Chevrolet Camaro Outsells Ford Mustang For 2012, Just Barely

The sales performance of the Chevrolet Camaro may not have been as great in 2012 as it was in 2011, as sales were down 4.4 percent year-over-year. But fans of Chevy’s pony car can still brag that the Camaro outsold its arch-rival, the Mustang, in the same time period.

Selling 84,391 units, the Camaro just edged the Ford Mustang, which sold 82,995 units, according to sales data from both automakers. This marks the third straight year that the Camaro has come out on top in the pony car sales war, to say nothing about how it’s spanked the competition in performance comparison testing.

Anybody want to place bets as to whether 2013 will mark a four-peat for the Chevy?

    1. It’s strong and good in a straight line. People still buy Corvette with leaf springs, so…

95% Percent of people buying a Mustang have no idea what the difference is between IRS and live axle

      1. R U saying Mustang buyers are stoopid? I think the Mustang was THE pony car to have from 05 to 09, but once the IRS Camaro & Challenger came out, I don’t see much value in the Mustang.

        1. I don’t think Mustang buyers are stupid. The Pony Car wars are not all about drag times, they are also a lot about street cred and good looks. There is no denying that the Mustang is a damn sexy beast. As antiquated as that live rear axle may seem, Ford has done a remarkable job of keeping it under control. There is still a lot of value in the Mustang and it would be wise of both GM and Chrysler (particularly the latter) to watch what Ford does next. 2013 will be a hell of a ride…

          1. I own an 07 Mustang and love it, but I think Ford screwed up the back end in ’10, intentionally making it look smaller while the Camaro (and Challenger) look big. From what I keep hearing about the EVEN SMALLER Mustang coming, it doesn’t sound good. They should NOT worry about CAFE for pony & luxury cars, that should be a big worry for everything else. Sounds like the Mustang II disaster is coming back.

  2. 2015 will be a very interesting rear for the Camaro and Mustang wars, and to a lesser extent the new ‘Dodge’ or SRT Barracuda on the Alfa/Maserati platform

  3. I have a habit at always looking at who is Driving when I see a mustang. I find that 90% of the time its a woman. So that must tell you something ,mind you that does not include GT500s which are usually drivin by men from what i have seen.

  4. it is none of that…the only thing making the camaro sell more is style….yes style people not history, not HP figures……the ford mustang even though highly updated for the 2013 model year still looks older and less masucline the camaro…and same will be said when the camaro move onto the alpha platform and turns into a real beast

  5. Back in 2002 when both F-bodies, Camaro and Firebird were outsold by the Mustang, GM executives killed the Firebird and put the Camaro to sleep (some people said that it was only a pause)

Who would’ve thought that 10 years later, the muscle car would defeat the pony car for the 3rd year in a row? Not me.

  6. By keeping the Camaro out of the market for a number of years there was a build up of demand for it from die hard Chevy fans. By keeping the Camaro off the market sales were bound to skyrocket when it came back. Now that it’s been selling for years, the hunger for the Camaro has been satiated and demand for the car is beginning to wane. It will be no surprise to see the Camaro’s sales numbers fall even further in the coming years. This is not to say that the Camaro is not a fine automobile and a true competitor for the Mustang. The fight for supremacy will keep making these cars better and better.
