Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Traverse sales saw the Bow Tie’s three-row crossover move up a spot to eighth place from the previous quarter among now 14 entries during Q2 2024 when ranked by sales volume. Starting this quarter in the mainstream large three-row crossover segment, we’ve added the GMC Acadia, the Traverse’s corporate sibling, since the all-new model is bigger and now the same size as the all-new Traverse.

The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) remained in the lead again, with sales flat for 46,338 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot, moving up to second place, posting a 17 percent uptick to 36,232 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander, the larger of the two crossovers from Toyota, has moved ahead of its smaller sibling for the first time since the first-ever model entered the marketplace, posting 30,246 deliveries to take third. Meanwhile, the VW Atlas placed fourth with a 30 percent bump to 29,062 units. The Hyundai Palisade took fifth with a 44 percent jump to 28,492 units, while the second entry from the Hyundai Motor Group, the Kia Telluride, placed sixth with flat sales, moving 28,122 units. The Toyota Highlander slipped to seventh from second, with a 52 percent drop to 28,075 units. The Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), in eighth, posted a 35 percent dip in sales for 23,987 deliveries, while the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) saw sales fall 59 percent, moving 10,008 units.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with larger models like the Traverse and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating are sold at a price point similar to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models are sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Traverse sales performance continued a negative trend during the second quarter of 2024. Sales of both the Traverse and GMC Acadia both may be impacted by a generational changeover for the two all-new models. But we suspect those next-generation offerings will gain sales as buyers check out the new designs, overhauled cabins, and improved features, such as the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance system now being offered on the two nameplates for the first time ever.

GM could use a leg up in this competitive space. Even combining Chevy Traverse sales with GMC Acadia sales this quarter saw The General finish behind Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Ford, and Honda, even though the last two automakers each sell only one model here.

About Chevrolet Traverse

This past summer, GM revealed the next-gen 2024 Chevy Traverse, introducing a design that evokes “a rugged, ready-for-anything presence” along with a fully overhauled cabin with a “best-in-class” 17.7-inch diagonal color infotainment touchscreen. Furthermore, the vaunted GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance feature will be available for the first time ever on the Traverse, thanks to the adoption of GM’s new Global B electronic architecture, plus heated windshield wipers.

Four trim levels are currently available for the all-new 2024 Traverse, including LS, LT, and RS, plus a new off-road-focused Z71 trim for the first time on the large three-row crossover, marking it the first unibody vehicle to wear the Z71 badge. The first-ever, off-road capable Traverse Z71 offers better approach and departure angles, with its new capability demonstrated in videos recently released by GM.

Meanwhile, the Traverse RS features unique taillights, which are clear instead of red.

The High Country trim has been dropped, though it is not entirely off the table. The forthcoming high-end Premier has been spotted in the wild. That was expected and is not surprising since the new 2024 Traverse RS is based on the forthcoming Premier trim.

The next-gen 2024 Traverse offers a single powertrain choice. The all-new turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine develops 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, representing an additional 18 horsepower and 60 pound-feet compared to the outgoing 3.6L V6 LFY engine – an impressive 22.5-percent increase in peak torque. Yet, the maximum trailering rating for the new Traverse stays the same at 5,000 pounds. There’s a good reason why the 2024 Traverse doesn’t use the turbo 2.7L engine.

The 2024 Traverse’s front wheels are driven by an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. All-wheel drive is available as a “regular” system on all trim levels, while the Z71 trim level exclusively sports an “off-road-capable” twin-clutch system.

Production of the 2025 Traverse is currently scheduled for October 14th.
