We’re not sure how Wayne Rooney feels about losing his Audi for a Chevrolet, but hopefully it doesn’t hinder his play. As first reported yesterday, GM through Chevrolet has officially announced a five-year sponsorship with English Premier League soccer (futbol/football) team Manchester United.
The agreement also spawns the Chevrolet China Cup, which will feature matches in Shanghai and a still-to-be-named Chinese city. The Chevrolet China Cup is part of Manchester United’s Tour 2012, which is also heavily sponsored by logistics company DHL. The matches in China will be played against Shanghai Shenhua FC and another team, which will be announced at a later date. Manchester United will be playing in China for the first time since 2009 and third time overall, and is doing so because of the huge fanbase over there.
Not only has Chevrolet signed a five-year sponsorship with Manchester United, but it’s also committed itself to the One World Futbol Project, an organization focused on sustaining play for youth in impoverished regions. Chevrolet’s support includes a pledge to donate 1.5 million One World Futbols — a soccer ball designed to be “virtually indestructible” — over the next three years to organizations working with youth living in war-stricken zones, refugee camps, disaster areas and other disadvantaged communities. Chevrolet is the first corporate sponsor of the One World Futbol Project, which has reached out to roughly 527,000 people in 137 countries.

As I understand it, ManU are the Yankee’s of English footbal.
Lots of merch, lots of obnoxious fans, lots of money, fiercely hated by everyone.
Manchester United is an excellent team, making excellent football games in the past, and years to come. And Chevrolet makes awesome, so it’ll be interesting to see this partnership play out. I will also be fun to see ManU in China playing some of their teams.
