2024 GMC Sierra EV Recalled For Noncompliant Turn Signal Lights

General Motors has initiated a recall for certain affected units of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV pickup, which may have front turn signals that are not in compliance with federal safety standards.

According to GM, in late August, “a GM engineer submitted this issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program following notification from GM’s supplier that the calculated photometric intensity ratio for the combination front turn signal lamp and parking lamp may not meet FMVSS 108 requirements,” resulting in a GM investigation of the GMC Sierra EV.

The problem: the front turn signal lamps of affected 2024 GMC Sierra EV trucks may not differ enough in brightness (photometric intensity ratio) from the parking lamps, making it difficult for other drivers to see that the Sierra EV’s driver is signaling a turn.

The hazards: if other drivers on the road are unable to see the turn signal lamps because they blend in with the parking lamps in brightness, these drivers may be caught unawares by the Sierra EV turning, increasing the risk of a collision or other accident.

The fix: per GM noncompliance recall number N242474560, certified GM repair technicians are instructed to replace the headlamp multipurpose LED driver (MLD) module with a new unit offering the correct brightness, making the activated turn signal properly visible to other drivers.

Affected components: headlamp multipurpose LED driver module.

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 1,962 Sierra EV units are affected by the issue. No units made after September 9th, 2024 are affected, as this is the date when The General began using new headlight assemblies with modules providing the proper photometric intensity.

  1. This wouldn’t have happened if it had the diesel in it.

    1. What does the powertrain have to do with the turn signals? They’re all run off a 12V Vehicle Integration Platform (VIP) architecture that is shared between ICE and EV GM vehicles.
Every new vehicle or major refresh since the CT5 launch is on this architecture.

          1. Nothing gets everyone riled up like articles featuring BEVs as the anti-BEV sentiment is quite high on this site. Those who hate them most will comment most frequently as if they can change anything. The fact is BEVs are increasing every quarter despite the overall US market contracting and GM is increasing its share of the growing BEV market. This also helps its CAFE which allows them to sell more profit driving SUVs and trucks with lower fuel economy and avoiding fines. I don’t agree with the mandates or strict CAFE standards, but that is the hand GM is dealt and they’re doing better than all other legacy automakers except Hyundai-Kia.

  2. No worries, how many have sold, 5?

    1. 5? Try all of them. Reservations filled up within 15 min when it was opened up last year on the ’24’s Call a dealer and ask. You sir are clearly an EV hater and do not like innovation and change.

      1. Reservations mean very little, show me sales/deliveries. I see none on the road.

        1. I saw one on the road in Houston, TX last week. It was a Harris County (government) vehicle and the WT model. Looked real good. Don’t understand how the county justified the expenditure verses an ICE pickup. Then again it was following a brand-new high-end watering truck around. They were watering green movement trees planted the previous year.

      2. Now I get it…so when I go to my local GMC dealer and I see 3 Denali EV’s sitting on the front row of the dealership, those are already sold? The salesman will tell me that those can’t be bought because all of the reservations were filled?

        You sir, are hilarious!

        1. Call them and ask; none are available around here. (upper Midwest) I’ve called several of the dealerships around here that have them advertised they all say I can get on the list for a ’25 build. Sold units show up as inventory on gm and dealer websites.
Now the Silverado EV you can find for sale at dealerships. Just not the Seirra EV

        1. I own both an ICE 23 Sierra Denali Ultimate and a Mach-E GT EV. EVs offer more power, instant torque, and are much cheaper and smoother to drive, costing about 4 cents/mile. For a car with 480 hp and 640 ft-lbs of torque you can’t beat this with ice.
EV’s are a sensible choice unless you’re driving several hundred miles a day or lack the capability to charge at home.

I don’t understand why all the hate towards EV’s? Don’t like them, don’t buy one?

A 120 years ago people hated the model A and spoke of it just like all the EV haters of today and now look where we’re at.

  3. There are a lot of turn signals on new cars that are difficult to see. Either because they are placed too close to the already too stupidly bright headlights or they have a tiny yellow bulb behind a clear lens, unlike earlier models with reflective lenses that actually magnified the turn light. More steps backwards.

  5. SADLY GM ENGINEERS DON’T CATCH ANYTHING TILL IT CAUSES A PROBLEM OR AN ACCIDENT. REALLY SAD. PUT THE TURN SIGNALS WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM AND NOT NEAR THE HEADLIGHTS. REAL SMART GUYS. OLDER VEHICLES HAD TURN SIGNALS IN BUMPERS AND HEAD LIGHTS UP HIGH. SOME TURN SIGNALS ARE USELESS.YOU CANNOT SEE THEM IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEADLIGHT. SOME ! NOT ALL.
