General Motors has just announced a new investment for the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil, the company’s most modern and productive factory in the South American country.
The automaker’s Brazilian subsidiary announced a new investment of 1.2 billion reais (about 222 million dollars at the current exchange rate) in the GM Gravataí plant in Rio Grande do Sul, the birthplace and main manufacturing center of the popular Chevy Onix. The investment will support the production of a new Chevrolet vehicle in Gravataí and continue the modernization of the factory to adopt more efficient technologies in the future.
Dedicated exclusively to the production of the Chevy Onix in its two body styles, the GM Gravataí plant will receive a new update as part of the first phase of GM Brazil’s next investment cycle between 2024 and 2028 announced at the beginning of the year. A new Chevrolet vehicle will be manufactured at the Gravataí complex starting in 2026 and will be based on the upcoming updated Onix, created as an “unprecedented” model for a new market segment.
“Today, we are taking the first step towards the future. We will launch a new, unprecedented model to compete in segments that we do not currently cover, both in the Brazilian domestic market and in the export market,” said President of GM South America, Santiago Chamorro. “More than 4.7 million units have been produced at the Gravataí plant, with iconic Chevrolet models, such as Celta, Onix and new Onix. And, starting in 2026, with this unprecedented model,” he added.
Although GM South America has yet to openly confirm it, the new vehicle the company will be building in Brazil will be an upcoming crossover version of the Chevy Onix – which GM Authority reported on early last year. In particular, the upcoming Onix crossover is expected to use the same GEM platform variant and several structural elements of the Onix, positioning itself below the Chevy Tracker as the brand’s new entry-level utility vehicle.
The announcement of this new investment for the GM Gravataí plant took place on Thursday, July 11th at the plant’s facilities, with the participation of GM’s top regional leadership in Brazil and the governor of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. In addition to the upcoming crossover variant of the Onix, the investment in the complex will also allow production of the refreshed Chevy Onix and Onix Plus sedan to strengthen GM’s level of competitiveness in Brazil.
