The Buick Enclave posted the highest percentage increase in sales volume in its segment in the United States in the second quarter. The performance places the full-size CUV in first place (out of five) in its competitive set in terms of cumulative sales volume, ahead of the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60, Volvo XC90 (see Volvo XC90 sales) and Audi Q7 (see Audi Q7 sales).

The premium three-row crossover segment expanded 7 percent in Q2 2018 and 11.3 percent in the first six months of 2018.

The GM Authority Take

The Enclave’s class-leading sales performance is the result of various factors coming together at just the right time, and GM delivering on all levels, including product, marketing as well as execution at the retail level. The product is, arguably, the most important of these elements, and the Enclave hits the mark thanks to a very good, highly attractive offering that has just the right mix of style, comfort, technology, and value. Sure, it doesn’t use the latest GM V-6 engine family, but consumers don’t seem to mind or notice this qualitative downside whatsoever. The market’s ongoing love affair with crossovers is a significant contributing factor.

Going forward, we expect Enclave to continue leading its segment from a sales volume standpoint due to the following factors:

  1. An new, highly-competitive second-generation model that is attracting new customers
  2. A value-laden vehicle that presents an attractive price point, which is about $10,000 more affordable than more expensive rivals such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 – which are not only smaller, but also offer less in terms of features and therefore value
  3. An ongoing change in market vehicle buying dynamics that sees car buyers continue switching to crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) from other vehicle types like sedans

However, the full-size Buick CUV will soon face strong competition from the Lexus RX350L – an upcoming three-row variant of the best-selling Lexus RX, which dominates its segment from a sales standpoint.

About Buick Enclave

The Buick Enclave is a premium full-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It is the biggest Buick crossover currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Buick Encore and compact Buick Envision.

The first generation Enclave was introduced for the 2009 model year to replace the Buick Rendezvous. It rode on the GM Lambda platform and was discontinued in 2017. The current, second-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the extended-length GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Traverse. A shorter variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5.

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen Enclave is an all-new vehicle that is larger, lighter, sleeker and more modern. It also introduces new trim levels, including the range-topping Enclave Avenir.

For the 2019 model year, the Enclave receives a new FWD Preferred (1SD) equipment group, the addition of the automatic function for the heated steering wheel and front row heated seats, as well as a new Ebony with Ebony interior accents interior.

The Buick Enclave is built at the GM Delta Lansing Township factory in Michigan operated by GM USA. It is currently the only plant that builds the vehicle alongside the second-gen Chevy Traverse.

  1. The 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir is a modern interpretation of what a luxury sedan should be, comfort with all the amenities plus the bonus of passenger capacity for 7 together in a package that is still affordable with a base price of about $53K.

    1. Imagine that, an American-made vehicle being bought by Americans in droves, supporting American communities in the process. Maybe those Chinese tariffs are starting to bite.

A truly excellent vehicle that checks all the right boxes. It feels good to see an American success story once again.

  2. I’m pretty sure Lexus will only count the RXL sales into one instead of separate them. Another point is I wonder if this still includes the leftover first gen sales

    1. Yup, Lexus will likely not break out sales of the RX from the RX-L, and count both models as the RX family, much like Nissan doesn’t split out Rogue Sport from Rogue.

There are very few first-gen Enclaves remaining… I wasn’t able to find any real units at present. Don’t think the situation was much different from April thru June, at least not enough to impact the sales volume more than a hundred units.

  3. Great vehicle with one big caveat. A bit insulting GM doesn’t fit the LGX V-6 under the hood of a $60,000.00 crossover

    1. And no one cares like Alex said. The engine is good enough. This isn’t the latest generation of a performance car…

  4. Our Enclave sales are up exactly 100% YTD over 2017.

We’re consistently winning sales against the Lexus RX and Infiniti QX60, which is surprising to me. Usually, those customers tend to stay with those brands for the recognition. That’s just how good the new Enclave is.
