The GM Authority Take

At 11 percent year-over-year decline makes the Sierra the truck with the second-highest July sales decrease in the U.S. Its platform mate — the Chevy Silverado — took the crown for the highest decrease in sales (with a 15.05 percent year-over-year decline). Both events are highly worrying, as Ford F-Series sales gained 5.8 percent while Ram pickup sales were roughly flat. As such, it is concerning to see Sierra sales drop in July as well as in the previous five months, given the numerous incentives on the Sierra lineup.

As in months past, we assert that the ongoing decrease in Sierra deliveries is the result of the vehicle being the oldest in the full-size truck segment, decreasing its competitiveness and, therein, overall appeal to consumers. A decrease in sales of vehicles on GM’s K2 platform, as is the case for the Sierra, can lead to a decrease in GM profit, which are highly dependent on U.S. sales of high-margin pickup trucks and SUVs. That said, the The General’s profitability might not take a hit if it is selling less of these vehicles at a higher profit margin, and the Sierra has the highest Average Transaction Prices (ATPs) in the full-size pickup segment.

Whatever the case may be, a replacement for the current K2-based Sierra is expected to launch for the 2019 model year. See more info on the 2019 GMC Sierra.

  1. Might have to do with perceived inferior technology than the F150 has, for the same price. Ram being from 2008 has far older bones than the 2014 K2XX twins, but their price reflects that. GM is correct to go head to head with the F150, as they always have but the 2016 refresh doesn’t seem to be carrying the mail. Also many gm buyers know the next gen is coming soon. Also I’m not a fan of the “Like a pro” campaign, professional grade was better imo.

    1. I would tend to agree with the latter part of your statement. I think there are a lot of GM buyers waiting to get their hands on the nex gen Sierra/Silverado. I was seriously considering doing the same, but if they offer deep discounts this fall, then I will likely get a new Sierra then.
