  2. Malibu is in Chrysler 200 territory. We may be entering a time when only certain automakers produce midsizers.
    This makes me sad.

    1. Too short of a time frame (one month) to make any informative conclusions.

The Malibu saw a 17% increase in sales volume during the entire 2016 calendar year… hardly sad:

Meanwhile, the segment sales volume leader — the Toyota Camry — saw sales drop 25 percent to 20,313 units. All in all, the Camry has traditionally outsold the Malibu at a 2:1 ratio, so things seem normal as the crossover craze continues.

      1. I’ll add an general anecdotal story that my brother told me from at a Subie dealer . He overheard a salesman talking with a 20-something young woman. She was interested in the Crosstrek or Forester. The salesman asked if she was interested in eyesight. She said that yeah, I want to be able to see out of it.

My interpretation is this person is not invested in the process, and is likely to rip herself off. Even if discount ads open her mind away from the Subaru cult, she won’t have the tolerance to sift through 4 or 5 different qualifying rules on top of the option packaging.

    2. I looked at the Cruze and Malibu site’s build & price and then dealer cars on cars.com and this system of selling cars is retarded.

The option packages are illogically grouped trying to squeeze every last ATP $. So very few actually order a car the way they want. And later dealers basically bribe us (discounting) to settle for a percentage of the car we could have ordered. No one really wins.

Why is the Malibu Premier sunroof option packaged with 19″ wheels (or anything)? Why aren’t the better headlights and driver awareness standard on Premier? To be fair the Malibu is organized much better than Cruze.

Why are there so many options to the Cruze Premier? It should be very near loaded. Why is leather not on LT? Sunroofs are stupidly packaged with interior features. Ground effects and spoiler are offered that show up on no dealer cars. RS could be a multi-trim decent performance package.

The point is, this is a factor that erodes brand loyalty. It certainly doesn’t help draw in anyone new and that is necessary.

      1. You are not alone in the “What the hell is Chevy doing with these stupid packaged options club?” I totally understand them putting vehicles on the lots packaged with the options people are choosing most often, but they should really open up the order books like they used too for those who want to build a vehicle most suited to their needs. There are those consumers who would be willing to wait for that car to be built for them.

        1. If they did it that way, they would also have a better idea for what should go on the lots in the first place. I’d guess dealers like to stock optioned up, higher margin cars and have room to bargain down.
