The GM Authority Take

Cruze sales didn’t fare well in September, with the model seeing the second-highest year-over-year slump in its segment after the Hyundai Elantra (not counting the discontinued Dodge Dart).

The performance places the Cruze in fourth place in its competitive set in terms of overall September sales volume, behind the Honda Civic (up 26 percent to 35,452 units), Toyota Corolla (up 1.5 percent to 32,769 units) and Nissan Sentra (up 40 percent to 19,128 units). In effect, the Civic and Corolla outsold the Cruze by more than a two-to-one ratio.

The Cruze did, however, outsell the remaining segment contenders including the Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta and Golf, Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Subaru Impreza, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer, and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart.

We attribute the slumping Cruze sales performance during September to the following factors:

  1. An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
  2. An extremely strong launch for and market reaction to the new Honda Civic
  3. Aggressive fleet sales for Nissan Sentra, a market that GM/Chevrolet has strategically decided to avoid in the U.S.

About Chevrolet Cruze

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback and Sedan Redline editions

The Chevrolet Cruze is a range of compact passenger cars currently consisting of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. It slots above the Chevrolet Spark city car and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and below the midsize Chevrolet Malibu and full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the second generation of the Cruze nameplate. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt and Buick Verano (in China).

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen model is an all-new vehicle that is slightly larger, sleeker and more modern. The first-generation Cruze family was produced in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, but only the sedan was available in North America. By comparison, the second-generation model is available as a sedan and hatchback. Though a wagon variant of the second-gen model was never produced, the hatchback model was made available in North America.

The Chevrolet Cruze sedan is built by GM USA at the GM Lordstown factory while the Cruze hatchback is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe factory.

  1. What I always wanted to know is what is the break point number? The number GM must sell of a certain car to make a profit?

GM sold 19,000 cruzes and what would be the profit Mark? 10k, 15k, 20k?

  2. The Cruze needs a performance variant to improve its image like the Civic, and why not a break.

  3. Civic (hit) and Mazda 3 (commercial failure) are the industry benchmarks with Corolla being a favorite due to reliability. Cruze being 3ed in retail, 4th in total sales isn’t too bad.
I do wonder if Astra/Verano with Chevrolet corporate face would have been a stronger seller? GM must find a way to serious aim for first place in every segment.
The sales crown isn’t always about quality and design. Both Mazda3 and (don’t laugh) Dart are good cars that few customers want.

  4. I don’t think GM has to aim for 40k a month! What will keep the company producing profits with this car!

People forget Chevy builds 5 cars! Most manufactures don’t build that many.

Plus GM has different versions of Buicks and Cadillacs so the numbers are not created equal

  5. My wifey had to rent a car last week and got herself a brand new red Cruze. She was particularly impressed but found the stop/start thing a big HMMMmmm.

    1. I don’t understand why people have a problem with start/stop feature? It doesn’t negitively effect how the car drives, the car just shuts off when it is stopped!

      1. Apparently the A.C. goes off or whines down as well… which is something I hadn’t heard. She got used to it but she didn’t love it.

        Reply
        1. This is not correct. The engine will stay on with the a.c. on as long as the car is not cold inside. If the a.c. has cooled down the car then the engine will shut off but on a hot day the engine will stay on!

          Reply
          1. Pay attention. I’m not talking about whether the engine stays on or not. She reported the A.C. goes off at stoplights… which felt weird for her.

            1. Not sure you understand!

  6. Take a few minutes and check out the European version of the Chevy Cruz Wagon. Had GM built that version instead of the 5-door they did …. sales would have been great. GM, Ford, others … we want the humble station wagon, not another SUV that can be hard to get in an out of when you’re 59+. Or has the demographic that is buying KIA Souls escaped you?

    Reply
  7. Yes the cruze in my opinion need a station wagon and more potent engines. The old Cruze had a 2.0 diesel engine that produce 165hp in global market. GM China just show a 1.3T engine with 160 HP more powerful than the 1.4T and approaches the output of the 1.5T. So there is something odd.

  8. Give it some more oomph and handling prowess and it would do better.

  9. Keep it simple. Auto Stop adds to the price of the car and buyers have figured out, that it is just another system to break and result in expensive repair bills, that will more than wipe out any gas savings.

    1. So you just expect cars to stay the same way for decades? Do you like power brakes? Disc brakes? Power steering? Anti lock brakes? A/C? Rack n pinion? Fuel injection? Tilt wheel?

These are all items at the time were new to the buyer and some people had the same attitude as you saying what do I need that for! Only to find out years later that the system is very useful and a industry must in today’s standards!

If it were up to people like you we would still be riding around in a horse and buggy! Because those people back in the early 1900’s said the same thing why do I need a car when I have my buggy and my horse.

Those people ended up looking like fools and the same will happen in today’s world!

  10. No, cars should change for the better. Power brakes and steering are necessary for the weak and elderly. Anti lock brakes are for safety, and yes I have had problems with the ABS systems on my vehicles. AC is for comfort. Tilt wheel because people come in different sizes. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid ) has been around for years.I would be quite happy with manual crank windows, give the number of problems members of my family have had with them over the years. (Wires flex and break as the door opens and closes, the switch breaks, or the window motor burns out) . IF there is no Auto Stop , it can’t break down and required costly repairs that will eat up any gas savings. With the cost of new cars, I don’t know how long you keep your vehicles, but the money spent on the Auto Stop system could have been spent on better brake line ,gas , and transmission line materials that exist, but cost more, and will not rust out. It is good that GM has gone to plastic gas tanks, and better muffler and exhaust pipe materials that don’t need to be replaced every 2-3 years. I know the government is forcing the car manufacturers to get better gas mileage, forcing these kinds of systems. Energy is also required to make the Auto Stop components.
