, while a multi-function unit is notably absent. But following the debut of the innovative MultiPro tailgate on the all-new 2019 GMC Sierra, it’s become increasingly clear that Chevrolet will offer its own version of the feature on the Chevy Silverado. Now, GM Authority has learned how the new tailgate will make its way to market.
First and foremost, Chevy’s new multi-function tailgate could wear the Multi-Flex brand (potentially spelled MultiFlex). That name is the front-runner among a handful of names being considered by the Bow Tie brand. It’s also worth noting that GM initially applied the Multi-Flex name in 2003, albeit in conjunction for naming seats for motor vehicles.
GM Authority can also report that the new Chevy Silverado tailgate feature – whatever it may be called – is planned for the 2021i (2021 interim) model year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic could end up pushing those launch plans back to the 2022 model year to coincide with the Silverado’s mid-cycle refresh, which will also deliver a new interior – as originally reported by GMA.
We’ve covered the topic of a multi-function Silverado tailgate at length over the last few years, showing you various Chevy Silverado HD prototypes testing with Chevrolet’s version of the MultiPro tailgate. We also noticed the feature being mentioned in the 2020 Silverado owner’s manual, despite the feature not being offered for the 2020 model year.
GM Authority has also heard whispers that the Chevy Multi-Flex tailgate could be differentiated from the GMC MultiPro via a new feature or position. However, it’s also possible that the MultiPro tailgate will be updated to have the new feature, thereby bringing feature parity to both tailgates.
As a reminder, the MultiPro tailgate offers flexibility and added functionality via six configurations, including second-tier loading, load-stop, a standing workstation, a drop-down center piece for easier access to the box, and a box step. It also has the ability to integrate a set of Kicker speakers with Bluetooth function.
Rest assured, we’ll have plenty more about the Chevy Silverado’s upcoming Multi-Flex tailgate. In the meantime, make sure to subscribe to GM Authority for Silverado news, Chevrolet news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Marketing at its worse is GM! Just offer it already, it’s 2 years since it debuted so calling it another name isn’t going to change anything unless you distinguish it from the other one which we all know isn’t going to happen.
With all due respect, you don’t know jack $hit.
And did you miss this piece?
“GM Authority has also heard whispers that the Chevy Multi-Flex tailgate could be differentiated from the GMC MultiPro via a new feature or position.”
chuck.. “However, it’s also possible that the MultiPro tailgate will be updated to have the new feature, thereby bringing feature parity to both tailgates.” guess u missed this piece. In effect, both tailgates will be the same, with different names. So with all due respect, you don’t know jack $hit.
Agreed, Ford has had a tailgate step for over a decade. This is old hat
Obviously you missed the part that said even if it has a new feature it may be on the updated other model ….which means GMC!
Obviously you missed the part that GMC brands and markets everything as Pro, and Chevy… does not.
Also its smart to have a GMC lead with an exclusive feature before going down market.
Downmarket? Please. For decades GMC’s were nothing but Chevy trucks with Chevy engines wearing a different grill on the front so they could be sold at Buick/Olds/Pontiac dealers. Now they make the sheet metal stampings different for each truck. Big deal. They’re still literally the same exact thing. Renaming the tailgate is stupid. Every Chevy guy on the planet knows the multipro tailgate is a multipro tailgate. Just leave it at that. Calling it multiflex sounds cheesy. They don’t change the engine names or any other common part for each truck. There’s not need to do it here either. GMC is ‘like a pro’, ‘pro grade’. yay. So Chevy is ‘like a flex’, ‘flex grade’ now I guess? GM’s marketing is horrible.
So Ford introduces a tailgate with multiple features over a decade ago. Then GM launches a commercial during NFL games with Howie Long making fun of it. Then in 2019 GM launches a commercial during the superbowl claiming to have the best multi feature tailgate. Pepperidge Farms remembers. I didn’t have any need for it when Ford did it and I am not going to pretend to want it just because GM decided to do it. I refuse to be a diehard loyalist that wants something because GM says I should want it.
If you’ve seen them side by side like I have, GMC’s offering makes Ford’s look like it was an afterthought.
Who cares? The Rams 12 inch screen makes the screen in my truck look tiny. The point is, if I had wanted tailgate features I would have switched to Ford years ago.
Hopefully the issue of hitting your tow ball has been resolved. Very shifty if you still have to remove the ball to drop the gate
Can’t believe people are still complaining about this with the tow ball/hitch, geez….REMOVE IT, problem solved, you shouldn’t running around with it in anyway unless you’re towing!
GM always has atrocious marketing! I’m not sure why they always come up with good ideas and never market them. Envoy XUV, Quadrasteer, Duramax multipro gate… ok I know nobody liked the XUV but it was still an innovative idea. That they didn’t market at all. Quadraseer is such a good idea it should just be the way trucks are built in 2020. I realize that the duramax trucks sell pretty well but when every Dodge or Ford I see is a Cummins or Powerstroke and over half the Chevys I see are worthless vortecs… it’s obviously a lack of marketing. And I think the only reason the multipro gate is selling is because dealers are ordering trucks with it. So if people want a truck same day they’re stuck with it. I think it’s a good idea. But I can see some old guys saying “just more stuff to break”…
And to everyone whining about Ford’s “multifunction gate… Do you mean the gate with the step…? That’s not even remotely similar to the multipro gate… Just stop it… And that’s one form of marketing GM DOES excel at. Smear campaigns! I agree that the stupid step in the gate was just silly “man step”. That said my work truck is an f150 and I use the step every time I get into the bed!
