The GM Authority Take

Cruze sales didn’t fare so well in August, with the model seeing the second-highest year-over-year slump in the segment after the Hyundai Elantra.

The performance places the Cruze in third place in its segment in terms of overall sales volume in August, behind the Honda Civic (up 11.2 percent to 36,482 units) and Toyota Corolla (down 14 percent to 27,644 units). In effect, the Civic outsold the Cruze by more than a two-to-one ratio.

The Cruze did, however, outsell the remaining segment contenders including the Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta and Golf, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Subaru Impreza, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer, and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart.

We attribute the slumping Cruze performance during August to the following two factors:

  1. An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
  2. A very extremely strong launch for and market reaction to the new Honda Civic

About Chevrolet Cruze

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback and Sedan Redline editions

The Chevrolet Cruze is a range of compact cars currently consisting of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. It slots above the Chevrolet Spark city car and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and below the midsize Chevrolet Malibu and full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the second generation of the Cruze nameplate. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt and Buick Verano (in China).

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen model is an all-new vehicle that is slightly larger, sleeker and more modern. The first-generation Cruze family was produced in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, but only the sedan was available in North America. By comparison, the second-generation model is available as a sedan and hatchback. Though a wagon variant of the second-gen model was never produced, the hatchback model was made available in North America.

The Chevrolet Cruze sedan is built by GM USA at the GM Lordstown factory while the Cruze hatchback is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe factory.

  1. Numbers do lie as while Chevrolet Cruze sales might be down from a year ago, the 16,500 units sold for August 2017 is actually better than the prior two months earlier as Chevrolet only sole 12,828 for June-2017 and 12,278 for July-2017; one has to think that there could be a big jump in a month or so after Texas recovers from Harvey and Florida from Hurricane Irma.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see a breakdown of how many of the Cruze Sport-back that Chevrolet sells and whether gender makes a difference.

    1. The split is between 80-20 and 70-30 sedan-hatch for the year…

  3. Just another tell tale sign of the decline in the car segment.

The market has shifted as it has not done for decades.

The Trax and Nox have done more damage here vs Honda. Most Honda buyers were Honda owners before they bought he new one.

  4. Chevrolet has to focus on how take market parts of the Civic and Corolla to be number one in this segment.

  5. Maybe some consumers are getting pissed off that you are paying more money for less car each successive model year.
The 2016 had a glove box light, dual rear map pockets and mileage figures of 30/42. The 2017 started off with a glove box light but only one rear map pocket on the LT and LTZ and mileage decreased to 30/40 or 29/39 on the Premier. Now for 2018 the glove box light is gone, there is only one map pocket on the LT and Premier and mileage drops yet again to 29/40 on the LT. Also stop start is STILL non defeatable. The option packages still lack features that other companies give you for less money, you have to pony up to the priciest Premier trim to get such things as a leather wheel or certain safety items and Chevy utterly refuses to offer a performance variant on any trim level Cruze.

Some of these things are minor. Some are irritating. But the biggest shocker of all time are the pair of leftover 2017 Premier sedans and Hatchback sitting at my local dealer with MSRP’s over 30K! They continue to over price these cars by 3-4K and the market knows this. It will take another big round of rebates to get anybody in the door to move these out.
