The GM Authority Take

For the second consecutive month, Chevrolet Korea sales recorded a healthy increase in April – right in the middle of the COVID-19 outbreak. Though the 4.2 percent increase last month is less than the 40 percent gain registered in March, the gain still represents an important achievement for Chevrolet and GM Korea, which have been able to minimize the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, in contrast to the vast majority of its competitors.

In addition, year-to-date sales so far this year are significantly higher than those of the same period in 2019.

This bowtie brand’s positive sales trend in South Korea is due to the all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer, which went on sale mid-February. The small crossover became Chevrolet’s second best-selling model in April, just behind the Spark, which traditionally reigns supreme as Chevy’s best-selling model in Korea.

The Trailblazer was Chevrolet’s best-seller in March, and would have likely earned the title in April had it not been for certain production setbacks related to COVID-19. The production impacts did not impact the Spark as much as the Trailblazer, since dealers had a higher level of in-stock Spark inventory compared to the Trailblazer.

It’s also worth noting that combined sales of Chevrolet’s imported models – the Bolt EV, Camaro, Colorado, Equinox and Traverse – exceeded 1,000 units in April for the seventh consecutive month. Specifically, sales of the five imported Chevys  totaled 1,088 sales during the month, representing about 16 percent of overall sales volume.
